The barge is believed to have sunk in a flood event, by the first century after Christ. It was built of oak- and pine-wood, and carried a cargo of construction stones from Saint-Gabriel quarry, upriver near Tarascon. The shipwreck has conserved its galley gear with the glazed ceramic, and one dolium reused as a brasero for cooking as well as other tools. To ease its recovery, the wreck was cut into ten sections. After restoration it will be exhibited, from the fall of 2013, at the Arles Museum. Recently many remains from Roman times have been recovered from the bottom of the Rhône river. RAAF’s 90th Birthday The Royal Australian Air Force marked its 90th birthday with an annual commemorative service in Canberra and the addition of Battle Honours to the RAAF Memorial while there was a display of historic planes at the service's birthplace in Victoria. The Chief of Air Force, Air Marshal Mark Binskin AO used his address as an opportunity to re- member those that gave their lives in service to Australia over the last 90 years. The RAAF was formed on March 31, 1921, with Point Cook its sole base. "We have aeroplanes that date back to the 1930s," Air Commodore Ron Luke said at Point Cook. "When you look at the difference in technology between those aircraft and what we're operating today with Super Hornets and C-17 transports, it's really quite amazing”. The general public gathered to see the Roulette acrobat team perform and more than 60 aeroplanes, including Spitfires and Mustangs and Hudson bombers, 1930s vintage airliners, DC- 3s, plus an assortment of other aero- planes. While this was happening F/A-18 jets Air Marshal Mark Binskin AO lays a wreath at flew over Canberra, as people gathered the Canberra Ceremony at Anzac Parade to mark the anniver- sary. More squadrons have been formally added to the RAAF memorial, recognising those who served in the Philippines in 1944, the Malayan Peninsular and Ubon Thailand in the 1960s, and more recently East Timor and Iraq. Retired RAAF Squadron Leader Denis Macneall said he has fond memo- ries as a member of 75 Squadron in Malaysia. -

It spans seventeen critical years in T which public funding was contracting, student grants were diminishing, instructions from the government and the University Grants Commission were multiplying, and universities feared for their reputation in the public eye. It provides a frank account of the University’s struggle against these difficulties and its efforts to prove the value of university education to society and the economy. This volume describes and analyses not only academic developments and changes in the structure and finances of the University, but the opinions and social and political lives of the staff and their students as well. It also examines the controversies of the 1970s and 1980s over such issues as feminism, free speech, ethical investment, academic freedom and the quest for efficient management. The author draws on official records, staff and student newspapers, and personal interviews with people who experienced the University in very 1973–90 different ways. With its wide range of academic interests and large student population, the University of Manchester was the biggest unitary university in the country, and its history illustrates the problems faced by almost all British universities. The book will appeal to past and present staff of the University and its alumni, and to anyone interested in the debates surrounding higher with MicheleAbendstern Brian Pullan education in the late twentieth century. Goals and missions of the Center Theoretical sciences are undoubtedly the foundation of sciences and technology of our daily life. In fact, it is generally believed that theoretical science will play more and more important role in the next few decades. Cultivating young generation with solid training of fundamental sciences and fostering frontier academic research in theoretical sciences are thus essential to further development of our society. Therefore, in 1997, National Center for Theoretical Sciences (NCTS) was established by National Science Council. Since its establishment, NCTS has completely changed the mathematical society. The achievement of NCTS during the past 18 years was remarkable. It is generally believed that NCTS is the key factor for the great improvement of the mathematical research in Taiwan. NCTS has set its objective to promote researches of theoretical sciences in Taiwan. The aim consists of the following specific aspects: a. Fostering world class outstanding researchers, and attract top young researchers to do cutting edge research in NCTS; b. Attracting worldwide outstanding theoretical scientists to do research in Taiwan; c. Developing international and inter-disciplinary scientific research program; d. Promoting international cooperation and collaborations, aiming to become a leading research institution in Asia and in the world. -

