Acta Biologica Sibirica 6: 229–247. https://doi.org/10.3897/abs.6.e54139 Abstract An annotated list of Orthopteroidea of rise paddy fields in Kyzylorda oblast in South Kazakhstan is given. A total of 60 species of orthopteroid insects were identified, belonging to 58 genera from 17 families and 5 orders. Mantids are represented by 3 families, 6 genera and 6 species; cockroaches – by 2 families, 2 genera and 2 species; earwigs – by 3 families, 3 genera and 3 species; sticks insects – by 1 family, 1 genus and 1 species. Orthopterans are most numerous (8 families, 46 genera and 48 species). Of these, three species, Bolivaria brachyptera, Hierodula tenuidentata and Ceraeocercus fuscipennis, are listed in the Red Book of the Republic of Kazakhstan. Celes variabilis and Chrysochraon dispar indicated for the first time for a given location. The fauna of orthopteroid insects in the studied areas of Kyzylorda is compared with other regions of Kazakhstan. -

This current newsletter is inænded to update all readers of the most significant developments since then. Of course, those of you who take British Wildlife magazine may already be awarg tlrough my 'rWildlife Notes', of some of the information contained herein. The success ofthe scheme relies upon your endeavours and, once again, I am indebted to the many of you who have submitted records and also to Paul Pearce-Kelly, Rachel Jones and Bryan Pinchen for their contributions on rare species. SUMMARY OF HIGHLIGHTS In comparison with recent years, the summer of 1998 was disappointing, although parts of southern England did have some reÍlsonably warm and dry weather during August and early September which is probably the most important period for the breeding success of many species. It was, perhaps, not surprising that there were fewer records submitted during 1998 as compared with the previous yàr but, even so, there were still several thousand which involved a total of 349 new l0hn squares (including 68 post-1970 refinds). Of these, 195 (including 23 post-1970s) were for 1998, including first ever records for Roesel's Bush Cricket, Metrioptera roeselii, in the Channel Islands, Long-winged Conehead, Conocephalus discolor, in Cambridgeshire and Lesnets Earwig, Forfcula lesnei,in Worcestershire and also a national first for this latter species in lreland. Additionally, we had the most northerly yet records for Lesser Marsh Grasshopper, Chorthippus albomarginqtus. -

Invertebrates of Slapton Ley National Nature Reserve (Fsc) and Prawle Point (National Trust)

CLARK AND JANET BECCALONI Department of Life Sciences, Natural History Museum, Cromwell Road, London SW7 5BD. In 2014 the Natural History Museum, London organised a field trip to Slapton. These field notes report on the trip, giving details of methodology, the species collected and those of notable status. INTRODUCTION OBjectives A field trip to Slapton was organised, funded and undertaken by the Natural History Museum, London (NHM) in July 2014. The main objective was to acquire tissues of UK invertebrates for the Molecular Collections Facility (MCF) at the NHM. The other objectives were to: 1. Acquire specimens of hitherto under-represented species in the NHM collection; 2. Provide UK invertebrate records for the Field Studies Council (FSC), local wildlife trusts, Natural England, the National Trust and the National Biodiversity Network (NBN) Gateway; 3. Develop a partnership between these organisations and the NHM; 4. Publish records of new/under-recorded species for the area in Field Studies (the publication of the FSC). Background to the NHM collections The NHM is home to over 80 million specimens and objects. The Museum uses best practice in curating and preserving specimens for perpetuity. In 2012 the Molecular Collections Facilities (MCF) was opened at the NHM. The MCF houses a variety of material including botanical, entomological and zoological tissues in state-of-the-art freezers ranging in temperature from -20ºC and -80ºC to -150ºC (Figs. 1). As well as tissues, a genomic DNA collection is also being developed. -

