work faster.

What was the reasoning behind partnering with Qualcomm? • As our business matures, our portfolio is broader than ever, serving a diverse set of customers across commercial and consumer channels. This is a natural evolution to support a breadth of form factors, allowing us to tailor the right processor to the right device, while maintaining the same high bar for performance across the portfolio. Over the course of our product development we have worked closely with Intel to tune each processor for Surface and we’re applying that same approach to co-developing silicon with Qualcomm.

Did Microsoft “mess up” on Surface Pro X? • Surface Pro X doesn’t represent a misstep, but a deliberate leap into a new category.

• Through the ongoing investment Microsoft is making to bring the power of Windows to ARM, devices become thinner, lighter, more power-efficient, and leverage the full capabilities of connectivity and cloud. Surface exists to innovate through hardware, but to also give form to next-generation experiences. Therefore, it only makes sense to have Surface Pro X; a product that leverages these platform advantages today and helps to realize the future potential of this platform.

• Most truly innovative products are polarizing at first. Over time, the advantages and utility are demonstrated and adoption increases. This latest release includes improvements for existing Surface Pro X customers as well as a new premium model that gives form to the emerging capabilities of this platform. As with any technology, there are immediate benefits and more possibilities on the horizon. For customers looking for something versatile, portable, capable, and always-connected, Surface Pro X is a compelling choice.

How does Surface Pro X implement modern standby? • To preserve battery life, as a default, Surface devices enter hibernation after 16 hours of being in Connected Standby state. The elapsed time from pressing the power button in a hibernation state to lock screen is approximately 17 seconds, which can negatively impact a user’s productivity. By comparison, the elapsed time from pressing the power button in a Connected Standby state to lock screen is less than 1 second. Devices will remain in a Modern standby state for 16 hours. Devices will transition to hibernation after 16 hours, unless the battery drainage rate exceeds an average of 5 percent over a 24-hour period, which will force devices to enter hibernation.

Can I charge with USB-C? • We recommend using USB-C power supplies capable of delivering more than 45W, recommended to sustain full power operation of the device in addition to fast charging. Note that the device accepts chargers that operate as low as 7.5W, which may prompt the device to operate in a “plugged in – not charging” mode that can drain the battery.

NOTE: You cannot charge from a cable or PSU that uses legacy USB (Type A) connectors or from converter adapters to USB-C.

App compatibility

What apps are compatible with Surface Pro X? Will desktop apps run on Surface Pro X? • Surface Pro X runs the applications you use today with amazing laptop performance: browsing in Microsoft Edge, Chrome, Firefox; working in Office; watching movies on Netflix or Amazon Video; chatting on WeChat; reading PDFs and eBooks, collaborating via Microsoft Teams or sketching and jotting things down in OneNote.

• We know from our Surface customers that these scenarios account for 95 percent of the time people spend on the device.

What is 64-bit emulation, isn’t emulation already on the device? • 32-bit x86 emulation is available in Windows 10 on ARM today and is broadly used. The preview we are making available to Insiders on the Dev Channel this fall will be for 64-bit x86 applications. Applications may have been built for 64-bit x86 to take advantage of more memory on devices and run better on 64- bit processors.

Why was x64 emulation not supported when the platform launched back in 2017? • At the time we launched Windows 10 on ARM, most of the apps that customers wanted were available for the 32-bit x86 architecture, so we focused on building an emulation layer that allowed people to seamlessly run those apps. Since then, we have started to see more apps migrating to 64-bit and we are investing to meet our customers where they are.

Why aren’t all Microsoft apps ported to ARM64 yet? • Microsoft is committed to the ARM64 architecture and has made substantial progress. While not all apps are built for ARM64 today, most apps are available and more have been added recently, such as the new Microsoft Edge browser and Microsoft Teams.

Can users use Chrome? • Yes, users can continue to use Chrome on Windows 10 on ARM. However, Chrome runs under emulation (either x86 or x64) and customers will have a better experience using a native browser like the new Microsoft Edge or Firefox.

What has improved with Windows on ARM over the last 12 months? • In addition to launching new devices based on 8cx platform, Microsoft has partnered with internal and external teams to continue to evolve the platform. The new Edge browser (based on Chromium) has been released.

• We have also recently announced the availability of Microsoft Teams to the Windows on ARM platform. To enable these two applications to run on ARM platform, we closely collaborated with our internal and external partners to port Chromium as well as LibCEF (aka Chromium Embedded Framework (CEF) Dynamic Link Library) and Electron frameworks to ARM64.

• Over the last 12 months, we have enabled running Hyper-V VMs on Windows on ARM systems to allow developers to quickly and easily validate their apps and solutions in a virtualized environment. The DevDiv team at Microsoft released OpenJDK for ARM64 to allow Java developers to publish native apps for the platform. These are just some examples of some of the big improvements we have seen with Windows on ARM platform.

management of Surface UEFI settings.

Does Surface Pro X have TPM? • Surface Pro X includes a firmware Trusted Platform Module (fTPM) but does not include a discrete TPM (dTPM).

What is the difference between discrete TPM and firmware TPM?

• dTPM - A dTPM is a discrete TPM microchip designed to provide security-related functions, primarily involving encryption keys. The TPM is usually installed on the motherboard of a computer, and it communicates with the remainder of the system by using a hardware bus. On Surface devices, the dTPM is hardware protected against intrusion; software uses the protected keys and measurements to verify software validity. Note: The term “discrete TPM” means the same thing as “TPM.”

• fTPM - Instead of using separate hardware chips, firmware TPM (fTPM) is designed to implement TPM functionality in a protected firmware execution space; i.e., the SoC’s security processor -- securing Surface devices at the software level (but not the hardware level).

Why would I need discrete TPM? • The dTPM provides FIPS 140-2 certification, the U.S. government computer security standard. Government customers in the U.S. and Canada typically require dTPM to meet the FIPS 140-2 standards. The dTPM is also compliant with Common Criteria certification used by customers outside of North America. Customers requiring dTPM should consider Surface Pro 7. To learn more about TPM, see TPM documentation.
