KARNY- Im Begriffe, nach Niederlandisch-Ostindien auszureisen, benutzte ich einen mebrwocbentlichen Aufenthalt in Holland zum Studium der De Haan'schen Orthopterentypen, die im Leidener Museum aufbewahrt sind. Es schien mir dies umso wichtiger, als so manche der yon De Haan aufgestellten Arten den neueren Monograpben nicbt vorlagen und ihre Deutung daher in der modernen Literatur vielfach zweifelhaft und strittig geblieben ist. Besonderen Dank scbulde ich hier den Herren Director Dr. van Oort und Konservator van Eecke, die mir in der liebenswur- digsten und entgegenkommendsten Weise das wertvolle Material zur Un- tersuchung uberliessen. Behindert wurde meine Arbeit einigermaassen durch den Umstand, dass ich meine eigene orthopterologische Bibliotbuk hier nicht zur Ver- fugung hatte, die Bibliothek des Leidener Museums aber nur wenige orthopterologische Arbeiten besitzt. In dieser Situation half mir aber Herr Professor Dr. W. Roepke von der Landbouw-Hoogeschool in Wa- geningen aus, indem er mir die in seinem Besitz befindlichen Mono- graphien von Brunner und Redtenbacher fur die Dauer meiner Unter- suchungen zur Verfugung stellte. Asclepiadaceae, like Apocynaceae and Scrophulariaceae, contain cardiac glycosides. Raw and purified extracts of these plants phagostimulate larval and adult P. leprosus. We also screened natural and half-synthetic compounds found in those plant extracts. While saponins and sapogenins did not stimulate the animals, many cardiac glycosides and aglycones, offered on filter paper, proved to be phagostimulants. The sounds and behaviors were observed and registered in captivity. The signals were digitized with the Sound-Blaster AWE64 Gold program and analysed with the Avisoft SAS Lab Pro 30 PC for MS Windows software. Seven different types of sounds are described as produced by males: spontaneous song (also used during the courtship), two different types of courtship song, assault song, tapping associated to the courtship, interaction between males and fl y crackling. For each one, the characteristic oscillograms and frequency spectra are given. Sounds are produced by different mechanisms: femoro-tegminal stridulation, typical for Gomphocerinae, fl y crackling, hind tarsi tapping and alar beat, the last produced by the beat and clash of hind alae, that is, the castanet method which up to now was only known, among Orthoptera, in Stenobothrus rubicundulus Kruseman & Jeekel. A description of the stridulatory fi le of male and female is given, as well as that of the alar special structures. -

Abstract: A new subspecies of the common species Morpho menelaus (Linnaeus, 1758) is described from north-eastern Venezuela, and named Morpho menelaus chantalae Neild, Johnson & Blandin ssp. nov. Its relationship with M. menelaus orinocensis Le Moult, 1925, described from the Orinoco Delta, is discussed. The discovery of this new taxon emphasises the importance of the conservation of forest ecosystems in north-eastern Venezuela, where the distribution and diversification of species may have been driven by local geodynamics and the evolution of ecological contexts. -

Response of Orthoptera Assemblages to Management of Montane Grasslands in the Western Carpathians

Štúra 2,SK-96053 Zvolen, Slovakia; e-mail: [email protected] Abstract: Montane grassy habitats in the Western Carpathians are relatively well preserved, maintain high species richness and are often important in accordance to the nature conservation policy in Europe. However, knowledge about the impact of farming on the habitat quality there is rather poor. The influence of various management types (permanent sheep pen, irregular grazing, mowing) on Orthoptera diversity and species determining assemblages of these habitats were analysed on 72 plots in Poľana Mts Biosphere Reserve. Altogether, 36 Orthoptera species (15 Ensifera, 21 Caelifera) were found, whereas the highest number of species was found on plots with irregular grazing (28 species), followed by plots with mown grass (17) and permanent sheep pens (14). All four measures of the assemblages’ diversity confirmed significant differences. Using Discriminant Function Analysis, correct classification rate of Orthoptera assemblages was unambiguous according to the type of management. Each form of the management harboured several characteristic species. Thus implications regarding the biodiversity conservation and grassland management were given. Die bis zu 80 mm große Art trat im Tier berg-Gebiet bei Prince Albert nur in der roten Farbmorphe auf; von den Individuen hatten wiederum ca. 80% ein grünes und ca. 20% ein rotes Pronotum. Individuen einer grünen Morphe wurden bei Wildemess an der Südküste gefunden. Als Drohverhalten werden die Flügel plötzlich und mit einem Raschellaut nach oben geschlagen. Zur Abwehr bei Annäherung reißt P hym ateu s die Hinterbeine nach oben, und bei Berührung ver spritzen die Insekten eine widerlich riechende milchig-klebrige Flüssigkeit unter hohem Druck. 1. Einleitung Während einer einmonatigen Forschungsexkursion von Mitarbeitern und Studenten des Jenaer Universitätsinstituts für Ökologie durch die südafrikanische Kapprovinz (10.3.-9.4.1995) konn ten im Gebiet um Prince Albert (südliche Große Karoo) einige interessante Beobachtungen an Buschheuschrecken (Gattung Phymateus , ,bush locusts‘ - Johnsen 1990) gemacht werden. -

Most male katydids produce species-specific calls to attract female mates. If katydids, like their close relatives the grasshoppers, can function as effective biological indicators, then acoustic monitoring of katydid songs may result in a novel and non-invasive method to rapidly assess local biodiversity. Furthermore, information regarding threat statuses, distributions and life history traits can be inferred for all South African katydid species, leading to the development of a Katydid Biotic Index (KBI) based on the highly effective Dragonfly Biotic Index. If proven effective, the KBI would allow for biodiversity assessments to account for detailed aspects of katydid species composition in addition to the diversity measures normally utilized for biodiversity assessment (e.g.
