Andrés Gamón iv CONTEMPORARY U.S. EXPATRIATE ARTISTS IN SAN MIGUEL DE ALLENDE, MEXICO: CHALLENGES OF TRANSNATIONALISM AND ACCULTURATION Andrés Gamón, PhD University of the Incarnate Word, 2014 The purpose of this interpretive qualitative study was to explore the transnational lives of contemporary U.S. expatriate artists living in San Miguel de Allende, a colonial town in the state of Guanajuato, Mexico, and the effect that location and the acculturation process have in their artistic production. The focus of this study was on U.S. expatriate artists living in San Miguel de Allende and how their transnational lifestyle influenced their artistic production, their integration into the local community, and their relationship with other Mexican and international artists living in San Miguel de Allende. Two research questions structured this qualitative study: (a) How do the contemporary U.S. expatriate artists living in Mexico make sense of their transnational lives and experiences? (b) How does the intercultural contact influence their artistic expressions and body of work? Nine participants were selected utilizing the snowball sampling technique and were interviewed through open-ended questions. The analysis of the data revealed five themes that are presented and related to the research questions and professional literature. The study found that the U.S. expatriate artists were able to live comfortably in both cultures and identified the social network factor as the most common connecting thread that wove through all of the participants’ comments. The constant influx of international artists mixed v with the local art community provided the unique setting for the intercultural exchange of ideas and experiences that influenced the artistic perspectives of the U.S. expatriate artists. This study specifically helps to fill in a void regarding knowledge and available scholarly research and literature on the perspective of contemporary U.S. expatriate artists in San Miguel de Allende. The findings of this study not only confirmed earlier studies but also contributes to the expanding field of transnationalism and acculturation. This study provides multilayered perspectives of the expatriate artists in keeping their familial and cultural links to their homeland through social networking and digital media ICT technology. Twenty-five years ago when the last of my four children went off to college, I started painting again. Raised in an artistic family and painting as far back as I can remember, I had all the tools…just hadn’t had the time while raising my children and helping run the family business. And then I discovered pastels. I Pop Rocks got on a plane and flew to Denver for a workshop with Ramon Kelly, came home, and haven’t stopped painting since then. One of my Bucket List goals was to have a painting accepted in the PSA Annual “For Pastels Only” Exhibition. Got to mark that off my list on second try. And now, years later, I am a PSA Master Pastelist. This past November, I received a call from Pastel Society of America’s President, Jimmy Wright, asking if I would consider being part of a three member jury for this year’s 42nd PSA Annual Exhibition “Enduring Brilliance”. The other juror members were Duane Wakeham and Aline Ordman, also Master Pastelists. I was sooo honored. I was told that this would consume at least a week of my life. No problem…I had closed my 47-year-old family business last fall and was ready to be an active part of the pastel world… doing something besides standing at my easel. In preparation for my duties, I was able to go online to the demonstration option for SHOWSUBMIT to familiarize myself with the jurying process.

A short time later, the discovery of silver in Zacatecas and Guanajuato initiated growing migration and a road had to be built to move carts full of merchandise, mules, horses and cattle. When the Chichimecs, ancient hunting and gathering peoples who inhabited the region, began to suffer the consequences of the de - s truction by the Spanish and their cattle on their resources, they banded together and began what is known as the War of the Chichimecs. The conflict affected the fledgling town, which was attacked by the Chichimecs and abandoned by its surviving inhabitants. Years later, so the legend goes, Friar Juan de San Mi - guel and his indigenous followers from differ - ent ethnic groups moved the town to a more appropriate place. Their dogs located a gener - ous spring at the foot of which the town of San Miguel el Grande developed.

The management of sustainable tourism in a World Heritage site is an issue of universal relevance, due to the importance of its preservation for future generations. We also have to consider that in each city tourism can have a different meaning; while for some destinations it implies an asset, for the communities of others it can represent a threat, due to the displacement that the local population can suffer. In the face of any public policy on tourism, it must be considered that each destination has a different potential and is at a different stage in its life. Thus, well-managed tourism can help local people to value authenticity and promote what is distinctive about their place; it can also be an important vehicle for promoting cultural exchange and for preserving traditional local businesses. It is important to recognize that the uniqueness of World Heritage Cities and their relationship to creative industries is part of the most relevant tourist attraction in these historic cities.

Ms. Ransom is artistic director of Serafin Ensemble and Serafin Summer Music, an outgrowth of Serafin String Quartet, which has been lauded by Gramophone and Fanfare Magazine for the 2013 Naxos release of early works by Pulitzer Prize–winning composer Jennifer Higdon and by The Strad Magazine and American Record Guide for their 2010 Centaur debut release.     New Evidence Concerning the “Hotel Bristol” Question in the First Moscow Trial of 1936 Sven-Eric Holmström Leon Sedov Leon Trotsky John Dewey 1. Introduction The purpose of this essay is to introduce new evidence regarding the Hotel Bristol in Copenhagen, the existence of which was questioned after the First Moscow Trial of August, 1936. The issue of Hotel Bristol has perhaps been the most used “evidence” for the fraudulence of the Moscow Trials. This essay examines the Hotel Bristol question as it was dealt with in the Dewey Commission hearings of 1937 in Mexico by carefully examining newly uncovered photographs and primary documents. The essay concludes that • There was a Bristol located where the defendant in question said it was. This Bristol was in more than one way closely connected to a hotel. • Leon Trotsky lied deliberately to the Dewey Commission more than once. • Trotsky’s son Leon Sedov and one of Trotsky’s witnesses also lied. • The examination of the Hotel Bristol question made by the Dewey Commission can at the best be described as sloppy. This means that the credibility of the Dewey Commission must be seriously questioned.
