She was the daughter of Count Jerzy Detloff Fleming and Princess Antonina Czartoryska. She married Prince Adam Kazimierz Czartoryski on November 18, 1761 in Wołczyn. In Paris in 1772 she met Benjamin Franklin, one of the leaders of the American Revolution, and the French philosophers Jean-Jacques Rousseau and Voltaire, who at the time brought new ideas to the old order. In 1775 she completely transformed (together with her husband) the Czartoryski Palace at Puławy into an intellectual and political meeting place. Izabela discovered the talent of the young painter Aleksander Orlowski and financed him. In 1784 she jointed the Patriotic Party. After the Kosciuszko Uprising two of her sons were taken by Catharine of Russia as political hostages. -

REKONESANS I Katalog pamiątek złożonych w Domu Gotyckim w Puławach jest ukoronowa- niem działalności Izabeli Czartoryskiej, związanej z prowadzonym przez nią opisem zbiorów muzealnych. Dzieło ma formę trzytomowego ilustrowanego rękopisu. Ilustracje do niego, często kopie zmieszczonych w Domu Gotyckim portretów, wykonał Józef Richter, malarz związany z książęcą parą, zwłaszcza po roku 1804, w którym Polskę opuścił Jan Piotr Norblin. Zanim dzieło Czar- toryskiej uzyskało ostateczny kształt, miało dwie wersje wstępne i formę skró- coną, będącą inwentarzem pamiątek. Pierwszy wariant wstępny to wersja francuskojęzyczna: Cataloque historique et détaillé des objets réunis à la Maison Gotique à Puławy, achevé l’an 1809, drugi stanowi jej tłumaczenie: Katalog rozumowany Domu Gotyckiego. Wersją będącą tylko rejestrem pamią- tek opisanych w dziele Czartoryskiej jest Poczet pamiątek zachowanych w Domu Gotyckim w Puławach, z którego Przedmowy wynika, że w roku wydania książki, a więc w 1828, Katalog pamiątek złożonych w Domu Gotyc- kim w Puławach był dziełem ukończonym, powstającym, jak większość przy- gotowywanych przez Czartoryską opisów pamiątek, z myślą o publikacji1. Praktykę opisu pamiątek rozpoczęła Czartoryska wraz z powstaniem Świą- tyni Sybilli i Domu Gotyckiego. Z dziejów Macierzy Polskiej we Lwowie na przełomie XIX i XX wieku Streszczenie Artykuł traktuje o edukacji historycznej dla ludu na przełomie XIX i XX w. Punk- tem wyjścia są pierwsze całościowe dzieje Polski dla chłopów autorstwa Izabeli z Flem- mingów Czartoryskiej. Jej Pielgrzym w Dobromilu powstał z myślą o spopularyzowaniu historii ojczystej oraz zaszczepieniu pojęcia ojczyzny w świadomości chłopów. Dużo miejsca poświęcono w nim kobietom: władczyniom, szlachciankom oraz chłopkom. Księżna starała się o ukształtowanie pożądanego społecznie wzorca włościanki: kobiety pobożnej, dobrej, schludnej i pracowitej, spełnionej w roli żony, matki i gospodyni. Krytykowała kobiece pijaństwo, prostytucję, lenistwo, guślarstwo, kłótliwość i inne przywary. Narracja oparta była na balansowaniu między wyidealizowanym obrazem wiejskich stosunków oraz piętnowaniem tego, co w gromadach naganne i wymagające zmiany. Autorka artykułu stara się odpowiedzieć na pytania: 1) Dlaczego po ponad sześciu dekadach od wydania Pielgrzyma w Dobromilu dziełko nadal uznawano za przydatne w edukacji warstw plebejskich zaboru austriackiego oraz 2) W jaki sposób lwowska fundacja starała się podtrzymać zainteresowanie autorką i jej aktywnością twórczą adre- sowaną do „niższych” warstw społecznych. Dochodzi do wniosku, że było to spowodo- wane zarówno deficytem nowych i dobrych opracowań przeznaczonych dla warstw plebejskich, jak i przyjętą przez Macierz Polską strategią wydawniczą obejmującą włą- czanie w obręb narodu polskiego przez zapoznawanie z klasyką narodowej historiografii ARTYKUŁY i literatury. Przed wybuchem I wojny światowej zaznaczył się w niej także trend polega- jący na przybliżaniu czytelnikom MP określonych środowisk umysłowych, co pozosta- wało w związku z akcentowaniem roli inteligencji w porozbiorowych dziejach narodu. -

La publication des récits de voyage semble néanmoins ne pas aller de soi, ou du moins ne susciter que peu d’intérêt : en témoigne, parmi bien d’autres, le cas de Stanisław Staszic, voyageur polonais ayant accompli le Grand Tour à la fin du XVIIIe siècle, et dont le Journal de voyage [Dziennik podróży 1789-1805] n’a paru qu’en 1931. Dans ces conditions, une tradition polonaise du genre ne peut que difficilement se mettre en place et les voyageurs, non informés des récits de leurs compatriotes, s’appuient en général, pour produire de nouveaux récits, sur des traditions étrangères. C’est ce qui explique que Stanisław Dunin-Borkowski puisse écrire dans la préface à son Voyage en Italie des années 1815 et 1816 [Podróż do Włoch w latach 1815 i 1816] (1820) que « c’est une contradiction humaine incompréhensible que de constater que [notre] nation, dont de nombreux représentants instruits visitent l’Europe entière, ne possède pour l’instant aucun voyage original. Et qu’il n’existe jusqu’à présent aucun narrateur qui ait présenté cette terre d’Italie, tellement connue, en langue polonaise »2. -

