VIRGINIA SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA: WINTER DREAMS Ferguson Center for the Arts November 30; 8 p.m. “Winter is coming….” in the season with the VSO in a program that pays homage to winter featuring Glazunov’s picturesque Winter from The Seasons. Acclaimed cellist Julian Schwarz returns with Tchaikovsky’s delightful Rococo Variations. The VSO then takes a trip north to Finland for Sibelius’ evocative Fifth Symphony. MARITIME CONNECTIONS- EDWARD HUNGERFORD: A EUROPEAN TRAVELOGUE The Mariners’ Museum and Park December 1; 2:30 p.m. Join Curator of Photography Sarah Scruggs on a journey to several European cities in the 1920s and 1930s, through the photography of Edward B. Hungerford. Over the course of his lifetime, Hungerford traveled extensively throughout the United States and Europe and found ways to spin these adventures off into publications. Every year, Hungerford traveled more than 75,000 miles by train just for the fun of it, according to one piece of personal correspondence referenced by the Watertown Daily Times. Hungerford eventually calculated that over the years he had ridden more than 1.5 million miles on rails, according to the same piece. Hungerford wrote for the Saturday Evening Post and Harper’s Magazine and published many commercially successful books. His photographic collection includes cities and waterways in the United States, Canada, and several European countries. NATURAL WREATH-MAKING WORKSHOPS Endview Plantation December 1; 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Participate in an interactive workshop on making seasonal grapevine wreaths using nature’s bounty. STAR OF WONDER: MYSTERY OF THE CHRISTMAS STAR Virginia Living Museum December 2; 1:30 p.m. Since 1965, we have journeyed in the footsteps of the Magi, seeking the identity of a mysterious star which foretold the coming of a king. Over the years, the scientific thinking has changed, archaeology has revealed new clues about the lands in which these events took place, and our understanding of who the Magi might have actually been has grown. A BRIEF HISTORY OF VIRGINIA RAILROADS 1884 Warwick Courthouse December 5; 7 p.m. Presented by John DeMayo and Calvin Boyes, Old Dominion Chapter of the NHRS Based out of the Hull Street Station in Richmond, this nonprofit organization has pursued a similar path as the LHTSF to restore a building and a variety of rolling stock, create an impressive railroad heritage center and operate it with volunteers. In addition to their overview of the state’s rail legacy, they will bring a collection of vintage railroad telegraphy equipment to demonstrate telegraph operations of yore. ANSWERING AMERICA’S CALL: NEWPORT NEWS IN WORLD WAR I The Mariners’ Museum and Park Continuing through December 31 This exhibition will feature artifacts, photographs, and documents relating to the camps located here in Newport News (Camp Hill, Camp Stuart, and Camp Alexander) as well as the critically important Animal Embarkation Depot and its counterpart in Saint-Nazaire, France. Stories will be told about how the community supported the war effort through Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company and numerous civilian agencies. 26TH ANNUAL CELEBRATION IN LIGHTS Newport News Park Continuing through January 1st; 5:30 - 10 p.m. New Gingerbread House Display and Falling Snow on Special Nights! Celebration in Lights, Virginia’s first drive-through holiday light event, opens for its 26th season on Thanksgiving night (November 22, 2018). Newport News Park will be transformed by over a million individual lights, creating animated holiday and fanciful scenes. For its 26th year, the event will add special effects snow that will fall on the cars as they drive into the Winter Wonderland area on special nights.
