Overview of Activities, April, 2005-March, 2006 This annual report covers MSRI projects and activities that have been concluded since the submission of the last report in May, 2005. This includes the Spring, 2005 semester programs, the 2005 summer graduate workshops, the Fall, 2005 programs and the January and February workshops of Spring, 2006. This report does not contain fiscal or demographic data. Those data will be submitted in the Fall, 2006 final report covering the completed fiscal 2006 year, based on audited financial reports. General News The CSIRO-ANZIAM Student Support Scheme for attendance at the ANZIAM and special interest group conferences The CSIRO/ANZIAM Student Support Scheme (SSS) is designed to provide fund- ing to support conference travel and registration for students studying at univer- sities in Australia and New Zealand, who wish to attend the ANZIAM conference or meetings of the special interest groups. These are, specifically, the Maths in Industry Study Group (MISG), the CTAC conference of the Computational Math- ematics Group, the EMAC conference of the Engineering Mathematics Group and the Mathsport conference of the Mathematics and Computers in Sport Group. The scheme will be funded by the annual sponsorship that has been provided to ANZIAM by CSIRO, together with any supplementary funding that the ANZIAM Executive may wish to vote. More details and the application form can be found at http://www.anziam.org.au/The+CSIRO-ANZIAM+Student+Support+Scheme. This scheme is particularly relevant to three upcoming conferences: • EMAC 2009, http://www.maths.adelaide.edu.au/emac2009/; • ANZIAM 2010, http://www.math.canterbury.ac.nz/ANZIAM/; • MISG 2010, http://www.rmit.edu.au/maths/misg. The objectives of the SSS are: • To help students attend conferences relevant to their interests; • To emphasize the importance of students giving presentations about their work; • To provide a first step educating students in ways of obtaining funding to help their research efforts. In order to be eligible for funding, students will be required to present a talk at the conference. It is expected that students will have discussed their plans with their supervisors, and supervisor endorsement of applications is required. -

Australian Mathematical Society Awards
22 Australian Mathematical Society awards The George Szekeres Medal is awarded by the Australian Mathematical Society in even-numbered years to a member (or at most two members) of the Society for an outstanding contribution to the mathematical sciences in the 15 years prior to the year of the award. George Szekeres Medal winners for 2012 are Professor Ross Street FAA, FAustMS and Professor Neil Trudinger FAA, FRS, FAustMS. The Australian Mathematical Society Medal is awarded annually to a member (or members) of the Society under the age of 40 years for distinguished research in the mathematical sciences. A significant portion of the research work should have been carried out in Australia. Australian Mathematics Society Medal winners for 2012 are Associate Professor Anthony Henderson and Dr Stephen Keith. These awards were announced on 24 September 2012, at the opening ceremony of the Society’s Annual Meeting in Ballarat. Three of the medals were presented at the ceremony, followed by short talks from the recipients. Stephen Keith’s was awarded in absentia. Their citations follow. Ross Street Ross Street is an outstanding mathematician, who has done much to promote the subject in this country: both by his actions within Australia to foster mathematics and mathematicians, and by his high profile internationally, which has helped to promote Australian mathematics to the world. AustralianMathematicalSocietyawards 23 Street has been a member of the Australian Mathematical Society since 1970, and a Fellow since 1995. He served two terms on the Council of the Society, and spent many years as an editor of the Journal and the Bulletin. -
