During his first season behind Florida’s bench, Gallant guided the Panthers to a 38-29-15 record and 91 points, a 25-point improvement from the previous season. Gallant, 52, was formerly head coach of the Columbus Blue Jackets (2003-2004 & 2005-2007) and prior to his time in Florida, served as an assistant coach with the Montreal Canadiens (2012-14) and New York Islanders (2007-09). Before Montreal, Gallant spent three seasons (2009- 2012) as the head coach of the Saint John Sea Dogs (QMJHL). Bylsma joined the Sabres after spending six seasons as the head coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins, where he led the team to a 252-117-32 overall regular-season record and became the winningest head coach in Penguins history. He began the 2015-16 season with the best points percentage (.668) of any head coach in NHL history with at least three full seasons coached.

The Grand Haven, Michigan native began his coaching career in 2004-05 as an assistant coach for the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks (AHL).
