After long weary months of writing, re-

writing, picture taking and sleepless nights,

we, the members of the Echo Staff, have

finally completed our task in the publication

of the eighth edition of the Echo.

Leaving Washington High and saying good-

bye to our associates is not an easy task. It is

a moment of conflicting emotions, proud of

our accomplishments, and yet, sad to be leav-

ing.

We feel fortunate that our lives have been

influenced by our advisers, and we hope that

the others who come after us will take advant-

age of their leadership.

With one last look and a fond farewell, we

hope that this book will be not only the story

of life at Washington, but also a tangible me-

mento of all our high school years.

And now we must leave here Washington,

And now we have a harder battle to fight.

We have hidden our childish things forever

We are looking for a future that is bright.

Our last four years have been some hectic ones

We have striven for our one and only goal

To be of Character, Courtesy, and Culture

Which is our motto and we'll forever uphold.

We think of you in days of prosperity

In parting, you will not be forgotten

May your buildings embrace all with sincerity

Dear old Washington, our lovely "Alma Mater."

By Gloria Wilhelmina Lester SENIOR CLASS SONG

(Tune "You're Breaking My Heart")

It's breaking our hearts to be leaving,

We love you dear Washington High,

Our hearts will always be with you.

Your memory will ere' be with us.

It's breaking our hearts to be leaving,

The teachers so kind and so true,

It saddens us so to be going,

Thy light will guide our steps,

As years go by

Your banners fly

For those who follow in our steps.

We'll cherish you when we have gone far

You will always be our guiding star.

The foundation for our building of education was erected when we entered through the portals of the Washington High School. There was, in our group of unskilled laborers called Freshmen, a total number of 246. The blue print for the building was given to us by different foreman called Freshmen advisers. They were Mrs. V. K. Newell, Miss M. B. Bugg, Mrs. I. E. Washington, Mr. P. H. Williams, and Mrs. M. G. Frazier. Tools ware issued along with instruction as to how we were to conduct ourselves while completing the building.

In applying ourselves to this type of work we were ignorant and excited. We made our share of mistakes, but as the years progressed we settled down and were able through constant guidance from our advisers to build a good foundation in laying t'le first course of the building of education. That year we took an active part in the school life, participating in many school activities. In the band we had many representatives who were Owen Ivey, Fabius Tucker, Delmar Jones, James Wallace, Boykin Gartrell, Navarro Jeffries, and Hubert Hayes. We were also represented in the Glee Club — Jolethia Doe, Gloria Lester, Emma Cheek, Audrey Jarnagin, Jeannette Fields, June Thomas, George Adams, Thomas Avery, Willie Haywood, Pearl Wilson, Virginia Taylor. Our rep- resentatives of the student council were Pearl Wilson and Leanna Durham. We were also represented on the football team by Ellis Jones. The highest average that year was obtained by Emma Cheek. We were represented on the office staff in the person of Anne Goode, Cardrienne Perrin, Bessie McNeil and Marguerite Butcher. The class officers for that year were: president, Robert Adams;

secretary, Mildred Blount ; assistant secretary, Do rothy Nichols; treasurer, Emma Cheek and re- porter, Marguerite Butcher.

Although we have been common laborers and unskilled the job had been set before us. We have tried to be as active as possible in our first high school year. The building of education then, was beginning to take on a modern appearance. Toward the end of the year, we had laid 88 courses. We now must stop for our summer vacation and look forward to returning to Washington High School as Sophomores.

II

We returned to our job of completing our building of education in the Fall of '47. We rested and were eligible to resume our construction job. We started off the year by electing the class officers.

President, James Wallace vice president, Boykin Gartrell secretary, Mildred Blount ; assistant ; ; secretary, Sydney Roberts; treasurer, Emma Cheek.

We were lucky enough to have for our advisers Miss Bugg, Mrs. Newell, Mrs. Frazier and Mr. Williams.

Our class greatly reduced in number to the total of 169. This did not hinder us in laying our 167 courses in the building of education. We were represented in the band that year by Owen Ivey, James Wallace, Boykin Gartrell. Navarro Jeffries, Fabius Tucker and Algernon Daly. We were represented on the football team that year by Ellis Jones. William Dunston was the man- ager of the W. H. Little Blues that year. The highest average was obtained by Emma Cheek. We were very lucky that year in doing something that had not been done by a sophomore class in many years. In winning Miss W. H. S. Contest, our representative was Juanita Freeman. On the office staff we had as representatives Anne Goode, Cardrienne Perrin, Marguerite Butcher, Bessie McNeil, and Ola Mae Evans. We now must stop for our summer vacation and look forward to returning to W. H. S. as Juniors.

