Erin Brockovich Consumer Advocate & president of Brockovich Research & Consulting Author, Superman’s Not Coming: Our National Water Crisis and What We The People Can Do About It Erin has been in the trenches, joining communities and teaching them how to fight against seemingly insurmountable odds for almost 30 years. Her name and personal story became an Oscar-winning movie and then it became a verb. To “Erin Brockovich something” has become synonymous with investigating and then advocating for a cause without giving up. Her work continues today with hundreds of communities throughout the U.S. and the world. Known for her work in Hinkley, California, she helped expose a toxic chromium-6 groundwater contamination at a PG&E’s facility, and how this chemical affected the health of the people there. In 1996, her work on the largest direct action lawsuit of its kind, resulted in the utility giant paying out the largest toxic tort injury settlement in U.S. history at that time: $333 million in damages to more than 600 Hinkley residents. She has testified before Congress on water issues, toxic chemicals, and environmental health issues. Erin is the executive producer of Rebel, a new drama starring Katey Sagal and created by Krista Vernoff inspired by her current life coming to ABC’s Thursday lineup in April 2021. She holds an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from Loyola Marymount University and a Doctor of Laws from Lewis and Clark Law School. She’s won the “Consumer Advocate of the Year” award from Consumer Attorneys of California and received the “Julius B. Richmond Award” from The Harvard School of Public Health. “Brockovich shows how bad things are, but she never gives in or despairs. Caitlin: That's really flattering. Thank you. You've written a new book that I just finished reading. It's called Superman's Not Coming: Our National Water Crisis and What We the People Can Do about It. First of all, congratulations on a fantastic book. Erin: Thank you. I hope you enjoyed it. Caitlin: I really did. When I first got it, I thought wow this is pretty long, but it's worth every page because it's one of the best explainers on water quality that I've read. You break down the laws, the standards, major water quality issues facing the country and throughout the entire book, you're weaving in really moving stories of people who decide to take a stand for clean water in their communities and beyond.

Joy Feeney Topics in Political Economy Professor David Ruccio December 17, 2008 The Economic Cost of Prevention Modern economic theory seems to disregard many practices necessary for the implementation of such theory. The 2000 hit movie Erin Brockovich tells the story of the missing pieces of economic theory throughout the battle of the underdog. The movie itself begs the question what is the truth? Truths are hard to come by and with a malfunctioning economic system, even more of a challenge. Brockovich depicts two sides of the economic argument, each showing and disproving economic practices left in and out of the current system. Brockovich utilizes the juxtaposition of the good-guy-bad-guy story in order to shed light on themes of corporate greed, virtuous values, and the strength of numbers in unity. Throughout the film, these themes are tried and tested, creating an alternative economic story to the current economic perspective thrust upon the film and society. Based on the true story of Erin Brockovich-Ellis, the film targets utility bigwig Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) based in San Francisco, California for lying to residents of Hinckley California about unhealthy amounts of hexavalent chromium in groundwater. The chromium was used to prevent corrosion in water towers on the Hinckley campus of PG&E since the 1950s. The chromium-laced wastewater was then released to unlined retention ponds that infiltrated the ground water of residents in the Hinckley area. This hexavalent chromium, also known as chromium 6, is known to cause medical problems such as uterine cancer, spinal deterioration, and Hodgkin’s disease.

Erin Brockovich Dir: Steven Soderbergh, USA, 2000 A review by Matthew Nelson, University of Wisconsin- Madison, USA When a film opens with the title "based on a true story," a sinking feeling of gloom comes over me. Will this be yet another typical triumph over adversity, human-interest flick, cranked out by the Hollywood machine to force-feed an increasingly lazy mass audience interested only in star power and happy endings? The lack of original story lines and plot conventions has turned the American motion picture industry into a creator of shallow popular interest films bested in their absurdity and lack of depth only by made-for-TV movies. While it has been said that our greatest stories come from real life, the griminess of the modern world rarely fits into the tightly regulated limitations surrounding mainstream American screenwriting. Details that do not fit within the formula of a marketable "true story" film, which must attempt to appeal to a large audience base of diverse people, are edited out in favor of more pleasing elements, such as a love story, gripping court room confession, or death bed recovery. With this admittedly jaded viewpoint, I went into Erin Brockovich hoping for the best (a rather vacant, feel-good movie, forgotten before I had pulled out of the multi-plex parking garage), but expected far worse. To my pleasant surprise, it turned out to be neither. Director Steven Soderbergh (of Sex, Lies and Videotape fame) manages to pull off an amazingly interesting film, with snappy writing, fine casting, and plenty of that feel good energy, that does not fall into sugary sentimentalism.

TRIAL AND SETTLEMENT Hexavalent chromium (also known as "Chrome 6" or "Chrome VI") is dangerous. This sign, positioned near PG&E's Hinkley compressor station, warns people that the "waste water" (containing hexavalent chromium) "in use" is dangerous. No such warning sign was in place before groundwater remediation, at the Hinkley site, began. Image online via the LA Times. Many people and domestic animals in the high desert town of Hinkley, California were getting sick. Some had died. Since residents depended on the local groundwater supply for all their needs, were the illnesses somehow related to PG&E's Gas Compressor Station located nearby? On December 7, 1987 officials from the company advised the State of California they had detected levels of hexavalent chromium (chrome 6) in a groundwater monitoring well north of the compressor station's waste water ponds. The levels were ten times greater than the maximum amount allowed by law. Known as a cancer-causing chemical since the 1920s, chrome 6 is especially dangerous to lungs. Since many of the Hinkley residents were reporting respiratory problems, a link to chrome 6 contamination seemed possible. After PG&E reported the pollution to the government, company officials started a program to buy every piece of property in the community thought to be affected by the pollution.

In 1963, Chrome Crankshaft Inc. began operating a chrome-plating facility adjacent to two schools and residential homes in Bell Gardens, California. Twenty-two students and six teachers were diagnosed with cancer over a subsequent eight-year period. A number of teachers also reported miscarriages. The victims filed personal injury lawsuits against Chrome Crankshaft and J&S Chrome Plating Co. In January 1999, Communities for a Better Environment, a California environmental group, also filed suit. In exchange for dismissal of both cases, Chrome Crankshaft settled both lawsuits for an undisclosed amount. The company agreed to discontinue the chrome-plating portion of its operations and to contribute $25,000 to an environmental awareness organization. These types of lawsuits are civil lawsuits. Civil lawsuits are not about a crime. The government does not arrest or place a person in jail. In a civil lawsuit, one person, or party, makes a claim against another. A person in this case can be an actual person or a company. A party may file a civil lawsuit when somebody injures or harms them. In the movie, “Erin Brockovich,” the main character, Erin Brockovich, helped over 600 people file a civil lawsuit against a company. The movie is based on a real story and was released in 2000. Julia Roberts played the role of Erin Brockovich. Erin Brockovich was a single mother of three children. She lived in a small town in the desert in southern California. Over time, Brockovich discovered that Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) was dumping poisonous chemicals around the town. The chemicals entered the town’s water supply and made hundreds of people sick. Brockovich collected more than 600 people to file a claim against PG&E. The group of over 600 people asked for two types of damages: compensatory damages and punitive damages. The compensatory damages paid the people who were injured by the pollution. The money covered medical bills and money that they lost when they could not go to work. The compensatory damages also covered the sick peoples’ pain and suffering. The punitive damages were awarded to punish PG&E for improperly dumping poisonous chemicals.
