There are many recreational and leisure opportunities within the area including National Hunt racing at Cheltenham, golf at Cheltenham, Painswick, Cirencester and Minchinhampton and a network of paths and bridleways provide for excellent walking and riding throughout this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Haregrove Haregrove, which is Listed Grade II, is a pretty Georgian fronted Cotswold stone Farmhouse, with part dating to the 15th Century, having converted outbuildings sitting at the head of a very long drive in a peaceful rural valley in prime Gloucestershire. The house sits on one side of the valley and is approached through a stone pillar entrance down a long carriage drive with paddocks flanking on either side. On approach there is a further set of gates with a gravel parking and turning area in front of the house. The property is constructed of Cotswold stone and brick under a stone tile roof and is set beautifully within its gardens that are laid out to the south and east of the house grading down to the lake at the base of the valley. The grounds are made up of fields interspersed with mature woodland copses and the lake is stream fed. Features within the house include stone floors, stone mullion windows, wooden doors with plenty of built-in storage. The accommodation in the main house is arranged over three floors in the original farmhouse end. Of particular note is the well-proportioned drawing room with an impressive stone inglenook fireplace with large bressumer beam over, exposed timbers and a stone floor with built-in shelving and cabinets across one wall. Carvings by the fireplace were probably executed by visiting Monks, when the house was used as a retreat. The Dining room is a charming, light room being double aspect with a large ¾ height floor to ceiling sash window with beautiful views of the valley to the front of the house. There is a built-in bookshelf with storage cabinet beneath and a brick fireplace with stone surround housing a log burner. Stairs lead to the 1st and 2nd floors with 3 double Bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. The kitchen/breakfast room is well equipped with a four-oven Aga and electric hob, a range of on-floor and wall-mounted kitchen cabinets with granite work surfaces and steps lead down to a snug or breakfast room and beyond this is the utility/laundry or boot room with doors to outside. A further door leads to a converted barn that is triple height into the pitch and consists of an open sitting room or playroom with a built-in log burner to one side, a bathroom on the ground floor and steps rise up to a mezzanine bedroom above. There is an opening through to a further converted barn (currently blocked off) but could easily be brought back in the main accommodation if required. The secondary barn, currently used as separate accommodation, consists of an open-plan triple- height sitting room with kitchen, bathroom and mezzanine bedroom on the first floor. Within the grounds is a useful agricultural storage barn and running at the base of the valley is the Painswick stream feeding a pretty lake situated below the house.     Gloucestershire County Council single member ward review Response from Stroud Constituency Labour Party Introduction On 30 November the Local Government Boundary Commission started its second period of consultation for a pattern of divisions for Gloucestershire. Between 30 November and 21 February the Commission is inviting comments on the division boundaries for GCC. Following the completion of its initial consultation, the Commission has proposed that the number of county councillors should be reduced from 63 to 53. The districts have provided the estimated numbers for the electorate in their areas in 2016; the total number for the county is 490,674 so that the average electorate per councillor would be 9258 (cf. 7431 in 2010). The main purpose of this note is to draw attention to the constraints imposed on proposals for a new pattern of divisions in Stroud district, which could lead to anomalies, particularly in ‘bolting together’ dissimilar district wards and parishes in order to meet purely numerical constraints. In it own words ‘the Commission aims to recommend a pattern of divisions that achieves good electoral equality, reflects community identities and interests and provides for effective and convenient local government. It will also seek to use strong, easily-identifiable boundaries. ‘Proposals should demonstrate how any pattern of divisions aids the provision of effective and convenient local government and why any deterioration in equality of representation or community identity should be accepted. Representations that are supported by evidence and argument will carry more weight with the Commission than those which merely assert a point of view.’ While a new pattern of ten county council divisions is suggested in this note, it is not regarded as definitive but does contain ways of avoiding some possible major anomalies.

    STRATEGY, MISSION AND PEOPLE IN A RURAL DIOCESE A CRITICAL EXAMINATION OF THE DIOCESE OF GLOUCESTER 1863-1923 BRIAN KNIGHT A thesis submitted to the University of Gloucestershire in accordance with the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities August, 2002 11 Strategy, Mission and People in a Rural Diocese A critical examination of the Diocese of Gloucester 1863-1923 Abstract A study of the relationship between the people of Gloucestershire and the Church of England diocese of Gloucester under two bishops, Charles John Ellicott and Edgar Charles Sumner Gibson who presided over a mainly rural diocese, predominantly of small parishes with populations under 2,000. Drawing largely on reports and statistics from individual parishes, the study recalls an era in which the class structure was a dominant factor. The framework of the diocese, with its small villages, many of them presided over by a squire, helped to perpetuate a quasi-feudal system which made sharp distinctions between leaders and led. It is shown how for most of this period Church leaders deliberately chose to ally themselves with the power and influence of the wealthy and cultured levels of society and ostensibly to further their interests. The consequence was that they failed to understand and alienated a large proportion of the lower orders, who were effectively excluded from any involvement in the Church's affairs. Both bishops over-estimated the influence of the Church on the general population but with the twentieth century came the realisation that the working man and women of all classes had qualities which could be adapted to the Church's service and a wider lay involvement was strongly encouraged.

    The Painswick Beacon Sine praeiudicio Volume 37 Number 12 March 2015 Post Office Consultation Parish Council urges residents to support proposal or lose a Post Office The proposed Post Office Outreach in the Town Hall will not now commence in late February/early March as was reported at the January Parish Council Meeting (see last Month's Beacon). On 3rd February the Parish Council received a copy of a letter from Leighton Barratt, Field Change Advisor for the Post Office. This letter, addressed generally, stated that the Post Office had now commenced "public consultation" regarding the proposal and an email from the Post Office said that the Parish Council might wish to circulate/ display the letter and an accompanying poster in the town. The Beacon was sent a copy of the letter and poster by the Parish Council who have also circulated the letter to various individuals and diplayed it on the Notice Board. The letter is reproduced on Replacement Post Box pages 4 and 5 of the Beacon. Cotswolds Area profile: Supporting documents Introduction National Character Areas map As part of Natural England’s responsibilities as set out in the Natural Environment White Paper,1 Biodiversity 20202 and the European Landscape Convention,3 we are revising profiles for England’s 159 National Character Areas North (NCAs). These are areas that share similar landscape characteristics, and which East follow natural lines in the landscape rather than administrative boundaries, making them a good decision-making framework for the natural environment. Yorkshire & The North Humber NCA profiles are guidance documents which can help communities to inform West their decision-making about the places that they live in and care for. The information they contain will support the planning of conservation initiatives at a East landscape scale, inform the delivery of Nature Improvement Areas and encourage Midlands broader partnership working through Local Nature Partnerships.
