Derrinstown Digestdigest Quarterly Newsletter July 2009 derrinstownderrinstown digestdigest ALHAARTH BAHRI ELNADIM INTIKHAB HAATEF MARJU TAMAYUZ GHANAATI shines in G1 Coronation completing Royal Ascot four timer for Shadwell When the Barry Hills trained homebred, GHANAATI sprang a 20/1 surprise win in the 1000 Guineas at Newmar- ket in May, we knew we had something special. She was making her 2009 seasonal and turf debut in the Classic and won in very fine style. She defeated red hot favourite RAINBOW VIEW into fifth place. She was always prominent and drew away in the final furlong to win the fillies mile by a length and a half. Her rivals, dual Group 3 winner CUIS GHAIRE took second spot from Group 3 Fred Darling Stakes winner SUPER SLEUTH. GHANAATI proved this win was no fluke when she lined up as favourite for a very hot contest in the G1 Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot in June. She took on a host of supreme fillies including French Guineas winner ELUSIVE WAVE, Irish Guineas first and second AGAIN and LAHALEEB, Derrinstown 1000 Guineas Trial winner BALIYANA to name a few. She showed her sheer class and determination as she ran out the clear winner of her second G1 contest to beat the smart French trained filly REGGANE by two lengths, with RAINBOW VIEW staying on for third spot. She put in such a scintillation display of speed that she managed to beat the track record for a mile! GHANAATI is the seventh foal of SARAYIR, who also has a yearling filly by Forestry and has a filly foal by Hard Spun. She is safely in foal to Medaglia D’Oro, sire of the super star race filly Rachel Alexandra. SARAYIR is a dual Listed winner herself and by Mr. Prospector out of the fantastic HEIGHT OF FASHION. This family is steeped in Champions such as NASHWAN, UNFUWAIN, NAYEF, ALWASMI, MUKDDAAM etc. HABAAYIB GHANAATI OUQBA The 2009 Ascot Festival proved a very successful one for Shadwell racing overall, with four winners in total at the Royal meeting. OUQBA kicked off on the first day of Royal Ascot when he took the G3 Jersey Stakes a race won for the second year in a row by Shadwell Racing. OUQBA redeemed himself here after a disappointing run in the 2000 Guineas and defeated the useful DEPOSER by half a length. OUQBA may now be aimed at Goodwood for the Sussex Stakes along with GHANAATI. continued on page 3 HEAVEN for MARJU with VIVA PATACA VIVA PATACA put himself firmly back into the limelight when winning the G1 Citi Champions & Chater Cup, the final leg of the Citi Hong Kong Triple Crown, for the third time at Sha Tin Racecourse at the end of May. This makes this outstanding son of MARJU successful in no less than SEVEN GROUP 1 events to date with earnings in excess of €7 million and is only just short of equalling the highest earnings record of €7.5 million in Hong Kong. He battled bravely after encountering traffic problems at the top of the straight and was forced in toward the rail by rival Thumbs Up but still went on to score by a neck. MARJU’s son won this race in 2006 and 2007 and was beaten by half a length in last years renewal. He had already won the second leg of the triple crown in February, and earned his owner Stanley Ho Hung Sun an additional €200,000 bonus for securing the second leg of the series on Sunday. A delighted trainer John Moore stated after the race “The fact that he keeps winning these big races has to be recognized”. The plan with Viva Pataca now is to take him to Australia for the Cox Plate in October. Stakes performers by MARJU in 2009 include ENROLLER who won the G3 Dubai Tennis Championship Stakes at Newbury while REMARQUE won the Premio Le Moss in Rome in April and continued on from that success by winning the G3 Premio Tudini also at the same track in May. SPIRIT OF SPORT, another son of MARJU, won the Listed Premio Botticelli and also rep- resenting MARJU is ASSET, he won the Listed Totesport.com Leicestershire Stakes. Meanwhile CHINCHON was second in the G2 Grand Prix De Chantilly. Group 1 Audemars Piguet QEII 2007 Citi Hong Kong Gold Cup 2008 Group 1 Citi Champions & Chater Cup 2009 VIVA PATACA ALSO CROWNED HORSE OF THE YEAR AT HONG KONG JOCKEY CLUB CHAMPION AWARDS 2008/9 Marju’s VIVA PATACA was finally crowned the Hong Kong Jockey Club Horse of the Year Award for the 2008/9 season, a prize he so richly