How do you measure battery life? We measure battery life based on a user profile that reflects how a typical Surface customer uses their device.

How does typical Surface usage compare to local video playback? Battery measurements — based on local video playback — is now considered obsolete and Microsoft no longer uses this technique. Local video playback can vary across manufacturers depending on device settings and other factors. By moving to a battery test based on a model that represents how our customers typically use our device, we strive to give consumers the best information possible.

What is typical device usage? We leverage qualitative and quantitative data from numerous sources to determine typical Surface device usage. This reflects how our customers use our devices and includes time in modern standby (waiting to be used) and in use browsing websites, working in Office, and with their device open with applications running in idle.

Security & management

Does Surface Go 2 have TPM? Yes:  Commercial SKUs include a discrete (dTPM) 2.0 chip.  Consumer SKUs include a firmware TPM (fTPM).

What is the difference between discrete TPM and firmware TPM?  dTPM - A dTPM is a discrete TPM microchip designed to provide security-related functions, primarily involving encryption keys. The TPM is usually installed on the motherboard of a computer, and it communicates with the remainder of the system by using a hardware bus. On Surface devices, the dTPM is hardware protected against intrusion; software uses the protected keys and measurements to verify software validity. Note: The term “discrete TPM” means the same thing as “TPM.”  fTPM - Instead of using separate hardware chips, firmware TPM (fTPM) is designed to implement TPM functionality in a protected firmware execution space, i.e., the SoC’s security processor -- securing Surface devices at the software level (but not the hardware level).

Why would I need discrete TPM? The dTPM provides FIPS 140-2 certification, the U.S. government computer security standard. Government customers in the U.S. and Canada typically require dTPM to meet the FIPS 140-2 standards. The dTPM is also compliant with Common Criteria certification used by customers outside of North America.

Can TPM be updated as part of Windows and firmware updates? Like other firmware, dTPM can be updated via Windows Update or by using separate MSI files as deployed by commercial customers.

Where can I learn more about TPM? Refer to the TPM documentation.

Will Surface Go 2 support SEMM and DFCI? Surface Go 2 will continue to support SEMM but will not support DFCI. Surface Go 2 will not use a first party UEFI

10 Surface Go 2 Product FAQ

which is required to support DFCI.

How far back will we have OS support with Surface Go 2? New commercial SKUs ship with Windows 10 20H1 and support downgrading to 1809 aka the Windows 10 October 2018 Update. The factory will begin shipping Surface Go 2 with 20H1

LTE/Mobile broadband

What is the cellular connectivity option on Surface Go 2? LTE Advanced. It is the same modem as Surface Go -- Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ X16 LTE. It supports FirstNet and higher speeds.

What are the LTE SKUs?

 Surface Go 2 with Advanced LTE (M3 128 GB)  Surface Go 2 with Advanced LTE (M3 256 GB)

Is GPS available on Wi-Fi SKUs or LTE-only? LTE-only. GPS/GLONASS is only available on devices with the LTE chipset. Includes standalone and assisted GNSS, accuracy up to 3 meters.

Does the LTE model support eSIM? Yes. Surface Go 2 includes eSIM functionality and scenarios per GSMA specifications SGP 21 and SGP 22.

What is the benefit of eSIM? Large organizations with front line workers stand to benefit the most by enabling IT to centrally manage mobile data that has traditionally been difficult to track. eSIM provides the same experience as a physical SIM card — such as access point and IMEI numbers to connect and validate your device — but without the compromises of a standalone card.

When you hand out physical SIM cards to employees, you essentially give up control over how the data gets used. You cannot tell whether they’re used in devices provisioned by the enterprise, gifted to a family member, or simply sold to the highest bidder. eSIM, where the SIM component is built into a chip on the motherboard, enables IT cost centers to fully manage mobile data usage for the first time.
