Box 299, St. Louis, Missouri 63166-0299, USA ABSTRACf. A checklist of the 24 genera and 364 native species ofBromeliaceae known from Venezuela is presented, including their occurrence by state and indications of which are endemic to the country. A comparison of the number of genera and species known from Mesoamerica (southern Mexico to Panama), Colombia, Venezuela, the Guianas (Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana), Ecuador, and Peru is presented, as well as a summary of the number of species and endemic species in each Venezuelan state. RESUMEN. Se presenta un listado de los 24 generos y 364 especies nativas de Bromeliaceae que se conocen de Venezuela, junto con sus distribuciones por estado y una indicaci6n cuales son endemicas a Venezuela. Se presenta tambien una comparaci6n del numero de los generos y especies de Mesoamerica (sur de Mexico a Panama), Colombia, Venezuela, las Guayanas (Guyana, Suriname, Guyana Francesa), Ecuador, y Peru, y un resumen del numero de especies y numero de especies endemicas de cada estado de Venezuela. Abstract An updated inventory of the Bromeliaceae for Costa Rica is presented including citations of representa- tive specimens for each species. The family comprises 18 genera and 198 species in Costa Rica, 32 spe- cies being endemic to the country. Additional 36 species are endemic to Costa Rica and Panama. Only 4 of the 8 bromeliad subfamilies occur in Costa Rica, with a strong predominance of Tillandsioideae (7 genera/150 spp.; 75.7% of all bromeliad species in Costa Rica). -
Catalogue of the Vascular Epiphytic Flora of Uruguay
Acta Botanica Brasilica doi: 10.1590/0102-33062019abb0059 Catalogue of the vascular epiphytic flora of Uruguay Patricia Mai1* , Andrés Rossado2 , José Mauricio Bonifacino2,3 and Jorge Luiz Waechter4 Received: February 21, 2019 Accepted: June 17, 2019 . ABSTRACT We provide an updated list of the vascular epiphytic flora occurring in native environments of Uruguay based on literature review, herbarium specimens, and fieldwork throughout the country. The catalogue provides standardized information for each species, including accepted name, synonyms used within Uruguay, epiphytic category, distribution within the country, habitat, conservation status, observations, and a voucher citation. The effort documented 73 species for the epiphytic flora of Uruguay (3 % of the flora), distributed among 29 genera and 12 families. Bromeliaceae was the richest family (17), followed by Polypodiaceae (16) and Orchidaceae (12). Tillandsia stood out as the most speciose genus with 15 species. Characteristic holoepiphytes was the most diverse ecological category. More than half of the epiphytic species documented for Uruguay (53 %) reach their southernmost geographic distribution in the country, whereas only two mostly epipetric species of Tillandsia — T. arequitae and T. uruguayensis — are endemic to the country. Almost half of the epiphytic species found are presently under categories of threat of extinction, with 60 % of them occurring in national protected areas. Both the richest epiphytic families and the predominance of characteristic holoepiphytes coincide with findings from floristic and ecological studies previously carried out in humid subtropical regions. Tupac Amaru 210 Lima 25 Perú Resumen Con la finalidad de evaluar la contaminación en la ciudad de Lima Metropolitana se realizó un monitoreo ambiental utilizando los biomonitores: liquen Usnea sp y Tillandsia capillaris. Las muestras fueron recogidas de una zona no contaminada y expuestas por tres meses en diferentes distritos de la ciudad, luego fueron recogidas, preparadas y analizadas utilizando la técnica de activación neutrónica. Los resultados obtenidos mostraron contaminación significativa en algunas Zonas de la ciudad procedente de la actividad industrial y de las emisiones vehiculares. Abstract In order to evaluate pollution in the city of Lima, Perú, an environmental monitoring was carried out using two species of bioindicators: lichen Usnea sp and Tillandsia capillaris. Both samples were taken from an uncontaminated area to be exposed during three months in different sampling sites of the city. Then samples were collected, prepared and analyzed by instrumental neutron activation analysis. Results showed important contamination in East and North Zone of the city coming from industrial activities and vehicular emissions. -

The program material is made available by the Bromeliad Society International to affiliated societies from their Media Library. You will note the meeting will not be on our regular first-Tuesday-of-the-month night but one night later, on a Wednesday. This is done to accommodate Ray’s schedule and availability. Specific details on how to join the Zoom meeting will be provided in an email to members. MEETING HIGHLIGHTS The meeting last month was conducted via Zoom on Wednesday, March 3, 2021, and members of the Sarasota Bromeliad Society joined us. The speaker was Guillermo Rivera with a talk titled Bromeliads from Central Brazil: A Journey through the States of Minas Gerais and Bahia. His presentation drew on information and experiences he gathered from botanical tours he has led in Brazil as owner/operator of Plant Expeditions, a botanical touring company. His tour destinations have included South America, Mexico, South Africa, Madagascar, and Namibia, with emphasis on bromeliads, orchids, cacti, and other succulents. His trips also incorporate cultural features of the areas visited. Guillermo Rivera In his presentation Guillermo took us on a ‘visual tour’, a 2,600-mile journey first through the state of Minas Gerais, then north into the state of Bahia, both located in central- southeastern Brazil (pictures below). -

This paper describes the anatomy of the floral scape for 12 species of Bromeliaceae, belonging to the subfamilies Bromelioideae, Tillandsioideae and Pitcairnioideae. Although all the scapes have a similar organization, there are variations in the structure of the epidermis, cortex and vascular cylinder. Such variations are described for the studied scapes and, when considered together they can help to identify the species. These aspects are described for each scape and discussed under a taxonomic point of view. Key words - anatomy, Bromeliaceae, floral scape RESUMO – (Anatomia do escapo floral de Bromeliaceae). Este trabalho descreve a anatomia do escapo floral de doze espécies de Bromeliaceae pertencentes às subfamílias Bromelioideae, Tillandsioideae e Pitcairnioideae e tem como objetivo ampliar o conhecimento anatômico da família e desse órgão em particular. Embora todos os escapos apresentem uma organização similar, observam-se variações na estrutura da epiderme, do córtex e do cilindro vascular. Tais variações são descritas para os escapos estudados e, quando são analisadas em conjunto, podem auxiliar na identificação das espécies. Esses aspectos são descritos para cada um dos escapos e discutidos dentro de um contexto taxonômico.