POWSTANIE MUZEÓW NARODOWYCH [The activity of Izabela Czartoryska in the service of education and cultivating patriotism. The creation of national museums] S u m m a r y : In the 21st century, museum education in Poland is developing at a dynamic pace. One can notice the emergence of modern, interactive museums with attractive architecture and rich educational programs (e.g. the Warsaw Rising Museum, the Chopin Museum and the recently opened Museum of the History of Polish Jews POLIN, the Jozef Pilsudski Museum, and the Polish History Museum, which is still under construction). The educational activities are aimed at different target groups, including both organized groups such as school classes or groups of persons with disabilities, as well as individual visitors, such as children, families or the socially excluded. In the present article, the author depicts the first Polish museum created by private initiative at the turn of the 19th century – a museum created of Princess Izabela Czartoryska (née Countess Flemming) “from the bottom of her heart”. This was the period in which Poland had completely disappeared from the map of Europe, having lost its national sovereignty. The contemporary educational dimensions of Polish cultural and museum heritage are particularly important in the context of such historical events – particularly the commitment of distinguished Poles and the wider Polish society for the perseverance and survival of Polish culture. Analyzing the origins of Polish museology, including the formation of the first patriotic museums and national patriotic museums abroad (for instance in Rapperswil, Switzerland), the author underlines the importance of these activities for the development of the Polish educational thought, as well as museum and patriotic education. -

LA BELLA PRINCIPESSA and THE WARSAW SFORZIAD Circumstances of Rebinding and Excision of the Portrait Katarzyna Woźniak 10.05.2015 In the study titled La Bella Principessa and the Warsaw Sforziad, published in January 2011, Professor Kemp provided evidence that the portrait of Bianca Sforza was a part of an illuminated book printed on vellum - La Sforziada by Giovannni Simonetta, stored in the National Library in Warsaw1. The excision took place, most probably, during the process of rebinding. This was done meticulously, as his paper showed, although the knife slipped at near the bottom of the left edge2. At that moment, the portrait and the book were separated from each other and ceased to share the same fortune. 1. Apollo Korzeniowski's Poland and Muscovy
APOLLO KORZENIOWSKI’S POLAND AND MUSCOVY Jerzy Zdrada The Jagiellonian University, Cracow Apollo Korzeniowski’s treatise entitled Poland and Muscovy has escaped the attention of scholars writing about the attitudes of Poles towards Russia in the post-partition era; to date only general summaries of the work have appeared in biographical notes on this “forgotten poet”. Presenting the essential idea of Korzeniowski’s “treatise-cum-memoir”, Czesław Miłosz rightly warns us against the rash tendency to ascribe nationalism to its author.1 In his turn, Roman Taborski, while granting the work “some documentary value”, defi nes it as “a sad testimony to a loss of perspicacity in this writer, who used to be so discerning in evaluating social phenomena”, adding that the treatise is “a historiosophic study which is imbued with extreme national chauvinism and continues the traditions of messianist ideology” by idealising Poland’s historical past and vilifying the Russian nation.2 In his pithy observation, Zdzisław Najder aptly emphasises the fact that “this embittered disquisition […] deals, in passionate tones, with Russo-Polish relations from the time of the fi rst partition” and with Russia’s place in Europe. Korzeniowski, Najder adds, shows Russia against the historical background of “a struggle between barbarism and civilization” as “a contemporary embodiment of Asiatic, Tartar, and Byzantine bar- barism”, thus accusing Western Europe of a “cowardly or naive attitude towards Russia”.3 However true these views may seem, they fail to do adequate justice to the con- tent, the character and the aim of Korzeniowski’s Poland and Muscovy. THE EUROPEAN JOURNAL OF LIFE WRITING VOLUME IX(2020)93–112 From Social Performance to Expressing the ‘True Self’: The Change in the Communicational Assumptions in Polish Letter-Writing Manuals from the Eighteenth and the Early Nineteenth Centuries in the Context of the Emergence of Modern Sincerity in the West Agata Sikora Independent Researcher ABSTRACT While the traditional model of verbal expression was founded on the premise that individuals should skilfully use conventions in order to achieve their goals, the modern approach, based on sincerity, assumes that people should problematise the truth about their own selves, and their utterances should be interpreted in relation to that truth. THE NOVEMBER UPRISING ARMY DURING CAPITULATION TALKS OF SEPTEMBER 1831 The November Uprising is generally associated with a series of remarka- ble victories and the courageous struggle put up by the small Kingdom of Poland against the powerful Russia. It featured the legendary battles of Stoczek, Olszynka Grochowska, Wawer and Iganie. The insurgents, among them Juliusz Konstanty Ordon, have been made immortal by Romantic poet- ry. The main army participated in capitulation talks on several occasions. Ch³opicki did not want the cause to end with a defeat of Naples, Skrzy- necki was afraid that the uprising would follow the fate of the battle of Maciejowice, while Rybiñski was terrified that the armed struggle would conclude with a second battle of Radoszyce. Military defeat was not the only thing that concerned Polish generals. They were also intimidated by the possibility that their professional skills could be exposed to ridicule. Those fears were voiced in the final stage of the uprising, and they became intensi- fied near the time of the battle of Warsaw (67 September 1831). In the disputes waged by Polish émigrés abroad, capitulation talks were not recog- nized as a tactical maneuver for fighting the enemy. The attitude displayed by General Hieronim (Girolamo) Ramorinos second corps was the only exception1 . The discussion surrounding the second corps was ruthless and uncompromising.