We returned to our job of completing our building of education in tbe Fall of '48. The framework is just about to be completed but there are still 138 laborers to help finish the job. Emma Cheek, Sydney Eoberts, Boykin Gartrell, James Wallace, Pearl Wilson, Marlene Sanders, Yvonne Jeffries, Betty McCray, Marvin Thorpe, Mary Harris, June Thomas, Loreece Burrell, and Algernon Daly worked very hard so they were paid higher by becoming members of the Crown and Scepter Club. All of the laborers are making a great success in their work. Officers elected for this crew were president, James Wallace; vice-president, Boykin Gartrell; secretary, Mildred Blount; assistant secretary, Mary Harris; treasury, Sydney Roberts; assistant treasurer, Yvonne Jeffries. With the election of Thomas Avery as Major of the Patrol Forces, George Adams winner in the musical contest, Mildred Blount and Anne Goode presidents of the New Homemakers of A.merica and Mamie Joyner president of the Library Club, these things brought great honors to our crew. "A Night Under the Stars", was the theme for the Junior-Senior Prom. It was one of the most enjoyable evenings for all of us because we were the first class to have a prom in our new gymnasi- um. Mildred Blount, Marguerite Butcher, Ruth Debnam, Gladys Hunter, Anne Goode, Yvonne Jeffries, Betty McCray and Sydney Roberts were chosen to be Debutantes of 1949. There were a large number of outstanding football players on the team. They were Thomas Jeffers, William Andrews, Ellis Jones, George Adams, Lawrence Ashley and Hubert Hayes. There is only one more story to finish and all the laborers are very happy to complete this building.

IV

Finally we found ourselves as Seniors. Yes, dignified, sophisticated and wise seniors. Gone were the frightened sensations of our lower classmen days. After feeling heady and superior for a short time we began to feel sad at the thought of leaving dear old Washington High. Our emotions vacillated from the depth of sadness to the heights of joy as we faced our senior year and its responsibility. We chose as our president for this very important year, Fabius Tucker. His aides were Willie Haywood as vice president; Oscar Kendall, secretary; William Dunston, assistant secretary, and June Thomas as treasurer. We now accepted added responsibility in the school program. Serving as office assistants to the principal were Marguerite Butcher, Anne Goode, Gladys Hunter, Bessie McNeil, Cardrienne Per- rin, Betty Lou McCray, Delores Williams and Inez Vandergriff. The assistants in the library were Jolethia Doe, Mamie Joyner, Ernestine High, Gladys Hunter, Almeta Hasty. In the extra curricula activities the seniors took a most active part. President of Crown and . Scepter Club, June Thomas president of Girls League, Anne Goode president of Y-Teens, Sydney ; ; Roberts and president of Hi-Y, James Wallace. In the field of sports we point with pride to Captain Ellis Jones, Norman Bates, Lawrence Ashley, Charles Glenn, and business manager, William Dun- ston as football stars. In basketball we contributed Ellis Jones, Owen Ivey, Earl Richardson, Del- mar Jones, and Willie Haywood, Lawrence Ashley. Cheerleaders, Jolethia Doe, Jeannette Fields, Betty Lou McCray, Ophelia Matthews, Mamie Joyner, Pearl Wilson, Delores Williams, Cardri- enne Perrin, Anne Goode, Iris Wilson, Hettie Griffis. Many days in our senior year are highlighted by happy memories but perhaps the day that will long remain freshest in our memory is the day we received our class rings. We now wear the badge of our seniority. No activity afforded us more pleasure than the Glee Club. We contributed to the school pro- grams; made a visit to Fort Bragg; sang for the Lions Club at a luncheon meeting; exchanged programs with the Needham Broughton and Hugh Morson schools. Engaging in these enjoyable programs were: Geraldine Burton, Emma Cheek, Jolethia Doe, Gloria Lester, Hettie Griffis, Ann

Goode, Cardrienne Perrin, Evelyn Moultree, Pearl Willson, Jeannette Fields, Iris Wilson, June Thomas, George Adams, Joseph Whitaker, John Goode, Earl Raines, Charles Glenn, Warren Bald- win, John Smith and Audrey Jarnagin.

Among the many delightful affairs that gladdened the hearts of a score or more of the young ladies in the senior class was the Debutante Ball. On this occasion the following were presented to society: Patricia Allen, Loreece Burrell, Emma Cheek, Rebecca Delane, Jolethia Doe, Jean- nette Fields, Audrey Jarnagin, Mamie Joyner, Gloria Lester, Ophelia Matthews, Mildred McNeil, Cardrienne Perrin, Delores Williams, Evelyn Moultrie and Pearl Wilson.

And so the chapters have unfolded revealing the history of the class of 1950 and now the final pages are being written. Washington High School has left its imprint on the lives of each of us.

