Quarterly Newsletter July 2009 derrinstownderrinstown digestdigest ALHAARTH BAHRI ELNADIM INTIKHAB HAATEF MARJU TAMAYUZ GHANAATI shines in G1 Coronation completing Royal Ascot four timer for Shadwell When the Barry Hills trained homebred, GHANAATI sprang a 20/1 surprise win in the 1000 Guineas at Newmar- ket in May, we knew we had something special. She was making her 2009 seasonal and turf debut in the Classic and won in very fine style. She defeated red hot favourite RAINBOW VIEW into fifth place. She was always prominent and drew away in the final furlong to win the fillies mile by a length and a half. Her rivals, dual Group 3 winner CUIS GHAIRE took second spot from Group 3 Fred Darling Stakes winner SUPER SLEUTH. GHANAATI proved this win was no fluke when she lined up as favourite for a very hot contest in the G1 Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot in June. She took on a host of supreme fillies including French Guineas winner ELUSIVE WAVE, Irish Guineas first and second AGAIN and LAHALEEB, Derrinstown 1000 Guineas Trial winner BALIYANA to name a few. She showed her sheer class and determination as she ran out the clear winner of her second G1 contest to beat the smart French trained filly REGGANE by two lengths, with RAINBOW VIEW staying on for third spot. She put in such a scintillation display of speed that she managed to beat the track record for a mile! GHANAATI is the seventh foal of SARAYIR, who also has a yearling filly by Forestry and has a filly foal by Hard Spun. -

MONDAY, APRIL 27, 2020 TOM'S SHOWING WHERE ARKANSAS DERBY SPLITS; BOTH DIVISIONS TO CARRY FULL KY DERBY POINTS CREDIT LAY FOR BLAME Having attracted 22 entries Sunday for next Saturday=s GI Arkansas Derby, Oaklawn Park has split the race for sophomores into two divisions for the first time ever. Each race will carry a $500,000 purse--the Arkansas Derby was originally scheduled to be held Apr. 11 and worth $750,000. ABecause of our national crisis, we and the entire world of sports are in uncharted waters requiring unprecedented actions,@ said Oaklawn President Louis Cella. AWe=re trying to make the best of a very, very difficult situation. On the one hand, it is the worst of times to be racing without fans in our grandstand. On the other, we have a large number of exceptional 3-year-olds wanting to run in our Arkansas Derby. Oxford-Born Blacker Hits Milestone
MONDAY, 22 FEBRUARY 2021 OXFORD-BORN BLACKER 'PHAROAH' FULFILLS GROUP 1 PROMISE IN FEBRUARY S. by Heather Anderson HITS MILESTONE CafJ Pharoah delivered a first win at the highest level on dirt for his sire, U.S. Horse of the Year and Triple Crown winner American Pharoah, in the G1 February S. going a mile over the Tokyo dirt on Sunday. His three-quarter length victory guaranteed him a spot in the starting gate in the GI Longines Breeders' Cup Classic this fall. Favoured at 2-1, the 4-year-old entire settled in a tracking fifth, as Wide Pharoah (Jpn) (Henny Hughes) and Air Almas (Majestic Warrior) slugged it out on the front end. He emerged a clearcut third as noses pointed for home, and swung out to make his challenge 400 metres from the wire. Conservatively handled to that point by jockey Christophe Lemaire, a trio of right-handed taps kept the Koichi Nishikawa colourbearer's mind on business with a furlong to travel as he passed Air Almas, and he held safe the late rush of 27-1 shot Air Spinel (Jpn) (King Kamehameha {Jpn}) to win with ears pricked. A series of monitors was scrutinized before and during the race, and after it, the stewards, having granularly assessed the running, called two jock- eys before them to query their rides. Accountability has primacy in the Hong Kong Jockey Club, the massive, sprawling entity that administers racing in Hong Kong – every bit of racing, from the bedding in the horses’ stalls to the massive betting pools on HKJC races. The riders brought before the stewards (immediately, not several days hence for a morning of casual film viewing, as is generally done in Amer- ica) had done nothing overtly wrong, but if a horse so much as varies its established running style, both trainer and jockey are liable to be asked to explain the why and the how. -

In that time, a host of Hong Kong racing’s equine greats have carried off the Cup and today the contest is an international Group 1 race worth HK$10 million. The victory roll features standouts such as River Verdon, Indigenous, Bullish Luck, Vengeance Of Rain, Viva Pataca, Ambitious Dragon, Military Attack and Designs On Rome. Notable among the race’s early winners are Silver Lining, Co-Tack, Gay Eighties and Yuno When, but the distinction of being the first ever Hong Kong Gold Cup winner will forever belong to Observatory, trained by Allan Chan and ridden by the great Pat Eddery, who took the spoils on 14 January, 1979.