deserved. As stated above, he has now won seven Group 1 races and amassed €7 million in prize money. He was denied this honour two years ago despite beating his rival, Vengeance Of Rain on two occasions. VIVA PATACA also collected the Champion Middle-Distance and Champion Stayer Awards. He has now won the Champion Middle-Distance Award on three occasions and the Champion Stayer Award on two occasions, an outstanding achievement by any means. His owner Stanley Ho was there to receive the awards. VIVA PATACA’s half sister OPERA COMICA has a colt foal by Marju and was scanned successfully in foal to Marju in April of this year. GLORIOUS SUNSHINE….FANTASTIC RACING….GREAT VENUE…. WHAT MORE COULD YOU ASK FOR !!! Although the attendance figures were down on previous years, the Gods were cer- tainly looking down on us at Leopardstown on Sunday 10th May as we again basked in the glorious sunshine for a great days racing. VIVA PATACA Derrinstown were yet again proud to be sponsoring at Leopardstown on this fine day in May where we saw odds on favourite FAME AND GLORY annihilate the field in the G2 Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial Stakes. This son of Montjeu set- tled in mid field, where he later moved through the field in the straight to take charge from the leader, Fergus McIver at the furlong pole. He quickened on clear of second placed MOURAYAN (Alhaarth) to win by five lengths while FERGUS MCIVER held on for third. FAME AND GLORY subsequently went FAME AND GLORY off as favourite for the English Derby and finished second to English 2000 Guineas heroine, Sea The Stars, who became the first horse since Shadwell’s NASHWAN in 1989 to complete the Guineas/Derby/Eclipse treble. FAME AND GLORY then went on to be successful in the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby when beating sta- blemate Golden Sword by five lengths with Alhaarth’s MOURAYAN taking third spot. In the fillies contest, the G3 Derrinstown Stud 1000 Guineas Trial, it was owner/ breeder HH the Aga Khan who took the honours with the John Oxx trained BALIYANA. This winning daughter of Dalakhani made all and quickened into a decisive lead with a furlong to go. She won by an easy two and a half lengths with AARONESS taking the runner up spot with FIREY RED taking third position. BALIYANA Continued from front page…. APPRENTICE SERIES HOTTING UP! WEDNESDAY, 11 SEPTEMBER 2019 SMULLEN: HUMBLED BY FIRST ,50,000 SALE BENCHMARKS AUCTION'S PROGRESS by Chris McGrath RACING=S SUPPORT ASCOT, UK--Which would you rather have: the colt who topped the opening session at Keeneland the previous day, or all 127 animals who found a new home at Ascot yesterday? You could have corralled the whole herd of them for less. But the beauty with Thoroughbreds, of course, is that each and every individual that changed hands at the Tattersalls Ascot Yearling Sale--for an aggregate ,1,356,850, up 24% in only the third year of the auction--retains the right to prove their relative valuation all wrong, once broken and sent in training. After all, that's exactly what happened with several graduates of last year's sale. Besides the four fillies who have won listed races, they also included a ,28,000 colt beaten just a neck in the G2 Norfolk S. over the road at the Royal meeting; and, one of the fairytales of the season, the ,3,000 filly Bettys Hope (GB) (Anjaal {GB}), who completed a hat-trick for Rod Millman when scooping a ,122,925 pot in the Weatherbys Super Sprint at Newbury in July. TUESDAY, AUGUST 24, 2021 ROB MASIELLO ON HIGHS TURF PARADISE RACE DATES APPROVED, BUT DOUBTS REMAIN OVER MEET AND LOWS OF RACING by Dan Ross In a special meeting Monday morning, the Arizona Racing Commission formally approved the proposed 2021-2022 race dates for Turf Paradise--Nov. 5 through May 7--but hard practical questions remain over what participation at that meet could look like due to an ongoing standoff between the Arizona horsemen and Turf Paradise management. As a result of welfare concerns springing from a 2020-2021 Turf Paradise race meet marred by a high number of equine fatalities, the Arizona Horsemen=s Benevolent and Protective Association (AZHBPA) have stated they will not sign any meet contract until a list of track safety upgrades and other facility management-related requests have been satisfied.
