Against all Odds MIT’s Pioneering Women of Landscape Architecture * Eran Ben-Joseph, Holly D. Ben-Joseph, Anne C. Dodge1 Massachusetts Institute of Technology, School of Architecture and Planning, City Design and Development Group 77 Massachusetts Ave. 10-485 Cambridge, MA 02139 1 November 2006 * Recipient of the 6th Milka Bliznakov Prize Commendation: International Archive of Women in Architecture (IAWA) This research is aimed at exposing the influential, yet little known and short-lived landscape architecture program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) between 1900 and 1909. Not only was it one of only two professional landscape architecture education programs in the United States at the time (the other one at Harvard also started at 1900), but the first and only one to admit both women and men. Women students were attracted to the MIT option because it provided excellent opportunities, which they were denied elsewhere. Harvard, for example did not admit women until 1942 and all-women institutions such as the Cambridge School or the Cornell program were established after the MIT program was terminated. Unlike the other schools of that time, the MIT program did not keep women from the well-known academic leaders and male designers of the time nor from their male counterparts. At MIT, women had the opportunity to study directly with Beaux-Art design pioneers such as Charles S. Sargent, Guy Lowell, Désiré Despradelle, and the revered department head Francis Ward Chandler. Historical accounts acknowledged that a woman could “put herself through a stiff course” at MIT including advance science and structural engineering instruction. -
Irene Castle and Her Female Networks of Theatrical Business
50 Nic Leonhardt Ludwig Maximilian University, Germany A Hop, A Frock, A Hairdo: Irene Castle and her Female Networks of Theatrical Business Focusing on American dancer/performer Irene Castle (1893-1969) and following the merchandising strategies and aesthetic and societal impact of her widely discussed short haircut, her costumes, and her dancing school, this article aims at describing and disentangling the tight network of theatrical and popular entertainment, economy, and urbanity in the 1910s. Through an interdisciplinary approach and with a focus on a limited time frame of five years (1910-1915), the author discusses various strands, agents, contact zones and business strategies that are part and parcel of this network. Next to Irene Castle, two female theatre professionals are of particular interest here: costume designer Lady Duff-Gordon (1863-1935) and theatrical agent Elizabeth Marbury (1856-1933). Nic Leonhardt is a theatre and media historian with a special interest in historiography, visual culture, popular culture, and urban history. She is currently associate director and researcher of the DFG research project “Global Theatre Histories” at LMU Munich, Germany, and a lecturer in theatre studies. Joseph S. Tenn Department of Physics & Astronomy, Sonoma State University, Rohnert Park, CA, 94928, USA Abstract. When V. M. Slipher gave the 1933 George Darwin lecture to the Royal Astronomical Society, it was natural that he spoke on spectrographic studies of planets. Less than one–sixth of his published work deals with globular clusters and the objects we now call galaxies. In his most productive years, when he had Percival Lowell to give him direction, Slipher made major discoveries regarding stars, galactic nebulae, and solar system objects. These included the first spectroscopic measurement of the rotation period of Uranus, evidence that Venus’s rotation is very slow, the existence of reflection nebulae and hence interstellar dust, and the stationary lines that prove the existence of interstellar calcium and sodium. After Lowell’s death in 1916 Slipher con- tinued making spectroscopic observations of planets, comets, and the aurora and night sky. He directed the Lowell Observatoryfrom 1916 to 1954, where his greatest achieve- ments were keeping the observatory running despite very limited staff and budget, and initiating and supervising the “successful” search for Lowell’s Planet X. It was through their determination, strength of character and often flamboyant personalities, these publications suggest, that they transformed what had hitherto been seen as an unpaid amateur feminine activity – the decoration of the home – into a modern career for women. Indeed, the fact that so many of the lady decorators focused on the home is made much of in several of the studies. In the foreword to the book about their mother and grandmother by Sister Parish, Apple Bartlett and Susan Crater, for example, Albert Hadley stressed that, “The beauty and harmony of her surroundings were expressed with conviction and clarity in the environments she helped to create for others. At the core were all the elements of refined taste, but taste flavored by a sometimes wicked wit and a degree of jovial irreverence that possibly explains the magic of her creative genius – her genius for the art of living, the art of home.” ii Only May’s article on McClelland points out that that particular decorator contributed to the profession of interior decoration in a more institutional manner by becoming the first women to be the national president of the American Institute of Interior Decorators. -
