Director Nae Caranfil Will Receive the Excellence Award Director Nae Caranfil will receive the Excellence Award Nae Caranfil, one of the most beloved Romanian directors and a dear guest of the Transilvania International Film Festival, will be awarded the Excellence Award at the 20th edition. The director has been part of the Transilvania IFF history since its first edition, and his latest film, 6.9 on the Richter scale, opened the festival in 2016. In his honor, his first feature film E pericoloso sporgersi will be screened in a newly restored 4K copy. Widely known by the Romanian audiences for his comedies, Nae Caranfil (b. 1960) explored different genres, from drama and romance to musical comedy. He made his debut with E pericoloso sporgersi/ Sundays on Leave (1993), a lively comedy about the mundane and moody lives of three characters whose paths cross: a high school girl, an actor and a soldier. It was followed by Asphalt Tango (1996) starring Charlotte Rampling and Dolce far niente (1998), with Giancarlo Giannini, François Cluzet and Marguerita Buy. His movie Filantropica (2002) was a huge box office hit in Romania, and The Rest is Silence (2008) won numerous awards and was Romania’s submission to the Oscars. His next film, inspired by real heist that took place during the communist regime, Closer to the Moon (2013) gathered an impressive cast lead by Vera Farmiga, Mark Strong and Harry Lloyd. For his latest film, the musical comedy 6,9 on the Richter scale, Nae Caranfil also composed the music. Transilvania IFF will celebrate 20 years of existence between July 23 and August 1, 2021, in Cluj-Napoca. 10 summer days with premieres, guests and events that will put the light on the most remarkable moments from the two decades of the festival. The screenings will take place outdoors, in last year's locations, but also indoors, if the pandemic context will allow it, respecting all safety measures. The Excellence Award is presented by Mercedes-Benz. TIFF - Transilvania International Film Festival Adresa: Str. • Doru POP the “Trans National Turn”. New Urban Identities
The “Trans national Turn”. 9 New Urban Identities and theI. TransformationCreating of thethe Romanian Space Contemporary Cinema Doru POP The “Trans national Turn”. New Urban Identities and the Transformation of the Romanian Contemporary Cinema Abstract The pressure of globalization and the transformations of the international film markets are rapidly changing the recent Romanian cinema. In a period spanning from 2010 to 2014, the paper describes same of the most important transformations, visible early on in productions like Marţi după Crăciun (Tuesday after Christmas) and even more importantly in a film like Poziţia copilului (Child’s Pose). The process, called by the author “the transnational turn” of the Romanian film, is characterized by the fact that urban spaces become more and more neutral and generic and the stories are increasingly de-contextualized. Designed for international markets, these films are changing both the set- ting and the mise-en-scène, creating a non specific space which is more likely to be accepted by cinema goers around the world. The second argument is the present generation Romanian cinema makers are moving even further, they are choosing to abandon the national cinema. As Elisabeth Ezra and Terry Rowden noted in their introduction to the classical reader on “transnational cinema”, another major aspect is that the recent films are increasingly indicating a certain “Hollywoodization” of their storytelling, and, implicitly, of the respective urban contexts of their narratives. This impact goes beyond genrefication, and, as is the case with productions like Love building (2013), which are using both cosmopolitan behaviors and non-specific urban activities, are manifestations of deep transformations in the Romanian cinema.

Nor is it the result of a subjective selection performed by the authors. Nor,again,is it the book of a generation of filmmakers, since the directors here presented claim no explicit common ground and there is little to recommend them as a group with a shared artistic discourse. What, then, is the present volume? It is a project intended to bring together, for the first time, all the directors who made their feature film debut after 1989 and whose achievements were acknowledged through national or international awards.
