Introduction Results

Odisha coast is known to harbour around 605 fish species under 138 families and 27 orders'. The Order- Perciforrnes family includes 5 species viz., nigrus (Cuvier), argenteus Family- Heamulidae (Forsskal), P. argyeus (Valenciennes), P. kaakan (Cuvier), P. maculatum (Blotch)! in Odisha coast. The - Diagramma pictum (Thunberg, 1792) present record of the species Diagramma pictum Diagnosis: The body of the fish is oblong, laterally (Thunberg, 1792) belonging to the Family compressed. Total length of the fish is 16.52 em, Heamulidae is the first record to the Odisha coast. Standard Length (SL) is 13.35 cm and the Head Materials and Methods Length (HL) is 3.9 em, respectively. The standard head profile strongly convex, scales present on entire The specimen was collected on 25.08.2012 from head (except front of snout, lips and chin), mouth a fishing boat operated at Gopalpur-on-Sea, Odisha small, lips thick, chin with 6 pores, teeth villiform coast. FIRST RECORD OF DIAGRAMMA PICTUM 979973

Diagramma pictum (Thunberg) is the first record from Table—2 Meristic characters the Odisha coast. The present species is having little 1. Dorsal fin X+23 variation in the scales in the lateral line and scales above the lateral line, with the species earlier 2. Anal fin III+7 described from Indian water3,4, which may be due to 3. Pectoral fin 16 the Geographical location. The species Plectorhinchus diagramma (Linnaeus, 1758)5 is close 4. Pelvic fin I+5 to the present record. However the number of dorsal fin spines is 11 in the P. diagramma (Linnaeus, 1758) 5. Caudal fin 17 and 10 in the present record. Similarly, variations are 6. No. of lateral line scales 65 also there in the scales above the lateral line and of the lateral line between the two species. 7. Scales above lateral line 26 Acknowledgement 8. Scales below lateral line 20 Authors are thankful to the Head, Department of 9. No. of gill rakers 13+7 Zoology, Berhampur University for providing 10.
