38 trenches revealed evidence for occupation of the site from the 10th century. Features detected by geophysical survey were in most cases interpreted as palaeochannels. However, ditches aligned in an east-west orientation corresponded with those discovered by geophysics and likely for part of an outlying field system. The visible earthwork investigated in trench 9 could be associated with the early medieval settlement, possibly providing a flood defence barrier. [Au(adp)]
