No. 13 DISCUSSION: The Walk of Fame Committee of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce has submitted a request for insertion into the Hollywood Walk ofFame the name of Holland Dozier Holland. The ceremony is scheduled for Friday, February 13, 2015 at 11:30 a.m. The communicant's request is in accordance with City Council action of October 18, 1978, under Council File No. 78-3949. Following the Council's action of approval, and upon proper application and payment of the required fee, an installation permit can be secured at 201 N. Figueroa Street 3rd Floor, Counter 23. These classics are only the tip of the iceberg, insofar as Holland-Dozier-Holland's 10-yearoutput at Motown is concerned. In their behind-the-scenes roles as staff producers and songwriters, Holland-Dozier-Holland were as responsible as any of the performers for Motown's spectacular success. Holland, Dozier and Holland were all born in Detro· · Brian Holland on February 15, 1941; Lamont Dozier on June 16, 1941, and Eddie Holland on October 30, 1939. Their relationship with Motown founder Berry Gordy Jr. (/inductees/berry_ gordy _jr/) dates back to 1958, before he started the label. Eddie Holland's 1958 Mercucy single, "You," was one of Gordy's earliest productions. Gordy also produced some sessions for Brian Holland, And in 1961, Lamont Dozier began recording for Anna Records, owned by Gordy's sister Gwen. Holland, Dozier and Holland inaugurated their collaboration in 1962, with the single "Dearest One," released under Dozier's name on the Mel-Q-Dy label, a Motown subsidiary. The formation of the team was the logical outcome of the assembly-line methods that characterized Motown. "Yes, it was a job, but we loved the job," Brian Holland said. 'We really did sit there and work all day at coming up with this song, that melody." In fact, the trio literally had to punch the clock when they arrived for work at nine o'dock each morning. Their workplace was a cinderblock recording studio in Motown's "Hitsville" offices. In short order, Holland-Dozier-Holland wrote and produced the first of many hits, Martha and the Vandellas' "Come and Get These Memories," which went to NmnberThree on the R&B chart and Number 29 on the pop chart in 1963. That same year, the trio also wrote and produced Marvin Gaye's "Can I Get a Witness," the Marvelettes' "Locking Up My Heart" and "Forever," the Miracles (/inductees/the-miracles/) '"I Gotta Dance to Keep from Crying" and "Mickey's Monkey," and Martha and the Vandellas' "Heat Wave" and "Quicksand." All of those songs preceded the trio's record-breaking success with the Supremes. The ePitomized the Motown sound: a fluid, uptempo style that combined catchy lyrics with the fervor of gospel, the groove ofR&B and the polish of pop. More than 50 of Motown's most memorable songs can be attributed to Holland-Dozier-Holland. They produced hits for nearly every act on the Motown family of labels. The, in 1967, H-D-H, as they were familiarly called, entered into a dispute with Berry Gordy Jr. over profit-sharing and royalties. Eddie Holland had the others stage a work slowdown, and by early 1968 the trio had left the label. The founded the Invictus/Hot Wax label, where they continued their hitmaking ways with Freda Payne ("Band of Gold''), Chairman of the Board ("Give Me Just a Little More Time") and the Honey Cones ('Want Ads''). The sound of those records- with the syncopated rhythm guitars and gospel-inflected vocal arrangements purveying catchy lyrics- was a distinctive as their Motown classics. After Invictus/Hot Wax folded in 1973, Dozier resuscitated his performing career, and the Hollands wrote and produced for a number of artists, including the Supremes and Michael Jackson (/inductees/michael­ jackson/) . In the Eighties, Dozier co-wrote hits with Phil Collins, Boy George and Mick Hucknall of Simply Red. In 1988, the Holland brothers founded the Holland Group production company and revived their label Music Merchant. Holland, Dozier and Holland are mentioned (along with the Four Tops and their vocalist Levi Stubbs, as well as Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong) in the lyrics of the song "Levi Stubbs' Tears" from the 1986 Billy Bragg album, Talking with the Taxman about Poetry; and also in the lyrics of The Magnetic Fields' song '"The Death of Ferdinand de Saussure," from their 1999 album, 69 Love Songs. For a "one-time-only reunion," the three composed the score for the musical production of The First Wives Club, based on the novel by Olivia Goldsmith and a later hit film. The musical included 22 new songs from the songwriting trio. Holland-Dozier-Holland have been inducted into the prestigious Songwriter's Hall of Fame and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, and received music industry awards that include, but are not limited to: 1. Eric Anderson, Ginny Sim La Sierra University, Riverside, California, USA [email protected] Abstract Around 92% of the US population dies from natural causes. However, only 49% of famous musician stars die from natural causes resulting in performance related careers being one of the most dangerous professions in the United States. According to this study, musicians were 20 times more likely to die from an addiction, four times more likely to die from an accident, six times more likely to die of homicide and four times more likely to die of suicide than the general population. Why do dangerous profession lists fail to include musicians in the high risk career list categories? It is not the profession that is dangerous, but primarily the personality type gravitating towards the profession that creates risk. Should certain personality types be directed to non-performance related careers? Probably not, since performing on stage may be a more effective intervention than psychiatric treatment. Throughout its 60-year existence, Motown Records made an impact on the world thanks to music genius and founder, Berry Gordy. It's important to note though, that the African- American owned label wouldn’t have reached so many monumental milestones without The Supremes, Martha Reeves & The Vandellas, Mary Wells, The Marvelettes, Tammi Terrell and Gladys Knight. The success of these talented women proved that women voices needed to be heard through radio airwaves everywhere. As a kid, you were probably singing melodies created by these women around the house with family members or even performing the songs in your school’s talent show, not even realizing how much of an impact these women made on Black culture and Black music. This is why it’s important to acknowledge these women during the celebration of the label’s 60th anniversary. The legendary reign of the Women of Motown began back in 1960, with then 17-year-old musical artist Mary Wells with her debut single, “Bye Bye Baby.” Wells, who wrote the song herself, helped Motown attain its first Top 10 R&B hit ever. Wells continued to make history with her chart-topping single, “My Guy” becoming Motown’s fourth No. 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 and the company’s first major U.K. single.

    2 He was a brilliant composer and record producer, one of the best to come out of Motown. He was born on May12th 1940 in Harlem, New York, and passed away on September 16th 2008 in Los Angeles, at the age of 68. He founded Whitfield Records in Los Angeles after his departure from Motown Records. He was known as the father of the “Psychedelic Funk” sound. Longer songs, a heavy bass line, distorted guitars, multi-tracked drums and inventive vocal arrangements became the trademarks of Norman’s production output, mainly with The Temptations. According to Dave Laing (Journalist for the Guardian Newspaper; Thursday 18th September 2008) stated that Norman Whitfield’s first actual job at Motown Records was as a member of staff for which he got paid $15 a week to lend a critical ear to new recordings by Motown staff, a job he said "consisted of being totally honest about what records you were listening to". He graded the tracks for Gordy's monthly staff meeting, where decisions were made on which should be released. Soon dissatisfied with quality control, Whitfield fought to be allowed to create records himself. This involved competing with such established figures as Smokey Robinson, but he got his first 3 opportunities in 1964 with lesser Motown The Temptations’ songs, during the first ten groups, co-writing and producing “Needle years of the label’s operation. Such songs as in a Haystack” by the Velvelettes and “Too “Just My Imagination (Running Away with Many Fish in the Sea” by the Marvelettes.
