BUFFALO-FLORIDA CONNECTIONS: D Brian Campbell spent the majority of his career with Buffalo. Campbell was drafted by Buffalo in the sixth round (156th overall) in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft. Campbell played 391 games for the Sabres recording 176 points (32-144-176) between the 1998-08 seasons. D T.J. Brennan was recently acquired from the Sabres. He was selected in the second round (31st overall) by Buffalo in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft. Brennan played 21 games recording two goals for Buffalo. Panthers Assistant Coach Craig Ramsay played his entire NHL career for Buffalo, drafted in the second round (19th overall) in the 1971 NHL Entry Draft, Ramsay posted 672 points (252-420-672) in 1,070 games. After retirement, Ramsay served in several roles with Buffalo, including interim head coach, assistant coach, assistant general manager and director of player personnel.

CALDER WATCH: At the midpoint of the season, NHL.com and ESPN.com has named F Jonathan Huberdeau as one of the frontrunners to win this year's Calder Trophy. The 19-year old rookie ranks first among rookie leaders in goals (12), second in points (21) and second in shots (91). He leads all rookie forwards (more than one game) in average time on ice (16:55). With 12 goals in his first 25 NHL games of his career, Huberdeau joins Pittsburgh forwards Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin along with Capitals forward Alex Ovechkin and Anaheim forward Teemu Selanne as the only active players to accomplish this feat.

STAYING IN THE SUNSHINE STATE: Florida begins a two-game homestand hosting Buffalo tonight, before playing New Jersey on Saturday. After a trip to Tampa Bay on Apr. 2, the Cats return home for two games vs. Washington (Apr. 6) and vs. Ottawa (Apr. 7).

BETWEEN THE PIPES: G Jacob Markstrom has been solid for the Panthers over his last four starts, stopping 139 of the 145 shots he has faced (.958 SV%). During this recent stretch, he made 28 saves on Tuesday night in a 3-2 loss to the Maple Leafs. On Mar. 24 against the NY Islanders (0-3 L) he turned away 34 of 35 shots, earning third star of the game honors. On Mar. 21, he recorded a career best 44 saves in a 3-1 win over the NY Rangers, earning first star of the game. On Mar. 19, Markstrom made 33 saves in a 4-1 win over the , earning second star of the game honors. He has allowed just six goals in his last four starts.

PICKIN' UP POINTS: With a goal Tuesday against Toronto, C Shawn Matthias now has nine points (7-2-9) in his last 14 games. Matthias ranks third on the team in goals (10), while tying for fifth in points (13). With an assist Monday against Toronto, RW Tomas Kopecky has recorded 15 points (10-5-15) in his last 21 games played. Kopecky is tied for the team lead in points (21) and goals (12).

LAST MINUTE MUELLER: F Peter Mueller scored his 7th goal of the season on Mar. 23 with just 9.8 seconds left on the clock in the second period. For Mueller, it was his third goal in the final minute of the second period this season. His other last minute goals came on Jan. 26 vs Philadelphia (50 seconds left) and Feb. 3 at Buffalo (54 seconds left). It's the 10th time Florida has scored in the final minute of a period this season. Tomas Kopecky, Jerred Smithson and Jonathan Huberdeau have scored two each while Filip Kuba also has had a late period tally.

SOUPY ON ICE: After posting a regular season career high of 32:51 TOI last season against Minnesota, D Brian Campbell has surpassed that mark twice this season. First he played 33:16 on Feb. 28 against Buffalo and improved that mark by two seconds (33:18) on Mar. 8 against Winnipeg. The blueliner, who led the NHL in TOI per game last season, is currently third overall in averaging 26:34 this season. Campbell sits second in goals by a defenseman with seven and is second on Florida in points (19) and has recorded 11 points (3-8-11) in his last 17 games. In addition, Campbell ranks tied for first among NHL’s defensemen in power play goals (6) and is tied for fourth in power play points (12).

Under Dineen’s leadership, Florida finished the season with a 38-26-18 mark, to earn its first playoff berth since 2000. In the 2012 post season the Panthers forced the eventual Eastern Conference Champion New Jersey Devils to seven games, before losing in double overtime.

