The three-city dialogue, held from 10 to 14 April with the participation of the world’s renowned Swiss architect Mario Botta and film director Loretta Dalpozzo, consists of a rich program of documentary screening, lecture, master class, and panel discussion. Initiated by the Embassy of Switzerland in China and co-organized by its Consulates General in Shanghai and Chengdu, the SSAD, an interactive platform to further exchanges between Switzerland and China, is supported by prestigious local partners of Tsinghua University Art Museum (TAM) in Beijing, Tongji University in Shanghai and Luxelakes·A4 Art Museum in Chengdu. Archipel trekt naar de prachtige streek van Ticino, Bergamo en Milaan … op zoek naar vergeten parels binnen het Italiaans modernisme en naar verrassende hedendaagse realisaties. Naast de bekende namen als Gio Ponti en Ernesto N. Rogers zijn er ook minder bekende als Dominioni, Gardella, Portaluppi, Pizzigoni, Asnago Vender en Moretti. Na de tweede wereldoorlog kregen ze tijdens de heropbouw in Milaan en Bergamo veel kansen om zelfs in het historische hart van de stad te bouwen. Aangespoord door Ernesto N. Rogers’ pleidooi in het tijdschrift Casabella voor een “Continuità” met het verleden van de stad en respect voor de eigenheid ervan, het “preesistenze Ambientali” ontwierpen ze intrigerende woongebouwen. Ruime terrassen en een open, soms grillig plattegrond vertaalden de Milanese burgerwoning naar een collectief woongebouw met veel aandacht voor sfeer, materiaal en de overgangen van publieke ruimte naar de privé sfeer van het appartement. In hun vormgeving verwezen ze openlijk of veeleer subtiel en gelaagd naar het verleden van Milaan. Een eigen interpretatie van het toenmalige strakke modernisme, zonder de rauwe hang naar tabula rasa en een open confrontatie met de historische stad.

Sherman) A museum is a historically situated institution invested with cultural significance. Taking a case-study approach, this thesis demonstrates the usefulness of certain strands of critical museum studies for sifting through discourses to understand what is at stake in a particular museum at a given time. The Bechtler Museum of Modern Art opened in Charlotte, North Carolina in January 2010, a moment when extravagant museum architecture was expected to serve as brand or icon to increase the prestige of a city. Mario Botta’s design for the Bechtler Museum, however, harkens to an earlier, subtler mode. Likewise, the museum’s single-donor collection of predominantly European, mid-twentieth-century art reinforces a modernist mode of interaction between audience, artist, and patron.     Mario Botta Designs Poster for Cersaie 2009 “Architecture is gravity, form and matter that accommodates people and life. Ceramic originates from Mother Earth. With this image I wanted to recall where we come from, what we are made of, where we live. And also where we are going: the future is already here.” With these words Mario Botta describes the poster for Cersaie 2009, the tenth created by a great contemporary master of architecture and design. The concept expressed by Botta is taken from the architect’s first work using ceramic tiles and exhibited at the Triennale during the Milan Furniture Fair: “Il Guscio”, or the “Shell”. The basic idea is that ceramic is a natural material made of earth and fire that until now has had fairly limited use. Through this image, the architect wanted to create a space entirely enveloped by ceramic in a plastic fashion like a “maternal uterus”, through which we can reclaim our origins. Mario Botta is the tenth architect commissioned to design the Cersaie poster and carries on a tradition that began in 2000 with Ettore Sottsass and continued with Alessandro Mendini (2001), Massimo Iosa Ghini (2002), Denis Santachiara (2003), Hani Rashid (2004), David Palterer (2005), Antonio Citterio (2006), Toyo Ito (2007) and Thom Mayne (2008). All of these architects share a common drive to push architecture forward, which dovetails with Cersaie and Ceramic Tiles of Italy’s mission. After an apprenticeship in Lugano, he first attends the Art College in Milan and then studies at the University Institute of Architecture in Venice. Directed by Carlo Scarpa and Giuseppe Mazzariol he receives his professional degree in 1969. During his time in Venice he has the opportunity to meet and work for Le Corbusier and Louis I. Kahn. His professional activity begins in 1970 in Lugano. He builds his first single-family houses in Canton Ticino and subsequently all over the world. He has always committed himself in an intense architectural research and since 1996 he is involved as creator and founder of the new academy of architecture in Mendrisio, Ticino where he is Professor and held the directorship in 2002/2003.
