Mick Darcy is a much valued, senior member of the Derrinstown team. He Staff Profile is head gardener at Ballygoran Stud where he started work over 34 years ago. His duties include the upkeep of the delightful walled garden at Mick darcy Ballygoran. Here he produces an array of fresh vegetables and fruit. Mick also cares for the fabulous lawns and flower beds surrounding Ballygoran house. A gentleman at heart, Mick is known for his good humour and his love for his work shows in his dedication to the job.

Mick originally worked for Tommy and Betty Hayden when they purchased Ballygoran in 1971 and thereafter, their son Patrick Hayden when he took over the farm. Previous owners of Ballygoran include Major Kelly, father of top-consignor Kilcarn Stud’s Miss Pat O’Kelly, Raymond Guest and the Gallagher family. Famous stallions that stood at Ballygoran include , Larkspur, Royal and Regal, Rarity and Nebbiolo.

Ballygoran Stud was purchased in 1988 by Sheikh Hamdan and is one of Shadwell Estate’s world famous nurseries. Whilst under the ownership of Shadwell, Ballygoran has been associated with the rearing of the European Champion 2yo Alhaarth, winner Almutawakel, 1000 Guineas winner Lahan, 2000 Guineas & Champion Stakes winner Haafhd and winner Muhtathir.