Prior to joining Florida, Dineen spent six seasons as head coach of the (AHL), where he compiled a record of 266-155-59 with a .616 winning percentage.

A third-round draft pick of the Hartford Whalers in the 1982 NHL Entry Draft, Dineen played in 1,188 career NHL games with Hartford (1984-91, 1995-97), Philadelphia (1991-95), Carolina (1997-99), Ottawa (1999-2000) and Columbus (2000-03). Throughout his 19-year NHL playing career, he scored 355 goals with 405 assists, while adding 2,229 PIM.

MEET THE NEW BOSS After being named interim head coach of the Buffalo Sabres on Feb. 20, Ron Rolston became the 16th head coach in Sabres history. Rolston joins the Sabres after spending the 2011-12 and 2012-13 seasons as head coach of the Rochester Americans (AHL), compiling a 63-44-17 regular-season record. Prior to joining the Americans, Rolston spent seven seasons as head coach with USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program, where he led the United States Under-18 team to three gold medals and a silver medal in four tournaments as head coach at the IIHF World Under-18 Championship.

CHANGING OF THE GUARD The Sabres hired Ron Rolston to serve as interim head coach on Feb. 20 after the Sabres got off to a 6-10-1 (.382) start. It was the first time the Sabres had replaced their head coach mid-season since John Muckler took over for Rick Dudley on Dec. 11, 1991 after a 9-15-4 (.393) start to the season. The 1991-92 team went 22-22-8 under Muckler, ending the season 31-37-12 and finishing third in the Adams Division to clinch a playoff spot.

BUF G Jhonas Enroth, BUF D Mike Weber and FLA C Shawn Matthias were all drafted in the second round of the 2006 NHL Entry Draft. Enroth, drafted by Buffalo, was the 46th overall selection, Matthias was selected by Detroit one pick later with the 47th overall selection, and Weber, also picked by Buffalo, was the 57th overall selection.

BUF D Jordan Leopold played with FLA G Jose Theodore for two seasons on the (2006-07, 2007-08). FLA RW George Parros also played for the Avalanche in 2006-07.

FLA C Mike Santorelli and BUF D Alexander Sulzer played together for two seasons (2008-09, 2009-10) on the Nashville Predators, along with FLA RW Jerred Smithson. Sulzer and Santorelli also played together for the Panthers during the 2010-11 season after they both were traded to Florida.

FLA HC Kevin Dineen was the head coach of the Portland Pirates for the three seasons the Sabres were affiliated with the Pirates. Dineen helped develop three straight AHL rookies of the year in Nathan Gerbe (2009), Tyler Ennis (2010) and Luke Adam (2011). Dineen was also a teammate of BUF AC James Patrick on the Canadian Olympic Team at the 1984 Games in Sarajevo.

BUF AC Kevyn Adams was also a teammate of Dineen’s on the 2000-01 squad.

FLA AC Craig Ramsay began his coaching career with Buffalo when he served as an assistant coach during the 1986-87 season and took over as interim head coach later in the year. Prior to leaving the Sabres in 1993, Ramsay also served as the team’s director of player personnel and assistant general manager. Ramsay played for the Sabres for 14 seasons and is second in franchise history with 1,070 games played for the club.

BUF RW Drew Stafford and FLA D Tyson Strachan were both born on October 30. Stafford, born in 1985, is one year younger than Strachan, who was born in 1984.

Rolston joined the Sabres after spending the 2011-12 and 2012-13 seasons as head coach of the Rochester Americans (AHL). As head coach of the Americans, Rolston compiled a 63-44-17 regular-season record. Prior to joining the Americans, Rolston spent seven seasons as head coach with USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program, where he became the first coach in U.S. history to lead the United States Under-18 team to three gold medals (2005, 2009, 2011) at the International Federation (IIHF) World Under-18 Championship, adding a silver medal (2007) in his other appearance as head coach. Rolston also served as head coach for the U.S. National Junior Team at the IIHF U20 World Championship in 2007 and 2009.