General News The CSIRO-ANZIAM Student Support Scheme for attendance at the ANZIAM and special interest group conferences The CSIRO/ANZIAM Student Support Scheme (SSS) is designed to provide fund- ing to support conference travel and registration for students studying at univer- sities in Australia and New Zealand, who wish to attend the ANZIAM conference or meetings of the special interest groups. These are, specifically, the Maths in Industry Study Group (MISG), the CTAC conference of the Computational Math- ematics Group, the EMAC conference of the Engineering Mathematics Group and the Mathsport conference of the Mathematics and Computers in Sport Group. The scheme will be funded by the annual sponsorship that has been provided to ANZIAM by CSIRO, together with any supplementary funding that the ANZIAM Executive may wish to vote. More details and the application form can be found at http://www.anziam.org.au/The+CSIRO-ANZIAM+Student+Support+Scheme. This scheme is particularly relevant to three upcoming conferences: • EMAC 2009, http://www.maths.adelaide.edu.au/emac2009/; • ANZIAM 2010, http://www.math.canterbury.ac.nz/ANZIAM/; • MISG 2010, http://www.rmit.edu.au/maths/misg. The objectives of the SSS are: • To help students attend conferences relevant to their interests; • To emphasize the importance of students giving presentations about their work; • To provide a first step educating students in ways of obtaining funding to help their research efforts. In order to be eligible for funding, students will be required to present a talk at the conference. It is expected that students will have discussed their plans with their supervisors, and supervisor endorsement of applications is required. -

1 The Australian Mathematical Society (Inc) Reports for the sixtieth Annual General Meeting and the one-hundred-and-twenty-first Council Meeting 2016 President's Report Secretary's Report Treasurer's Report Audited Financial Statements Editors' Reports ANZIAM Report ANZAMP Report Page 1 of 53 2 AustMS President’s Report Annual Meeting 2016 There have been many changes in the Australian higher educational sector this year, including the new research impact and engagement assessment, the ACOLA review and the new research training program (RTP), all which reinforce the government’s innovation and industry engagement agenda. The ACOLA review of Australia’s research training system has been released and the report makes recommendations regarding industry involvement in HDR training and the value of industry placements. In particular it states that every candidate who wishes to undertake an industry placement should be encouraged to do so. The Mathematical Sciences are well placed in this endeavor due to the soon to be expanded ASMI Intern and also the Mathematics in Industry Study Group. However the scale of placements under the expanded AMSI Intern is 1000 by 2020 (not all in the mathematical sciences, of course) and hence challenging to implement. For example, HDR supervisors may need to develop new industry relationships and links in order to offer suitable placements to their students. The new RTP guidelines also state that universities must report on industry experiences of their HDR students. ACEMS/AMSI recently held a one day workshop on measuring research engagement and impact in the mathematical sciences. Peter Taylor (UMel) chaired the event and the speakers were Leanne Harvey (ARC), Kerrie Mengersen (QUT), Geoff Prince (AMSI), Jacqui Ramagge (USyd) and myself. -

Vladimir Ejov September 23, 2016 The 59th Australian Mathematical Society hosted by the School of Computer Science, Engineering and Mathematics and Statistics of Flinders University, from Monday September 28 to October, 1, 2015. Thirteen plenary speakers in 2015 - nine international and 4 from Australia- are internationally renowned in their respective fields, including two Fields medalists. Plenary speakers represented a cross-section of mathematics across the world today. Four plenary speakers in 2015 were women. The plenary speakers were Martino Bardi (University of Padova), Manjul Bhargava (Princeton), Aurore Delaigle (Uni- versity of Melbourne), James Demmel (University of California, Berkeley), Jerzy Filar (Flinders University), Clement Hongler (EPFL Switzerland), Frances Kirwan (University of Oxford), Frances Kuo (University of New South Wales), Michael Shelley (New York University), Terence Tao (University of Californiq, Los Ange- les), Ruth Williams (University of California, San Diego), Konstantin Zarembo (Nordic Institute for Theoretical Physics), Wadim Zudilin (Newcastle). There were 362 registered mathematicians registered for a four-day program cov- ering a wide range of topics in pure and applied mathematics and statistics. There were 20 special sessions comprising 282 presentations including 13 keynote speakers. The special session organisers worked hard and e↵ectively as they created a high quality meeting.
