Roman coins and military equipment are the result of a battle between Romans and Germans, probably the Varus Battle (A.D. 9). It is the aim of our research project to reconstruct the course of the battle. It has become apparent that one cannot deduct the intensity of fi ghting by the number of fi nds. Instead, we have to take into account the impact of post-battle processes on the archaeological record, such as rescuing of wounded soldiers, looting by the victors and body-stripping. This paper illustrates the fi nds and features from Kalkriese, especially from the main site «Oberesch», where most of the Roman artefacts as well as a rampart built by Germans as an ambush against Roman troops, and a series of pits containing the bones of the dead Roman soldiers were found. In addition, new methodo- logical approaches for the interpretation of ancient battlefi elds are presented. A temporary exhibition was shown at three sites related to the events of 9AD to shed some light on the cultural background of the combatants involved; the conflict between the Roman Empire and Germanic tribes, culminating in this battle and further bellicose encounters, and the later reception of the historic events which led to the creation of a German national myth. The historical context ´Quintili Vare, legiones redde’1 (Qunitilius Varus, give the legions back.) is said to have been the exclamation of the first princeps Augustus, ruler of the powerful Roman Empire, as he learned of the loss of three legions in Germania.2 These, numbering together with the accompanying auxiliary troops approximately 20.000 soldiers, were probably on the way to their winter camps close to the Rhine River, returning from an area that had recently been occupied by the Romans.3 The commander in charge was Publius Quintilius Varus, an experienced governor and administrator, linked by marriage and friendship to the imperial family.

The painted shield comes from excavations at Dura-Europos, after the preliminary field reports from 1933-34 and 1934-35, published in 1939.
