Fairfield County Pride Guide 2014 Dear Friends,

Pride is a chance for us to reflect on our community. For the last six months I have had the honor of serving as TCC’s first Executive Direc- tor and I have been fortunate enough to talk with hundreds of you. From those conversations two truths about the LGBTQ community in Fairfield County have been made clear:

1. Our community is strong, passionate and vibrant. We are a com- munity full of intelligent, caring, and proud individuals who want to see the LGBTQ community play a bigger role in Fairfield County.

2. We need to be more visible. We need to be clear about who we are and what we stand for and that needs to be made visible to everyone in Fairfield County. There are thousands in our county who are not yet connected to our mission and there are thousands more who need our services who do not yet know they exist.

Pride is about more than celebrating our community; it is a chance to cre- ate that visibility. It is a chance to ignite a beacon of light that everyone in this county and beyond will see. The days of our community living in the shadows are over. It is now time to make it clear that Fairfield County has a large LGBTQ community that is growing stronger everyday.

I hope you will join us in celebrating Pride this June at one of the great events listed in this guide. We need your help to create that visibility and to enter into a new era for our community.

With pride,

Anthony Crisci Executive Director Triangle Community Center

CTgay.org/pride a history of Pride On May 22, 2014 a Harvey Milk postage stamp is being released on what would have been his 84th birthday. Although our Pride grows out of his work and that of countless other LGBTQ heroes, the history of Pride - with a capital “P” is directly related to the morning of Saturday, June 28 1969. LGBTQ patrons rioted after a police raid on the Stonewall In on Christopher Street , ushering in the modern Rights Movement. It was a watershed moment in LGBTQ his- tory, as if all of us said in unions and for the first time, “We’re here, we’re queer, get used to it!” Activist Frank Kamany stated that prior to Stonewall there were fifty to sixty Gay organizations in the U.S. and a year after there were at least fifteen-hundred! A movement was born.

In November 1969, months after Stonewall, Craig Rodwell and other members of the Eastern Regional Conference of Homophile Organizations laid out plans for a demonstration by way of an organizational resolution that read, “to be held annually on the last Saturday in June in New York City to commemorate the 1969 spontaneous demonstrations on Christopher Street and this demonstra- tion shall be called CHRISTOPHER STREET LIBERATION DAY. The resolution also proposed that “Homophile” organizations around the country be contracted and encouraged to hold parallel demonstrations to create a nationwide show of support.

The first Parade in U.S. history, a 51 block march from Christopher Street to Central Park, was held on the first anniversary of the Stonewall Upris- ing, June 28, 1970. The structure of the original event as a march and in subse- quent years additional events held in June, creating Pride month, are attributed to “The Mother of Pride,” Brenda Howard, a bisexual woman. Even the term “Pride” has been attributable to Howard. On the same day, June 28 1970, events were held in Los Angeles and San Francisco, and Pride was born - largely through coordinated efforts by Howard.

In 1971 Pride parades were added in Boston, Dallas, Milwaukee, London, Paris, West Berlin, and Stockholm. By 1972 new parades were added in many other cities around the world. In 1982 InterPride as formed to assist in planning Pride events worldwide and now has more that 180 regional and local member Pride organizations. Also in 1982 recognitions for those suffering and dying with AIDS were added to many Pride events. In June 2000 Bill Clinton declared June “Gay and Lesbian Pride Month and in 2009 Barack Obama declared June LGBTQ Pride Month.

TCC has sponsored and organized Pride events in Fairfield County since the 1990s: from those at Unitarian Universalist Church in Westport, to more recently at St. Paul’s Norwalk, to the most ambitious “Pride in the Park” event scheduled for this June 14 at Mathew’s Park in Norwalk. The dictionary defines “pride” as a feeling that you respect yourself and deserve to be respected by other people. We thank Brenda Howard for choosing a title that aptly embodies the spirit of the Stonewall Uprising and the birth of LGBTQ Pride, and all LGBTQ people for embodying the spirit of Pride each and every day.
