Re:membrance of Absence Disrupting perceptions of Jewish and minority identity in Ireland through theatre. by Aideen Wylde Supervisor: Doctor Michael Finneran A thesis submitted for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Department of Drama and Theatre Studies Mary Immaculate College (Coláiste Mhuire Gan Smál) University of Limerick Abstract This research examines social, historical and theoretical reasons that have contributed to the noticeable omission of minority voices, specifically Jewish voices, from Irish theatre narratives to date. The creation of the play Here Shall We Rest (HSWR) was the practical culmination of this investigation. Testimonials from eight participants around their experience as either Irish-Jewish or Jewish and resident in Ireland form the foundational material for the play text of HSWR. The qualitative research methodology employed here combines elements of ethnography and auto-ethnography, practice research and narrative enquiry. As a direct result of the work undertaken, I propose an early iteration of a new methodology for making theatre on minority culture: Third Voice Theatre. Inspired by S. Anksy’s Yiddish play Der Dibuk, HSWR follows the journey of a supernatural character through a liminal landscape inhabited by various narratives expressed in the fieldwork interviews I conducted. These stories expose complexities around Jewish identity, whether self-expressed or socially imposed. The play draws on my experience of perceptions of Jewish culture in Ireland as expressed by some non-Jews, and as non-Jewish myself. The play also seeks to address some of the misconceptions about Jewish heritage and incidences of antisemitisim in Ireland through social and historical lenses. Creating a piece of theatre on this subject allowed me to reimagine negative representations of Jewish characters in Irish theatre. -

“The True Words of Real People”: Documenting the Myth of the Real in Anna Deavere Smith’s Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992 Rosemary Weatherston Do I contradict myself? Very well then, I contradict myself, (I am large, I contain multitudes.) (Walt Whitman “Song of Myself”) “Have you met Anna?” … “Oh, yeah, she’s the sister who wants to take my words.” (Sista Solja)1 I. For almost anyone interested in issues of representation, agency, and voice, the solo work of American playwright and performer Anna Deavere Smith is likely to hold an irresistible if troublesome attraction. Using an uncanny ability to imitate others’ gestures and speech as her method and carefully selected verbatim accounts gathered in interviews as her scripts, in the 1980s and 90s Smith created one-woman shows in which she scrutinized American communities and historical events by enacting the experiences of the individuals who participated in them. Each of these solo performance pieces were a part of her larger ongoing investigation of the relationship between language and subjectivity enti- tled On the Road: A Search for American Character.2 e original impetus behind Smith’s distinctive acting technique stemmed from two main sources: the first was her growing interest in experimenting with the relationship between speech rhythms and the construction and representation of individual identity. e second was her dissatisfaction, both as a teacher and a performer, with methods of acting in which performers drew upon their own experiences as their 189 Rosemary Weatherston primary sources of dramatic characterization (“Introduction” Fires xxiii– vii). In the early stages of the research that would lead to On the Road, Smith and her drama students explored the relationship of voice and self by having the students restage celebrity interviews from talk shows and approach strangers on the street with an offer for them to see them- selves “performed” by actors in exchange for their giving an interview (Richards 40). -

Spring 2005 127 Performing the “Really” Real: Cultural Criticism, Representation, and Commodification in The Laramie Project Jay Baglia and Elissa Foster “In our town we like to know the facts about everybody.” Stage Manager in Thornton Wilder’s Our Town “I have no interest in prying into a town’s unravelings.” Steven Belber in the Tectonic Theatre Project’s The Laramie Project This essay presents a detailed examination of our experiences as audience members of a documentary theatre performance and, following Craig Gingrich- Philbrook’s discussion of autoperformance, an interrogation of how and why it engaged us.1 As performance studies scholars writing in a discipline (communication) that is often removed from mainstream theatre as a focus of analysis, we are excited to explore The Laramie Project, a successful New York play and HBO special.2 In so doing, we are also responding to Richard Schechner’s call to “show exactly how performance studies can be useful to theatre-as-practiced in/by the mainstream.”3 The genre that has come to be known as documentary theatre encompasses a variety of styles and terms, including natural performance, ethnodrama, conversational dramatism, presentational theatre, staged oral history, and could even encompass what sociologist Laurel Richardson has called collective storytelling.4 As we examine three distinct productions of The Laramie Project, we grapple with the claim—both implicit and explicit—that this play is all the more powerful because it is based not on fiction but on the “really real.” In short, we challenge what we perceive to be an over-reliance on the “real” as a basis for claiming theatrical and political significance. -

Special Articles Jewish Experience on Film An American Overview by JOEL ROSENBERG ± OR ONE FAMILIAR WITH THE long history of Jewish sacred texts, it is fair to characterize film as the quintessential profane text. Being tied as it is to the life of industrial science and production, it is the first truly posttraditional art medium — a creature of gears and bolts, of lenses and transparencies, of drives and brakes and projected light, a creature whose life substance is spreadshot onto a vast ocean of screen to display another kind of life entirely: the images of human beings; stories; purported history; myth; philosophy; social conflict; politics; love; war; belief. Movies seem to take place in a domain between matter and spirit, but are, in a sense, dependent on both. Like the Golem — the artificial anthropoid of Jewish folklore, a creature always yearning to rise or reach out beyond its own materiality — film is a machine truly made in the human image: a late-born child of human culture that manifests an inherently stubborn and rebellious nature. It is a being that has suffered, as it were, all the neuroses of its mostly 20th-century rise and flourishing and has shared in all the century's treach- eries. It is in this context above all that we must consider the problematic subject of Jewish experience on film. In academic research, the field of film studies has now blossomed into a richly elaborate body of criticism and theory, although its reigning schools of thought — at present, heavily influenced by Marxism, Lacanian psycho- analysis, and various flavors of deconstruction — have often preferred the fashionable habit of reasoning by decree in place of genuine observation and analysis.
