A Beautiful Dream MUSIC a New Way of Love SOCIAL CONNECT Musicians don’t come more stellar, multi-faceted and gifted than Randy Hall, an ace guitarist, vocalist, composer, MUSIC arranger and performer. The Chicago-native has been a highly coveted musician for several decades and a chart- topping R&B star as well as a supporting player for an impressive, genre-defying resume of artists that began with The Staple Singers at age 15, The Dells, Ramsey Lewis, Roberta Flack, Diana Ross, Snoop Dogg, Dave Koz and - most definitively - the man who launched Hall as an international player with whom to be reckoned: the legendary Miles Davis. Now in 2020, after decades away from recording his own music, Randy Hall has made an astounding return with two runaway hit singles on the U.K charts. For a follow-up, Randy came back with another song entitled “A New Way of Love. It too flew to #1 on the international charts, prompting Randy to set his sights on the American market. A strategy to conquer America became even more of a necessity after another vault song he dusted off, “I Love What We Make Together,” became a key component of the 2019 Miles Davis project, Rubberband, that also shot up the A Beautiful Dream charts – this time on the jazz side. This was with Davis that Randy first sprang to international attention. First, Randy was a co-writer and player on the 1981 instrumental “Shout,” the first song to reintroduce Davis after 6 years away with a splashy funky flair. Then Randy was the lyricist and vocalist of the album’s mood-drenched title track, The Man with The Horn, a welcome back tribute to the legend that became a jazz and Quiet Storm radio classic. It was quite an accomplishment because Hall was only 21 when that album was released by corporate giant Columbia Records. The 2020 success of “I Love What We Make Together” (originally written with the late Al Jarreau as its intended singer), as well as additional Rubberband songs that feature Lalah Hathaway and Ledisi, all bring Randy back full circle to his roots. Right after his tremendous success with Miles Davis on the aforementioned The Man with The Horn, Randy was briefly a member of the highly respected Seattle launched funk-jazz band Pleasure for the album Give it Up (RCA – 1982) featuring the Top 30 single “Sending My Love.” A move to Los Angeles and connecting with Ray Parker Jr. resulted in Randy being signed to MCA Records for which he recorded two albums: I Belong To You (1984) which garnered the Top 20 R&B hit “I’ve Been Watching You (Jamie’s Girl)” followed by Love You Like a Stranger (1988) which contained the Top 40 single “Slow Starter.” A New Way Of Love SOCIAL CONNECT For Booking Contact: All rights reserved Randy Hall Music © Ranvera Records – Website https://randyhallmusic.homesteadcloud.com/ [email protected] .

    IMAGININGS OF AFRICA IN THE MUSIC OF MILES DAVIS BY RYAN S MCNULTY THESIS Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Music in Music with a concentration in Musicology in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2015 Urbana, Illinois Advisor: Associate Professor Gabriel Solis Abstract Throughout jazz’s history, many American jazz musicians have alluded to Africa using both musical and extramusical qualities. In musicological literature that has sought out ties between American jazz and Africa, such as Ingrid Monson’s Freedom Sounds (2007) and Robyn Kelly’s Africa Speaks, America Answers (2012), the primary interest has thus far been in such connections that occurred in the 1950s and early 1960s with the backdrop of the Civil Rights movement and the liberation of several African countries. Among the most frequently discussed musicians in this regard are Art Blakey, Max Roach, and Randy Weston. In this thesis, I investigate the African influence reflected in the music of Miles Davis, a musician scantly recognized in this area of jazz scholarship. Using Norman Weinstein’s concept of “imaginings,” I identify myriad ways in which Davis imagined Africa in terms of specific musical qualities as well as in his choice of musicians, instruments utilized, song and album titles, stage appearance, and album artwork. Additionally (and often alongside explicit references to Africa), Davis signified African-ness through musical qualities and instruments from throughout the African diaspora and Spain, a country whose historical ties to North Africa allowed Davis to imagine the European country as Africa.
