  • A Beautiful Dream MUSIC a New Way of Love SOCIAL CONNECT
Musicians don’t come more stellar, multi-faceted and gifted than Randy Hall, an ace guitarist, vocalist, composer, MUSIC arranger and performer. The Chicago-native has been a highly coveted musician for several decades and a chart- topping R&B star as well as a supporting player for an impressive, genre-defying resume of artists that began with The Staple Singers at age 15, The Dells, Ramsey Lewis, Roberta Flack, Diana Ross, Snoop Dogg, Dave Koz and - most definitively - the man who launched Hall as an international player with whom to be reckoned: the legendary Miles Davis. Now in 2020, after decades away from recording his own music, Randy Hall has made an astounding return with two runaway hit singles on the U.K charts. For a follow-up, Randy came back with another song entitled “A New Way of Love. It too flew to #1 on the international charts, prompting Randy to set his sights on the American market. A strategy to conquer America became even more of a necessity after another vault song he dusted off, “I Love What We Make Together,” became a key component of the 2019 Miles Davis project, Rubberband, that also shot up the A Beautiful Dream charts – this time on the jazz side. This was with Davis that Randy first sprang to international attention. First, Randy was a co-writer and player on the 1981 instrumental “Shout,” the first song to reintroduce Davis after 6 years away with a splashy funky flair. Then Randy was the lyricist and vocalist of the album’s mood-drenched title track, The Man with The Horn, a welcome back tribute to the legend that became a jazz and Quiet Storm radio classic.

  • Ballad Opera in England: Its Songs, Contributors, and Influence
BALLAD OPERA IN ENGLAND: ITS SONGS, CONTRIBUTORS, AND INFLUENCE Julie Bumpus A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF MUSIC August 7, 2010 Committee: Vincent Corrigan, Advisor Mary Natvig ii ABSTRACT Vincent Corrigan, Advisor The ballad opera was a popular genre of stage entertainment in England that flourished roughly from 1728 (beginning with John Gay's The Beggar's Opera) to 1760. Gay's original intention for the genre was to satirize not only the upper crust of British society, but also to mock the “excesses” of Italian opera, which had slowly been infiltrating the concert life of Britain. The Beggar's Opera and its successors were to be the answer to foreign opera on British soil: a truly nationalistic genre that essentially was a play (building on a long-standing tradition of English drama) with popular music interspersed throughout. My thesis explores the ways in which ballad operas were constructed, what meanings the songs may have held for playwrights and audiences, and what influence the genre had in England and abroad. The thesis begins with a general survey of the origins of ballad opera, covering theater music during the Commonwealth, Restoration theatre, the influence of Italian Opera in England, and The Beggar’s Opera. Next is a section on the playwrights and composers of ballad opera. The playwrights discussed are John Gay, Henry Fielding, and Colley Cibber. Purcell and Handel are used as examples of composers of source material and Mr. Seedo and Pepusch as composers and arrangers of ballad opera music.

THE LIRICHE DA CAMERA OF FRANCESCO SANTOLIQUIDO DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctorate of Musical Arts in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Abra K. Bush, M.M. ***** The Ohio State University 2003 Dissertation Committee: Approved by Dr. J. Robin Rice, Advisor Professor Eileen Davis ___________________________ Advisor Dr. Graeme Boone School of Music Graduate Program Copyright by Abra Kathleen Bush 2003 ii ABSTRACT Italian composer Francesco Santoliquido (b. 1883; d. 1971) wrote approximately twenty-six songs, or Liriche da camera, and numerous other compositions throughout the first three decades of the twentieth century. Santoliquido’s songs are worthy of study; they are full of lyricism and infused with elements of “Debussian,” “Straussian,” and Arabic influences. Santoliquido was born on August 6, 1883 in San Giorgio at Cremona, near Naples. He studied composition in Rome at Liceo di Santa Cecilia with Giacomo Setaccioli (b. 1868; d. 1925) and Stanislao Falchi (b. 1851; d. 1922). Four years after receiving his diploma in 1908, Santoliquido moved to Tunis, just as his career was beginning to gain momentum. He primarily resided in the village of Hammamet. In 1921, he returned to Italy, settling in Anacapri, where he remained until his death on August 26, 1971. Francesco Santoliquido composed music in a number of genres. In addition to his songs, Santoliquido’s musical output includes four operas, a mimmodramma (or ballet), several symphonies and orchestral suites, chamber music, and works for solo piano. Even with his limited popularity, Santoliquido’s music was performed during in his lifetime in cities from Zagreb to Manhattan.

  • Freda Payne Come Back to Me Love
FREDA PAYNE COME BACK TO ME LOVE As iconic in 2014 for her timeless beauty and stage appeal as she is for her artistic versatility, Freda Payne remains among music’s and show business’ brightest shining star survivors. Her latest album, Come Back To Me Love (her first for the Artistry Music imprint) marks not only a return to the big band and strings- laden classics from her mid-`60s beginnings with Impulse! but also marks a return to her hometown of Detroit. That makes this 14-song album featuring Grammy® award-winner Bill Cunliffe’s musical arrangements—from the vibes-kissed Kenny Rankin waltz “Haven’t We Met” to the lonely evening fireplace musings of “Lately”—a beautiful homecoming. “It’s a dream come true,” Payne enthuses with a smile, “Just like in 1968 when I was living in New York seeking my fame and fortune, and ran into Brian Holland of Holland-Dozier-Holland. He told me they had just left Motown and started their own company, Invictus. I flew back to Detroit, signed with them and a year later had a Top 5 record, ‘Band of Gold.’ So releasing this album on Mack Avenue’s Artistry Music imprint is truly serendipitous—a flashback to something really good happening for me at home in Detroit, my good luck charm.” Come Back To Me Love features six selections penned by Mack Avenue owner Gretchen Valade and co- writer Tom Robinson (including the title track as well as “You Don’t Know” and “I Should Have Told Him”) paired with eight selections of golden favorites such as the torchy “Guess I’ll Hang My Tears Out To Dry” and the blues boiler “I’d Rather Drink Muddy Water.” When asked whom she would like to work with on the project, she called upon a more recent associate of hers, Los Angeles-based pianist/arranger/producer Bill Cunliffe.
