Summer 2014 Jeani Taylor, Editor ELAINE AUGUSTINE ABOUT THE JURYING PROCESS By Elaine Augustine, PSA Master Pastelist And a Juror for PSA’s 2014 Enduring Brilliance, National Arts Club, NYC. Twenty-five years ago when the last of my four children went off to college, I started painting again. Raised in an artistic family and painting as far back as I can remember, I had all the tools…just hadn’t had the time while raising my children and helping run the family business. And then I discovered pastels. I Pop Rocks got on a plane and flew to Denver for a workshop with Ramon Kelly, came home, and haven’t stopped painting since then. One of my Bucket List goals was to have a painting accepted in the PSA Annual “For Pastels Only” Exhibition. Got to mark that off my list on second try. And now, years later, I am a PSA Master Pastelist. This past November, I received a call from Pastel Society of America’s President, Jimmy Wright, asking if I would consider being part of a three member jury for this year’s 42nd PSA Annual Exhibition “Enduring Brilliance”. The other juror members were Duane Wakeham and Aline Ordman, also Master Pastelists. I was sooo honored. I was told that this would consume at least a week of my life. No problem…I had closed my 47-year-old family business last fall and was ready to be an active part of the pastel world… doing something besides standing at my easel. In preparation for my duties, I was able to go online to the demonstration option for SHOWSUBMIT to familiarize myself with the jurying process. Of course, that was nothing compared to the actual viewing of twelve hundred twenty two pieces of artwork produced by five hundred fifty seven artists! It was an amazing experience. For those of you that have been accepted into this year’s exhibition…CONGRATULATIONS! For those of you that were not accepted…DO NOT BE DISCOURAGED! There was truthfully some wonderful artwork in those twelve hundred twenty two submittals, and we, the jury, could only pick one hundred eighty paintings. Some suggestions I will make for future show submittals: If you have one strong painting and are considering entering it, along with one or two weaker paintings thinking that your chances will be greater if you have three paintings to be considered…DON’T. Stick with the one strong entry. It affected my opinion of the one strong piece to see weaker work submitted by the same artist. I found myself wondering whether the better painting had been done under supervision. Quorum ELAINE AUGUSTINE (continued) There were even several instances of different techniques being used in each of the three paintings. Again, not a good thing. And, usually, it isn’t a good idea to enter three different genre (landscape, portrait, and still life) in the same show. If you do enter more than one painting, I suggest listing the stronger of the two or three, first…that is the one the juror will see first, giving a better initial impression of your artwork. Be very careful when filling out height and width of your artwork. Don’t fill this out backwards. Also, if the prospectus calls for longest side to be 900 pixels, make sure you assign the 900 pixels to the longest side. Keep good records concerning which paintings have been entered into which shows. Many societies prohibit paintings that have hung in one of their previous shows to be exhibited in one of their subsequent shows. Since we are all capable of blindly falling in love with our paintings, it is helpful if you have an artist friend who will honestly critique your work as to its exhibition quality. And lastly, remember that the first exposure to your artwork could be a 1” x ¾” thumbnail, as it was for this PSA exhibition…therefore, the stronger Monster Medley the composition the better!