Titanoptera, an ‘orthopteroid’ Permian-Triassic order, is one of the few candidates for Paleozoic intersex calling interactions: some specimens had highly specialized broadened zones on the forewings, which are currently considered—despite inconclusive evidence—as ‘resonators’ of a stridulatory apparatus. Here we argue that the stridulatory 1234567890():,; apparatus hypothesis is unlikely because the Titanoptera lack a stridulatory file on their bodies, legs or wings. Instead, comparing these broadened zones with similar structures in extant locusts, flies, and fossil damselflies, we find evidence that the Titanoptera used their wings to produce flashes of light and/or crepitated sounds. Moreover, we describe the first Carboniferous (~310 Mya) Titanoptera, which exhibits such specialized zones, thus corre- sponding to the oldest record of wing communication in insects. The bush-cricket Saga pedo, one of the largest predatory insects, has a scattered distribution across 20 countries in Europe. At the northern boundary of its distribution, this species is most commonly found in Slovakia and Hungary. In Slovakia in 2003–2006, 36 known and potentially favourable localities were visited and at seven this species was recorded for the first time. This species has been found in Slovakia in xerothermic forest steppes and limestone grikes (98% of localities) and on slopes (10–45°) with south-westerly or westerly aspects (90%) at altitudes of 220–585 m a.s.l. (mean 433 m, n = 20 localities). Most individuals (66%) were found in grass-herb layers 10–30 cm high and almost 87% within 10 m of a forest edge (oak, beech and hornbeam being prevalent). The maximum density was 12 nymphs (3rd–5th instar) / 1000 m2 (July 4, 510 m a.s.l.). In a comparison of five present and previous S. pedo localities, 43 species of Orthoptera were found in the present and 37 in previous localities. The first annotated checklist of the long-horned Orthoptera (Ensi- fera) of Tuva and adjacent territories is presented. This list is based on numerous published and unpublished data. A total of 22 species belonging to 2 families, na- mely Tettigoniidae and Gryllidae, are known as occurring in Tuva. Six species are recorded from the region for the first time, namely Tettigonia cantans (Fuessly), Platycleis albopunctata (Goeze), Platycleis affinis Fieber (also new for the Asian part of Russia), Roeseliana fedtschenkoi (Saussure), Poecilimon intermedius (Fie- ber), Acheta domesticus (Linnaeus) (synanthrope). Montana tomini (Pylnov) is also mentioned for the southern part of Krasnoyarsk Region for the first time. Sea Wall Biodiversity Handbook Sea Wall Tim Gardiner, Biodiversity Officer at the Environment Agency, Rob Pilcher, Ecology Team Leader for North West England at AECOM and Max Wade, Technical Director (Ecology) at AECOM, have a long standing interest in the ecology and management of sea wall habitats. Their handbook on sea wall biodiversity brings together a wealth of knowledge about this Cinderella habitat based on the authors’ experience of practical management and the flora and fauna of sea walls. The handbook highlights the breadth of plant and animal species living and relying on sea walls and provides practical guidance for managers of sea defences to ensure that their biodiversity value is by conserved and enhanced. Saving Waves: BioAcoustica Progress Report 1 Ed Baker March 2016 Abstract This report details work on the BioAcoustica project up to the end of March 2016. ARTICULATA 2010 25 (1): 5972 FAUNISTIK The Orthoptera communities of sub-Mediterranean dry grasslands (Aphyllanthion alliance) in the western Spanish Pyrenees Benjamin Krämer, Dominik Poniatowski, Luis Villar & Thomas Fartmann Abstract Sub-Mediterranean dry grasslands (Aphyllanthion alliance) are habitats with high biodiversity that have recently become threatened by abandonment of traditional management activities. Orthoptera communities are highly influenced by the spa- tial structure and thus indicate the quality of a habitat. The communities can be classified by the occurrence of characteristic Orthoptera species (regional "char- acter species" and/or "differential species" according to PONIATOWSKI & FART- MANN 2008). We studied the composition of these communities in 21 plots along an elevation gradient from 750 to 1150 m a.s.l. in the Aísa Valley, western Ara- gonese Pyrenees (Spain). We defined three Orthoptera communities: (i) a com- munity of herb- and grass-rich grasslands (type 1) with the character species Tessellana tessellata, (ii) a community of shrub-rich grasslands (type 2) with the character species Thyreonotus corsicus and Chorthippus binotatus binotatus and the differential species Stenobothrus lineatus and (iii) a community of rocky grasslands (type 3) with the character species Chorthippus b. binotatus and the differential species Oedipoda coerulea. Moreover, we analysed the ecological traits of the character and differential species: Tessellana tessellata prefers ho- mogenous, high and dense vegetation, while the occurrence of Thyreonotus cor- sicus and Stenobothrus lineatus depends on heterogeneous, vertically well- structured habitats with herbs and bushes. In contrast, optimal habitats of Oedi- poda coerulea are characterized by a high proportion of bare ground, and the occurrence of Chorthippus b.