The future will tell how well these pages have been written. The past is done. From the callow freshmen of 1946 we have grown to the finished product—the seniors of 1950. So one hundred and twenty one loyal sons and daughters of Washington High bid you, our alma mater, adieu. May your good influence continue to benefit all mankind.

We wish to thank our advisers Miss M. B. Bugg, Mrs. V. K. Newell and Mr. P. H. Williams for their guidance in helping us through.

Prophetess Yvonne Jeffries, Gloria Fields and prophet Joseph Whitaker are making a tour of the United States in the new 1960 Atomic Power Locomotive. The object of this tour is to gather the graduates of 1950 to see if the things they prophesied materialized.

As they dined in a down town restaurant of proprietor Nathan Becoat, they were entertained with soft dinner music by Earl Raines. They were made welcome by hostesses, Marguerite Butcher, Juanita Freeman and Ida Silver. There was a little time left, so they suggested that they hire a car from "The John C. Smith Co.," to see the famous bridge the engineers, Boykin Gartrell, Leon Holloway, Robert Waldon, William Daniel, and contractors Claude Watkins, James Wallace, Harold Taylor, Delma Jones and Richmond Wall had erected. As they were on their way to the site of the bridge they saw on a billboard that "D eb Debnam" and his orchestra which consisted of Fabius Tucker, Douglas Harrison, Hubert Hayes, and Maurice Haywood, featuring vocalist Jeanette Fields, and the owner himself, Ronald Debnam, were coming to town.

Relaxed and comfortable, the trio smoothly moved to the next state which was Pennsylvania, they were met by famous Psychiatrist, Mildred Blount who directed them to one of the largest hotels owned by Floyd Matthews. This was designed by John White; bricks were laid by some very capable Brick Masons William Womble, William Young, Clarence Saulter, and Owen Ivey. Being very tired, the travelers retired to their respective quarters. The radio was tuned in to the early morning news commentator, I nomas Avery who gave clear concise up to date news. After breakfast the travelers were rushed to the air port in the 1960 Mercury designed by Algernon Daly where they boarded a plane piloted by Charles Cameron. The trio were made comfortable by host- esses Lula Pope, Josephine Lucas, Alberta Smith and Delois High.

Arriving in Ohio, they were met by Inez Vandergriff, a very successful business woman. Prophe- tess, Gloria Fields decided to visit the famous designing establishment owned by Jolethia Doe, and Josephine Manuel. Prophetess Yvonne Jeffriss decided to visit a swanky beauty parlor owned by Virginia Taylor, with her very capable operators Ora Lassiter, Mary Rogers, Marie Rogers, Helen Gales, Ruth Mauley, Barbara Evans, Grace Mitchell, Verba Morris, and Leanne Durham. Prophet Joseph Whitaker decided to visit one of the Ritz Tayloring Shops owned by Ellis Jones. Everyone would meet later at the Art Gallery to see the works of Eula Riddick, Bessie McNeill, and Warren Baldwin. Virgil Ray, a successful business man gave them a very fine send-off to Indiana. As they rode along comfortably, Prophet Joseph Whitaker tuned in the radio. Radio Technicians William Lester and Wilbert Williams have made great improvements on the radio.

Prophetess Yvonne Jeffries read the paper and saw that Lawyers, Mary Harris and Ernestine. High are pleading their first case. She also saw a column that Journalist Pearl Wilson, will make her visit to Jacksonville, Florida. She saw that a Missionary, Willie Meadows is going to make a trip to Africa to educate the natives. Gloria Fields met some teachers going to a Texas con- ference, Teachers: Biology, Marlene Saunders; Social Science, Ophelia Matthews, and Earl Rich- ardson; Home Economics, Martha Atkins, Cardrienne Perrin Commmercial, Gladys Hunter, ; Ola Evans Elementary, Betty Woods, Gloria Lester, Sydney Roberts Mathematics, Lela Walker. ; ;

As the train came into Ohio they were met by a famous Doctor Oscar Kendall who carried them to meet the local hospital staff who were Doctor Loomis Peebles, Nurses Iris Wilson, Mildred Mc-

Neil , Mamie Joyner and Emma Cheek doing research work. They boarded the train to Colorado where they were met by a famous president of an insurance company, Marvin Thorpe who carried them through his establishment. They entered a large room where there were many

desks with stenographers namely: Mary Johnson, Evelyn Moultrie, Betty McCray, Yvonne Cooke, Patricia Allen, Vivian Wesley, Rebecca Delaine, Audrey Jarnagin, and Marguerite Mc- Dougal. The prophets decided to take in a movie which had a musical review starring vocalist

Charles Glenn and George Adams ; on the sport reel they were very impressed to see William And- rews, William Dunston, Lawrence Ashley and Norman Bates officiating in a college football game. After the movie they dined at a restaurant owned by Ulysses Jones, and Jessie Watkins. Before catching a plane to Hollywood, California, they visited a moving picture studio where they met famous stars namely: Anne Goode, Gloria Thorpe, Ruth Bebnam, Hettie Griffis, Geraldine Burton, Agnes Parker and Delores Williams. After leaving the studio they dined with publicists, Lewis Ray, John Goode and Stage Manager Harold Jeffries. The trio decided to go to the theater to see June Thomas perform as a Concert Pianist.

