Kanaka Bar Employment Services Ltd.

Hi Everyone and Welcome March 2020….

With the days getting warmer it is a good time to get out and start some Spring Cleaning. Springtime is the best time to clean your yards. The weather isn’t too cold and it isn’t too hot out yet. With no leaves on the shrubs and tree’s yet you can see what has been hiding. Spring cleaning is a good practice for Fire Smart principles as well.

As the weather is warming up remember it is wood tick season. I have seen that people have been getting wood ticks already. Please take the proper precautions when out in the bush.

If you have any dead vehicles in your yard that you would like hauled away, please contact us. We ask that you please have your registration papers with the vehicle, and have it signed over to KBES. The metal recyclers will not take vehicles without these papers. This is how they ensure the vehicle wasn’t stolen or anything before they recycle it.

WOW!! is all I can say about the rain storms we had. This just goes to show that Mother Nature is unpredictable. With the Spring thaw still coming around the corner. Please be ready for delays on highways and please keep your eye out for flooding on our roads as well. Be safe out there everyone.

Thank-You Don VanderGriend for putting cones and safety tape up around the wash out area to warn us.

Fuel Management has gone swimmingly. We have completed our final Polygon 2AC & 3A-1. Final inspections should be happening soon.

Our Fuel Management crews have done amazing jobs this year. It sure opens up the forests after they are done their prescriptions.

Thank-You to the crews this year. Another year done and, in the books, 

Paperwork has been submitted for our Fire Smart Recognition, now we wait to hear if it gets approved!!

KANAKA LAND AND HOLDINGS LTD.

Hello upper and lower Kanaka, with Spring around the corner, here is a food for thought. Sometimes you need to step outside, clear your head and remind yourself of who you are and where you want to be. And sometimes you must venture outside your world in order to find yourself, however if you have allergies, don’t forget your Claritin!

We at KLH would like to thank you for your never- ending support, with paying your rent, expressing your concerns, from minor to major repairs. Especially for letting us into your homes with the recent chimney cleaning and filter changes.

Planter boxes in front of multiplex have been provided for tenants to plant food or flowers. Friendly reminder it is not for garbage, an ashtray nor is it a kitty litter box. We kindly ask you to be respectful and clean them up. This is for all tenants, community members and for all visitors.

A friendly reminder that rent is due on or before the 1st of every month. We have an alternate payment option. If you prefer e-transfers please send to: [email protected] the question could be simple such as “ Where do you work”? password would be “Kanaka” please state in the memo that it is for rent.

A big thank you for putting your recyclables in a bag before putting into the big blue bins very much appreciated. If you have any ideas on how or what we can improve on, please contact, Carnation, Pauline Christine or AJ @ 250.455.2200

If you have any questions or concerns about your home, please do not hesitate to contact Christine or AJ at the band office @250.455.2200

Kanaka Bar February Newsletter – Climate and Water Update

Climate change presents one of the greatest challenges of our time. Kanaka Bar membership have shared observed changes in weather patterns, the availability and distribution of traditional foods and other impacts to land, water, plants and animals. In response to these changes, Kanaka completed a climate change vulnerability assessment and adaptation plan in 2018. Over the last two years Kanaka has implemented many of the recommended adaptation strategies including continued progress on energy self-sufficiency, food self- sufficiency and implementation of site-specific environmental monitoring. Did you know that Kanaka has been collecting streamflow data for Morneylun Creek and Nekliptum Creek for over two years now? With this data we now have an understanding of the amount of water available in our creeks throughout each of the seasons. We can also track trends in the amount of water from year to year to determine the impacts of climate change. We want to know if we will have more, less or the same water over time so we can ensure our community continues to have a reliable source of drinking water for generations to come. Did you know that Kanaka has three weather stations with real-time data that you can access on our website? The weather stations were installed in 2019 and are located at Lot 4, Highway #1 and the Band Office. We no longer need to rely on Lytton for our weather data which we know does not accurately represent the conditions in Kanaka Bar. Each station measures temperature, precipitation and wind direction and speed. The table below shows the temperature for the hottest day of the year in 2019 and the coldest day of the year so for in 2020. Lot 4 reached 38 °C on August 7th! On September 19th, it rained 50 mm in one day at the Band Office!
