Squash Auckland 2016 Annual report 7 General Manager’s Report On the court 2017 will be a massive year for squash in the region with the Oceania Junior Championships being held at Henderson in mid-April, and followed a week later by the World Masters Games and the squash event being hosted by North Shore. Raising the profile of squash in Auckland

John Fletcher NZ Fitness Expo General Manager Squash Auckland received the opportunity to set up a site which included one of our Microcourts at the NZ Fitness Expo which was held at the ASB Showgrounds on the 9th & 10th July 2016. It has been a year of transition for Squash Auckland during 2016, The Expo saw around 10,000 visitors come through the doors with the implementation of a new three year Strategic Plan to cover which offered a fantastic opportunity to share our game with a from 2016 through to 2019, along with a changing of the guard captive audience looking for new fitness options. The Microcourt, with Philip Vodanovich stepping down from the General Manager’s combined with a TV streaming the PSA YouTube channel role in May after five successful years of leading the charge at continuously, allowed us to engage with patrons and hand out Squash Auckland. It has been a whirlwind first five months, and details about our clubs. The event gathered close to 150 leads of our sport as a whole certainly has its challenges to be faced and people wanting to know more about squash. A huge thank you to overcome. However it’s an exciting future for squash with all the those enthusiastic volunteers which helped out on the site during new innovations such as ‘Interactive Squash’ coming out and I’m the weekend! excited to see where we can take it together as a region with our fantastic group of people and clubs. Implementing new initiatives such as the Spring Doubles Interclub aim to ensure that we are offering players what they want and continue to engage, which is key to keeping them in our game. Insert photo – ‘NZFE’ The round of Club Forums held this year were a great indication of what we can achieve together through the sharing of ideas and resources. Plenty of common strengths and weaknesses were identified, with those clubs that attended leaving with lots of new concepts to test at their own club. As the old cliché goes, there is no point reinventing the wheel. We look forward to working more closely with clubs next year to help improve club capability and ensure the programmes we are running at clubs and schools can be followed up with a quality membership experience. However, clubs need to be aware that the old ‘annual’ membership model is quickly becoming a thing of the past, and flexible casual or short- term memberships have to be made available to bring the next generation of squash players on board.

Raising the profile of our sport is a big key to drawing more players to squash, and with PSA coverage becoming a regular feature on Sky TV, local PSA events starting to attract media attention, and NZ players such as and stamping their mark on the international scene, the time is right for a big push to get squash back into the national consciousness. We aim to make more use of the Microcourts in public, high foot traffic settings and really take squash to the people.

2016 World Junior Championships – Poland

This year was the turn of the NZ Junior Boys team to head to the World Junior Championships, held in Poland from 6-17 August. As is the custom, the individual World Junior Championships are held every year with the teams’ event alternating between the Boys and Girls on a bi-annual basis.

After a huge year preparing for the tournament, the NZ team featuring Auckland player Sam Sayes headed off with high hopes of improving on the 18th place achieved by the team in 2014. Fellow Auckland player Matthew Lucente was also named as the non-travelling reserve. After nearly two weeks of competition the team finished in an outstanding eighth place showing that there is plenty of promising talent coming through the junior ranks in our country that is up there with the best in the world. With the NZ Junior Girls team finishing sixth in their World Team Champs in 2015 the future is looking bright for NZ Squash.

Ellie Epke was the sole Junior Girl from New Zealand competing in the Junior World Champs, and had one of the best individual results in a long time finishing eighth overall. She had a great run through to the quarter-finals before coming across current world #4 and eventual winner Nouran Gohar of Egypt.
