Takaka, Motueka, Waimea, Nelson, Celtic, Marlborough, and Marlborough College clubs have for many years been part of the Wellington Squash district. Their inclusion in Canterbury means that we are now responsible for everything north of Ashburton. This opens up a wide range of new opportunities, and provides additional strength for our representative teams. Our challenge now is to ensure that we provide the services and support that the new clubs need, whilst continuing to meet the requirements of our traditional club base. Strategically, 2013 was an important year for Squash Canterbury. The reports we commissioned to examine our facilities and strategy highlighted a number of issues. One which has notable ramifications for us is that many of our clubs are only surviving financially by not accounting for depreciation. The inevitable long-term result of this, is that our facilities will not be maintained to the high standard that is needed to maintain our sport as an attractive activity for all ages. This reinforces something I talked about in my report last year—the need for us to stand back and look at the big picture, to ensure we continue to grow and develop. Progress is being made with respect to the rebuild/repair of our clubs. Sumner’s plans are progressing well, with an exciting 3-court complex planned, using moveable walls to give our district’s first 2 doubles courts. Rumour has it that the Richmond courts will be rebuilt, and Christchurch has recently received an insurance payout for the rebuild of their facility. The board continues to work towards new opportunities as part of the rebuild. Squash is now included in the initial plans for the Council-led Metro Sports Complex, and we are in discussions regarding possible development sites to replace the Christchurch Squash Club. We have also recently been successful in sourcing funding to upgrade several existing courts at the YMCA in Hereford Street, to provide better public facilities. Our biggest challenge as a sport continues to be increasing participation. Player numbers continue to gradually decline throughout the country, and unless we can reverse this trend, the long term viability of Squash is questionable. I therefore encourage all players to take a wide view, and consider what is best for our sport as a whole—setting aside individual concerns. Despite a number of years of strong performance, the one dark spot on 2013 is a significant financial loss. A number of factors contributed to this result, including a commitment by the board to undertake a strategic review of our direction. This incurred significant direct costs, plus indirect costs as a result of the lack of a stable staff base. Once again, a very big thank you to all of our volunteers. Sport cannot survive without you. Club presidents and committees, selectors, coaches, convenors, and referees, all deserve sincere thanks for their efforts. My special thanks to the board. In particular, I would like to acknowledge the outstanding contribution of Tony Harrison who is standing down this year. Tony has been a sounding board for me during his four years on the board, and has provided strength and guidance to me when I needed it most. To the rest of the board, Jeanette Beatty, Mary Turnbull, and Pat Barwick, thank you too for your contributions. I look forward to working with you all again this coming year. Thanks must also go to Paul Growcott, for standing in during a difficult transition during 2013. Paul never fails to give his all for our sport.