The Prophetess and the Prophet of the graduating class of 1950 were very much impressed to see that the prophecy had materialized so well.

IDEAL GIRL

"Beautiful in form and feature, Lovely as the day, Can there be so fair a creature, Formed of common clay."

Our ideal girl of the senior class of 1950 must possess the lustrous hair and ever glowing eyes of Ophelia Matthews. Her skin must have the smooth velvet texture of Betty McCray. She shall have the deep round dimples of Sidney Roberts, plus the pleasing smile of Eula Riddick. She shall have the height of Anne Goode, with the Venus like physique of Ida Silver. Her taste for clothes shall be that of Marguerite Butcher, which shall make her as popular as Cardrienne Perrin and Rebecca Delane. She must possess the quiet dignity of Mildred Blount and the magnetic character of Gloria Thorpe. Her culture must be equivalent to that of Verba Morris.

The ideal girl must also possess the musical ability of June Thomas and Pearl Wilson. Add to this the scholastic ability of Emma Cheek and Mary Harris.

We believe that if such a creature exists she is not only beautiful but also inimitable.

James Arthur Wallace Fabius Herbert Tucker Boykin William Gartreli, * *

IDEAL BOY

In the selection of the ideal boy of the senior class of 1950, we have made a thorough study of

the outstanding qualities of the boys in our class and have come to the following conclusion : The ideal boy should have the physique of John White and height of Robert Hall, the dark brown wavy hair of Marvin Thorpe and the smooth brown complexion of Ulysses Jones, with the dreamy eyes of Harold Taylor. His personality must match that of Owen Ivey and popularity of Charles Glenn. His voice should be as sweet as that of George Adams, and as handsome as Virgil Ray. His taste in clothes must equal that of Forrest Wilson. Blended with the superb culture of Boykin Gartreli and the scholastic ability of Algernon Daly, governed by the leadership of Fab Tucker and the loyalty and sincereness of James Wallace. His friendliness must equal that of William Dunston, and his social life must be as well rounded as that of Nathan Becoat. He must compete on the basketball court with Ellis Jones and just posses the wit of Floyd Matthews. His financial capacity must be that of Charles Cameron. Cardrienne Perrin Anne C. Goode

iiiiiiiiimiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiim ECHO'S OF THE Y-TEEN CONFERENCE

On the morning of August 22, six White and one Negro Y-Teen set out for

Camp Ilahee located about 32 miles from Asheville, N. C. (The camp is usually a camp for White girls.) I was sent as an exchange delegate. By exchange delegate

I mean 10 White girls were sent to the Negro conference and I was one of the 10

Negro girls sent to the White conference. The girls came from North Carolina,

South Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia and the District of Columbia.

A conference day included morning and evening worship, discussions on Religion and Psychology, Recreation and Club Clinics. We also had a choice in workshops which included Music, Recreation, Vocational Guidance, Creative Writing, Wor- ship, Dramatics and Arts and Crafts.

At night the real fun began. During the course of the week we had a Tackie

Party, Adviser talent show, Y-Teen talent show, and a Square Dance.

I was most impressed with the feeling of oneness. Everyone was concerned about the happiness of the other.

My happiest moment came with the decision of the conference to have one big conference starting in 1950. During the past years two conferences have been held.

One at Ilahee for White girls and the other at E. W. Y^oung for the Negro girls.

After exchanging delegates from each conference the girls decided to have one conference next summer.

And so—Next summer the girls from this school will go to the int?racial Y-Teen conference at Ilahee. A rich experience for any girl.

W. H. S. 2 Gastonia 0 GOAL CROSSED BUT BLUES SCORE WIN RALEIGH, OCTOBER, 1949 Coach Pete Williams and his Washington High youngsters returned home Saturday with Victory No. 3 without defeat but their unscored-on record was left behind in Wilmington. The Little Blues chalked up their third straight 'n the Port City Friday night, turning back Williston High, 13-6 but the six-pointer which the home club pushed across shortly after the second half began ended a string of scoreless games for the Capital City preps. Kinston, beaten 16-0, and Lexington trounce I 36-0, and were held outside the Blues' goal but Williston penetrated the double stripes on a five yard plunge by the loser's Thomas. But that was all the unbeaten Blues would allow their hosts. Walter Terrell, Blues' guard pounced on a fu nble by Brown in the Williston end zone in the second quarter to provide a 6-0 lead.
