It was with much sadness that we said our goodbyes to Kevin Wright in April, 2013. Kevin contributed so much to so many during his years with us. As a coach and a friend he is remembered with much fondness.

Strategic Plan comes to life with new website, College Sport and fun squash initiatives Tim Marshall, Chairman

Strategic Plan Progress Last year the Squash Auckland board signed off a new three year strategic plan for 2013-2015, which had been developed in consultation with member clubs and other stakeholders. This year general manager Philip Vodanovich and his team have actioned a number of the initiatives we set out in the plan and got the ball rolling on others. We are pleased with progress and looking forward to this continuing to build over the next two years.

To recap, the stated Vision is: Inspiring Aucklanders to play squash

And our stated Mission is: To engage with and enable clubs, commercial and community facilities to deliver a great squash experience to the Auckland community.

Strategic Plan 2013-2015 2013 Actions and Initiatives People and Participation • College Sport graded player initiative Providing flexible programmes, participation options and • KiwiSport introducing youngsters to squash pathways to develop people within the sport at all levels. • Fun Squash to bring new people into clubs Club Support and Best Practice Squash Auckland will support clubs to build capabilities • Club Tool Kit launched on website and develop and implement robust operational processes • Community Sports Village in Albany takes shape Communication Squash Auckland will engage with our stakeholders • New website design goes live ensuring that communication is timely, two way, open • Club Forums successfully kicked off and robust. • Annual 360 degree survey rolled out

Here’s more detail on each of these actions and initiatives: Fun Squash College Sport Fun Squash is a pilot programme to attract new people to squash This has been a major breakthrough working with College Sport – especially 20-40 year olds – where the sport needs to grow to get 800 Auckland school squash players on to the Squash our numbers. Squash New Zealand is using Squash Auckland’s work in this area as a Club Tool Kit model for other districts. Squash Auckland has long offered tools for clubs in areas such as seeking funding, managing volunteers and running the bar. With KiwiSport the new website this has been brought together and revamped Squash Auckland continues to receive generous funding support under the name Club Tool Kit. In the absence of sponsored team shirts, teams were assigned colours to play in. This made for extremely colourful evenings and some fantastic outfits throughout the season. After a hard-fought season the Aqua Awesomes, Babelicious Blue, Shocking Pink and Outrageous Orange found themselves in the semi-finals. Babelicious Blue and Shocking Pink progressed to the decider, which was won by Shocking Pink in a left handed tie-break (after the final was tied at two matches all).

Winners will be announced at the AGM on 13 November 2013.

Interclub has some challenges. For many of us as traffic conges- tion and busy lifestyles eat into our discretionary time. However it is pleasing to see that the competitive nature and social aspects of the sport are still strong factors in favour of our interclub format.

Club overall champions from a pennant perspective were Pa- pakura with 12 pennant wins which is an awesome result for the club, followed by Belmont Park and North Shore both with seven pennants.

The team were bottom seeds and lost their first match against the top seeds Whakatane going down 4/1. With steely determination they then proceeded to win their following pool matches and earned a playoff against Tauranga, the top qualifier of Pool B. The Remuera boys won the match and set up a rematch in the final against Whakatane. The average age of the Remuera team was 14 and throughout the competition they were competing against older, bigger and stronger boys. Having encountered them in the first round the Remuera boys knew what to expect and what followed was pure Superchamps finals play. At 2/2 it really was down to the wire. Cormac McMahon played a fantastic match to secure the win for Remuera 3/2.

Squash Auckland club members continue to embrace the on-line club referees qualification in increasing numbers. At the end of Insert pics Warkworth Helicopter beam 2103 September 2012 there were 120 Auckland club referees. At the end of September 2013 we have over 220 club referees. The next step in the process is to develop referees at a regional level and support progress to district referee certification.

To support this Auckland is lucky to have Terry Manuatu. Terry has continued to provide club rules night training on behalf of Squash Auckland. The feedback from clubs and participants in the rules nights has been fantastic. Terry has developed a great presentation which allows participants to learn in a fun environment and it is great to see the increasing level of participation in the rules night programme.

NZ Secondary Schools Championships Auckland’s Westlake Boys High School finished second in the New Zealand Secondary Schools Nationals held in Waikato from 16-18 August. The school came into the tournament seeded third but upset perennial rival Auckland Grammar School (second seeds) to enter the finals against defending champion Tauranga Boys High school. At the prizegiving, it was also announced that two players from Westlake Boys High School, Sion Wiggin and Rafa Yam, were picked by a panel of selectors from nearly 200 players to represent New Zealand to play against an Australian secondary schools team in Palmerston North at the end of the month.

Nomination by club The camps are run regionally in the Auckland area during the school holidays over a three days. We have now run two camps in South, Central and Northern Auckland.

The goals are to up skill the participants and provide a core training programme for ongoing training and development. To achieve this we have used the skills of our top coaches and also included past and current national players. Number one seed Campbell Grayson was forced to settle for second in a tightly contested final against Martin Knight (second seed) Martin won the first two games and was looking to finish the match however Campbell made a strong come back in the third game and was looking likely to take it to a fourth game but a couple of tough calls from the referees and a no let on match point ended his chances. Ian Gunthorp has managed the Auckland Masters Team for a number of years and we have been lucky to have Ian’s organisational skills to support the team. Ian has now stood down and we want to wish him all the very best for the future. We are still struggling with the news that Ian would prefer during 2014 to travel internationally than to accept the Squash Auckland offer of trip with the Auckland Masters team to the nationals in Palmerston North. Our sincere thanks to Ian for his contribution to Masters Squash in Auckland and we wish him well for the future.

National Junior Teams Event Managers Report – Mark Waldin, Mike Weston Auckland Juniors relax after winning the Junior National Teams Title It was an exciting and competitive battle in the boy’s event this and 4 National Age Group titles year as many of the teams had good depth and were very evenly matched – as the finals result showed. The Auckland team had Eastern (Hawkes Bay & Gisborne) first up and we drew 2-2 on matches, but with solid play from Henry and Zac to push their opponents to five games we took it on a count-back. Next up was Central which we won convincingly 3-1. Then for the last match of pool play (semi-final) we went down fighting to the now champs, Central, 1-3 with an outstanding 3-0 win by Sion over Luke Cooper and all other matches very competitive. The play-off for third and fourth against Northern was also 1-3 with a big five- set victory from Sion. Oliver had a close 1-3 that could have gone either way. End result – fourth place. The girls team which included three of the National Junior Women’s team members was too strong for any of the other district teams and dominated the event winning the final 4/0 against Wellington. For the eighth consecutive year retained the Rothmans Cup. They also completed the remarkable feat of not dropping a set during the competition. Thanks to all the players for giving their best every day and it was great to see the boys & girls teams supporting each other well! Also good mention to out fifth man Rafa Yam who was an outstanding team member – and we look forward to him competing next year.
