TUESDAY, AUGUST 24, 2021 ROB MASIELLO ON HIGHS TURF PARADISE RACE DATES APPROVED, BUT DOUBTS REMAIN OVER MEET AND LOWS OF RACING by Dan Ross In a special meeting Monday morning, the Arizona Racing Commission formally approved the proposed 2021-2022 race dates for Turf Paradise--Nov. 5 through May 7--but hard practical questions remain over what participation at that meet could look like due to an ongoing standoff between the Arizona horsemen and Turf Paradise management. As a result of welfare concerns springing from a 2020-2021 Turf Paradise race meet marred by a high number of equine fatalities, the Arizona Horsemen=s Benevolent and Protective Association (AZHBPA) have stated they will not sign any meet contract until a list of track safety upgrades and other facility management-related requests have been satisfied. Contracts and Bonuses in the Sport of Kings – New Evidence on Jockeys’ Pay and Performance David Butler, Department of Economics, University College Cork, Ireland Robert Butler, Department of Economics, University College Cork, Ireland* Robert Simmons, Lancaster University, United Kingdom * Corresponding author. Email [email protected] Telephone +353 21 490 2434. ABSTRACT A considerable body of evidence exists to show that performance-related pay schemes can raise worker productivity with much of this increase due to worker sorting. However, variations in the power of performance-related pay contracts are rarely observed. The thoroughbred horse racing industry offers such an opportunity. Elite jockeys are paid an annual salary (retainer) as well as receiving a riding fee and share of prize money earned in races. Contrary to earlier research, we find no evidence of worker shirking when the power of incentive contracts is reduced through switching into retainer contract. We find a positive relationship between jockey pay and performance in this industry, with jockeys delivering greater prize money for owners and themselves. Moreover, retainer contracts result in legacy effects with superior performance continuing for elite jockeys even after their retainer agreements have expired. We argue this is due to a reduction in monitoring costs and enhanced opportunities for previously retained jockeys to ride successfully for large-scale racehorse owners. This all points to successful selection and monitoring by horse race owners, their executives and trainers. Our results are significant for employers and employees working under performance-related pay schemes. Word Count: 8,594 Keywords: Contracts, incentives, horse racing. She was making her 2009 seasonal and turf debut in the Classic and won in very fine style. She defeated red hot favourite RAINBOW VIEW into fifth place. She was always prominent and drew away in the final furlong to win the fillies mile by a length and a half. Her rivals, dual Group 3 winner CUIS GHAIRE took second spot from Group 3 Fred Darling Stakes winner SUPER SLEUTH. GHANAATI proved this win was no fluke when she lined up as favourite for a very hot contest in the G1 Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot in June. She took on a host of supreme fillies including French Guineas winner ELUSIVE WAVE, Irish Guineas first and second AGAIN and LAHALEEB, Derrinstown 1000 Guineas Trial winner BALIYANA to name a few. She showed her sheer class and determination as she ran out the clear winner of her second G1 contest to beat the smart French trained filly REGGANE by two lengths, with RAINBOW VIEW staying on for third spot. She put in such a scintillation display of speed that she managed to beat the track record for a mile!
