Department of Planning and Zoning Subject: Howard County Landscape Manual Updates: Recommended Street Tree List (Appendix B) and Recommended Plant List (Appendix C) - Effective July 1, 2010 To: DLD Review Staff Homebuilders Committee From: Kent Sheubrooks, Acting Chief Division of Land Development Date: July 1, 2010 Purpose: The purpose of this policy memorandum is to update the Recommended Plant Lists presently contained in the Landscape Manual. The plant lists were created for the first edition of the Manual in 1993 before information was available about invasive qualities of certain recommended plants contained in those lists (Norway Maple, Bradford Pear, etc.). Additionally, diseases and pests have made some other plants undesirable (Ash, Austrian Pine, etc.). The Howard County General Plan 2000 and subsequent environmental and community planning publications such as the Route 1 and Route 40 Manuals and the Green Neighborhood Design Guidelines have promoted the desirability of using native plants in landscape plantings. Therefore, this policy seeks to update the Recommended Plant Lists by identifying invasive plant species and disease or pest ridden plants for their removal and prohibition from further planting in Howard County and to add other available native plants which have desirable characteristics for street tree or general landscape use for inclusion on the Recommended Plant Lists. Durrill, Ph.D. i ABSTRACT Certain events in recent history have called into question some long-held assumptions about the colors of our material history. The controversy over the cleaning of the Sistine Chapel posited questions about color to an international audience, and in the United States the restoration of original decorative colors at the homes of many historically significant figures and religious groups has elicited a visceral reaction suggesting the new colors challenge Americans’ entrenched notions of what constituted respectable taste, if not comportment, in their forebears. Recent studies have even demonstrated that something as seemingly objective as photography has greatly misled us about the appearance of our past. We tend to see the nineteenth century as a faded, sepia-toned monochrome. But nothing could be further from the truth. Coloring Their World: Americans and Decorative Color in the Nineteenth Century, argues that in that century we can witness one of the only true democratizations in American history—the diffusion of color throughout every level of society. In the eighteenth century American aristocrats brandished color like a weapon, carefully crafting the material world around them as a critical part of their political and social identities, cognizant of the power afforded them by color’s correct use, and the consequences of failure. -

Their beautiful bloom, small stature, and attractive fruit give them year-round interest…unless they are devastated by disease! Crabapples are susceptible to four major diseases which can cause early defoliation, disfigurement and weakening of trees. Apple scab is the most common and most serious of the diseases. It shows up on leaves as olive green spots with a velvety, grayish surface. In July leaves often turn yellow or orange and drop from the tree. Another serious disease, fire blight, causes the leaves to blacken, shrivel and hang down. Cedar apple rust shows up as conspicuous bright yellow to orange spots on the upper leaf surfaces. And powdery mildew appears in mid-summer as patches of grayish white powder on leaves and fruit. You probably don’t want plants that have to be sprayed in order to be attractive! Many of the older varieties may look great in flower but then succumb to scab or other disease in mid-summer, looking tattered and torn for the remainder of the season. Some cultivars and hybrids that are readily available and have shown good resistance in many trials nationwide are listed below. All have single flowers and small fruit (less than 5/8" diameter). The temperatures at the end of each description are cold hardiness ratings from the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum. -

During the period of con- struction, temporary quarters were secured at 414 Harvard Street. The new building stands upon the site of the old building which the Club had occupied since the year 1833. In order to celebrate in an appropriate manner the comple- tion of the work and the Centennial Anniversary of the Founding of the Porcellian Club, a committee, consisting of the Building Committee and the officers of the Club, was chosen. February 21, 1891, was selected as the date, and it was decided to have the Annual Meeting and certain Literary Exercises commemorative of the occasion precede the Dinner. The Committee has prepared this volume con- taining the Literary Exercises, a brief account of the Din- ner, and a catalogue of the members of the Club to date. For more information, please contact [email protected]. “LINES WRITTEN IN MY CLOSET”: VOLUME ONE OF JUDITH SARGENT MURRAY’S POETRY MANUSCRIPTS by TAMMY MILLS Under the Direction of Reiner Smolinski ABSTRACT Once holding an esteemed literary reputation as author of The Gleaner (1798), an eclectic collection of prose and poetry serialized and sold by advance subscription, Judith Sargent Murray (1751-1820) was virtually forgotten for nearly two centuries. The 1986 discovery of manuscripts believed to have been lost prompted critics to evaluate anew Sargent Murray’s literary accomplishments. Previously unpublished poems and letters mark the prolific author as an important figure in early America’s self-conscious attempt to establish a national literature. This dissertation makes available Volume One of Sargent Murray’s poetry manuscript journals: two hundred and twenty previously unpublished poems and two that were published in The Massachusetts Magazine. -

As our valley is underlaid with limestone, our cobbles are limestone and hence the haunts of lime-loving ferns and rock plants. The largest cobble in Sheffield, long a picnic site for the region, is Bartholo- mew's Cobble now owned by The Trustees of Public Reservations secured by public subscription and with the aid of the Founders Fund of the Garden Club of America. Its east face plunges directly down to the Housatonic River. On the west it tapers into fields which lead to the massive wall of the Taconic range. -

Historical Narrative: “Historically, there were two, possibly three, Natchez Traces, each one having a different origin and purpose...” – Dawson Phelps, author of the Natchez Trace: Indian Trail to Parkway. Trail: A trail is a marked or beaten path, as through woods or wildness; an overland route. The Natchez Trace has had many names throughout its history: Chickasaw Trace, Choctaw-Chickasaw Trail, Path to the Choctaw Nation, Natchez Road, Nashville Road, and the most well known, the Natchez Trace. No matter what its name, it was developed out of the deep forests of Mississippi, Alabama, and Tennessee, from animal paths and well-worn American Indian footpaths. With American ownership of the Mississippi Territory, an overland route linking the area to the growing country was desperately needed for communication, trade, prosperity and defense from the Spanish and English, who were neighbors on the southwestern frontier. While river travel was desirable, a direct land route to civilization was needed from Natchez in order to bring in military troops to guard the frontier, to take things downriver that were too precious to place on a boat, to return soldiers or boatmen back to the interior of the U.S., and for mail delivery and communication. The improvement of the Natchez Trace began over the issue of mail delivery. In 1798, Governor Winthrop Sargent of the Mississippi Territory asked that “blockhouses” be created along American Indian trails to serve was stops for mail carriers and travelers since it took so long to deliver the mail or travel to Natchez.
