This study was carried out, through a total of 271 scuba dives, from 2017 to the beginning of 2020 in four sites located along the Ionian coasts of Sicily: Catania, Aci Trezza, Santa Maria La Scala and Santa Tecla. Through a photographic data collection, 95 taxa, representing 17.27% of all Mediterranean marine Heterobranchia, were reported. The order with the highest number of found species was that of Nudibranchia. Among the study areas, Catania, Santa Maria La Scala and Santa Tecla had not a remarkable difference in the number of species, while Aci Trezza had the lowest number of species. Moreover, among the 95 taxa, four species considered rare and six non-indigenous species have been recorded. Since the presence of a high diversity of sea slugs in a relatively small area, the central-eastern coast of Sicily could be considered a zone of high biodiversity for the marine Heterobranchia fauna. Several authors have studied the marine Heterobranchia (Mollusca, Gastropoda) fauna composition living in the Ionian Sea, but to date further knowledge regarding this interesting group of mollusks is still needed. Recent studies have corroborated the peculiarity of the Mediterranean Sea showing high levels of endemism and cryptic diversity. On the other hand, marine sea slugs have been revealed to be important indicators of the marine ecosystem’s health, due to their species-specific diet that consist of a vast variety of sessile and benthic invertebrates. A baseline study of the marine Heterobranchia diversity is therefore a necessary step to reveal the hidden diversity and to monitor the possible presence of alien species. The present study shows results from approximately 600 scientific dives carried out during a nine-year period in all of the main submarine habitats of the studied area, while accounting for the marine Heterobranchia from both the Ionian and Adriatic Seas.

For each species those references about presence in the islands have been included. A total of 245 species are reported for the Archipelago, of these 23 are new record and 20 taxa yet being studied.

  • Marine Molluscs from Cyprus: New Data and Checklist Bilal Öztürk, Giovanni Buzzurro & H
Bollettino Malacologico, Roma, 39 (5-8): 49-78, [2003] 2004- Società Italiana di Malacologia Marine molluscs from Cyprus: new data and checklist Bilal Öztürk, Giovanni Buzzurro & H. Avni Benli KEY WORDS: Mollusca, Recent, Checklist, Cyprus, Mediterranean Sea. ABSTRACT This study has been carried out along the North Cypriot coasts on May 10th-19th 1997 and July 12th-21st 1998. As a result of the sampling in the shore region and in deep- water, depths ranging from 0 to 600 m, 304 species, for a total number of 4786 individuals, included in the classes of Polyplacophora, Gastropoda, Bivalvia and Scaphopoda have been identified. Among the 304 taxa examined, 18 species from Cyprus Island are here reported for the first time. In particular, 16 Gastropoda: Nodilittorina (Echinolittori- na) punctata (Gmelin, 1791), Rissoa splendida Eichwald, 1830, Alvania fractospira Oberling, 1970, Alvania testae (Aradas & Maggiore, 1844), Hydrobia acuta (Draparnaud, 1805), Protatlanta souleyeti (Smith E. A., 1888), Cerithiopsis scalaris Locard, 1892, ex Monterosato ms., Nassarius circumcictus (Adams A., 1852), Granulina boucheti Gofas, 1992, Gymno- bela subaraneosa (Dautzenberg & Fischer H., 1896), Teretia teres (Reeve, 1844), Chrysallida juliae (de Folin, 1872), Folinella ghisottii Aartsen, 1984, Tragula fenestrata (Jeffreys, 1848), Eulimella bogii Aartsen, 1994, Turbonilla acutissima Monterosato, 1884, and 2 Bivalvia: Limaria loscombi (Sowerby G. B. I, 1823), Kelliella abyssicola (Forbes, 1844). Fur- thermore, six species are reported for the Eastern basin for the first time. All the species reported for the first time from Cyprus in this paper are figured and discussed. A total amount of 696 species is here reported in a newly formed checklist of Molluscs of Cyprus, considering all the previous works concerned about the malacological fauna occurring in the area under investigation and the additional species we have identified.

  • BASTERIA, 221-240, a Preliminary Opisthobranchia
BASTERIA, 62: 221-240, 1998 A preliminary check-list of Opisthobranchia (Mollusca, Gastropoda) from the Maltese Islands Carmel+R. Sammut 216/1 St. Joseph Fits., Rue d'Argens, Gzira GZR04, Malta & Antonio+S. Perrone Via Palermo 7, 73014 Gallipoli (LE), Italia A check-list of the molluscs recorded from the Islands date is opisthobranch Maltese to presented; 163 species are reported of which 78 are new records. The orders Cephalaspidea, Anaspidea, Notaspidea, Acochlidiacea, Sacoglossa (=Ascoglossa), and Nudibranchia are data distribution represented. Some on are given. Key words: Gastropoda, Opisthobranchia, check-list, Malta, Mediterranean. INTRODUCTION The Maltese archipelago consists of a group of small islands located in the central Mediterranean(latitude: 35°48'28" to 36°05'00"N; longitude: 14°H'04" to 14°34'37"E). 2 The total surface area is 315.8 km and only the three largest islands (Malta, Gozo and inhabited. The islands lie submarine Comino) are on a platform separating the Western and Eastern basins in the Mediterranean. The archipelago is 96 km South of Sicily and 290 km North of Africa. The maximum depth to the North is less than 200 m and 80 m. The South/South-West is 1700 averages area deeper, descending rapidly to over in the Malta but the m trough (Marchant, 1971), deepest region lies several kilometers in an East/North-East direction. Interest in the Maltese malacofauna has focused been mainly on the terrestrial molluscs, because of the isolation of the Maltese islands and the of number probably presence a of endemic forms (see Giusti, Manganelli & Schembri, 1995).
