The Journal of Interreligious Studies Issue 20, March 2017| http://www.irstudies.org Interreligious Resources for Pain Management: Contributions from Hinduism and Christianity Melanie Barbato Pain is one of the afflictions of the human conditions that all religions speak to. However, the resources of religious traditions for pain management have largely been sidelined with the availability of chemical forms of pain relief. Sparked by a growing interest in the cultural dimension of medicine, empirical studies over the last decades have shown the positive impact that the factor “religion” can have on pain. Focusing on Christianity and Hinduism but also including more general interreligious discourse, this paper makes the case for a wider interreligious discussion on pain and pain management and presents examples of promising interreligious interaction on the topic. Medical Perspectives on Religion in Pain Management Joanna Bourke’s History of Pain (2014) devotes a whole chapter to religion.1 She explains how up to the nineteenth century pain management fell largely within the competence of religion. The elimination of pain was not yet possible and patients turned to religion for techniques and narratives that could help them to reframe the experience of pain, to detach themselves from the painful sensation, or to feel in control and at ease despite the pain they experienced. LIVING TO TELL THE TALE- THE KNANAYA CHRISTIANS OF KERALA In the first week of August, Kottayam town witnessed a protest rally by approximately 600 former members of the Knanaya Christians. The rally vouched for the restoration of the erstwhile Knanaya identity of the participants, who by way of marrying outside the Knanaya circle, got ex- communicated from the community. What is it about the Knanaya Community that people who have been ousted from it, refuse to part with their Knanaya identity? Who can give them their Knanaya Identity back? What is the nature of this identity? Belonging to a Jewish-Christian Ancestry, the Knanaya Christians of Kerala are believed to have reached the port of Kodungaloor (Kerala), in 345 CE, under the leadership of Thomas of Cana. This group, also known as ‘Thekkumbaggar’ (Southists) claims to have been practising strict endogamy since the time of their arrival. ‘Thekkumbaggar’ has been opposed to the ‘Vadakkumbaggar’ (Northists) who were the native Christians of that time, for whose ecclestiacal and spiritual uplift, it is believed that the Knanayas migrated from South Mesopotamia. However, the Southists did not involve in marriage relations with the Northists. The Knanaya Christians today, number up to around 2,50,000 people. Within the Knanaya Christians, there are two groups that follow different churches-one follows the Catholic rite and the other , the Jacobite rite. This division dates back to the Coonen Kurush Satyam of 1653, when the Syrian Christians of Kerala, revolted against the Portuguese efforts to bring the Syrian Christians under the Catholic rite. -

With the passage of time, Christian religion rooted well, adapting itself to the customs and practices of the place. There was no attempt on the part of Christians to remain aloof from a given society or tried to remain a separate entity. The Church has accepted, absorbed, and assimilated itself to the good elements of Indian culture. According to its own founding traditions it consists of two ele- ments: a majority descending from autochthonous Indian populations, among whom the first members were converted – according to tradition – by the Apostle Saint Thomas, and a minority descending from Syrian colonists who – once again according to the local tradition – arrived in India through the sea routes from Persia using the monsoon winds. THOMAS CHRISTIANS IN INDIA (16TH-17TH CENTURIES)1 INES G. ¥UPANOV Research Fellow, CNRS, Paris A The encounter between the Jesuit missionaries and the St. Thomas Christians or Syrian Christians in Kerala in the second part of the sixteenth century was for both sides a significant opening to different cultural beliefs and routines. An important and under- studied outcome of this encounter, documented here on the Jesuit side, was the possi- bility of accepting religious plurality, at least within Christianity. The answers to the questions of how to deal with religious diversity in Christianity and globally, oscillated between demands for violent annihilation of the opponents and cultural relativism. The principal argument in this paper is that it was the encounter with these “ancient” Indian Christians that made the missionaries aware of the importance of the accommodationist method of conversion. This controversial method employed in the Jesuit overseas mis- sions among the “heathens”, has therefore been first thought out and tested in their mis- sion among the St. Thomas Christians in the late sixteenth century. The preeminent role of the Jesuit missionaries as the Catholic task force throughout the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries is well known. Posted in their missions, residences and colleges on four continents between 1542 and 1773, they were no simple administrators of the holy rituals and agents of indoctrination. Depending on the missionary context, the local geography of the sacred, and the political environment, the Jesuits creatively re-interpreted Christianity in order to accommodate it to non- Christian peoples and cultures. -

Nidān, Volume 5, No. 1, July 2020, pp. 26-54 ISSN 2414-8636 doi.org/10.36886/nidan.2020.5.1.3 Religious Entanglements and Shared Texts: The Western Syriac Revision and Reception of the Malabar Sermonary Radu Mustață Central European University, (Budapest/Vienna) [email protected] Abstract In the attempt to unravel the religious entanglements of the Syrian Christians from Malabar and the literary networks of this Christian community in the early modern times, the present article focuses: (1) on collections of Syriac Catholic sermons from Malabar composed by the Catholic missionaries in order to create a new Syriac Catholic literary culture since the second half of the sixteenth century; and (2) on the later Western Syriac redaction and reception of this corpus. Consisting both of putative translations/adaptations from Latin and original creations, the manuscript evidence of such literary compositions bears witness to several successive redactions of Syriac texts from Malabar in the early modern times. It shows how this type of theological compositions became a shared literary genre, being appropriated by two rival factions of the Malabar Syrian Christians, namely Paḻayakūṟ and Putaṉkūṟ, throughout their complicated ecclesiastical history, from the second half of the sixteenth century up to the beginning of the eighteenth century, and beyond. The study of these collections of sermons across confessional boundaries testifies to the religious entanglements between the two rival groups, and brings further evidence that the reorientation of the Putaṉkūṟ from the Syro-Catholic tradition from Malabar, based on both Eastern Syriac and European traditions and sources, towards the Western Syriac tradition was a gradual and slow process. -

FINANCE OFFICER IN THE SYRO-MALABAR MAJOR ARCHIEPISCOPAL CHURCH by Matthew CHANGANKARY A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Canon Law Saint Paul University, Ottawa, Canada, in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Canon Law Ottawa, Canada Saint Paul University 2012 © Matthew Changankary, Ottawa, Canada, 2012 ABSTRACT The promulgation of the CCEO and the elevation of the Syro-Malabar Church sui iuris to the status of a major archiepiscopal Church, on 16 December 1992, are important milestones in the recent history of the Church. The new status of the Syro- Malabar Church necessitated a revised system of administration of its temporal goods. Previously the administration of ecclesiastical goods of the Syro-Malabar Church was ruled predominantly by the motu proprios Postquam apostolicis litteris, Cleri sanctitati, and customary law both at the eparchial and parish levels. In the present situation a new ecclesiastical office, that of the finance officer of the major archiepiscopal Church, was created. The thesis presents the office of finance officer and examines critically the canonical aspects of his/her status and duties. It analyzes the canons contained in CCEO related to temporal goods, as well as other universal and particular ecclesiastical norms. In particular, the sources include various synodal decrees, eparchial/diocesan statutes of the Syro-Malabar Church, and relevant particular laws of the respective major archiepiscopal Churches. Pertinent Indian civil laws are also considered in the context of the functions of the finance officer. The thesis provides a historical perspective of the financial administration of the Syro-Malabar Church, and then continues to situate the office of the finance officer in the organizational structure of the financial administration of the Syro-Malabar Church. -
