  • PNCS Celebrates St. Piran's Day at March Meeting Cornwall Celebrates
Volume 7 Number 3 SUMMER 2005 PNCS celebrates St. Piran’s Day at March Meeting Picture Yowann Byghan, our resident Cornish bard, as a game show host. That’s the role he played as members of the Pacific Northwest Cornish Society stretched their brains at the annual St. Piran’s Day celebration May 7 in Chehalis. Yowann used a quiz format to teach the group about the life of St. Piran. This was followed by singing and Yowann’s reading of his original poetry. Our resident bard is hoping to move to England or, better yet, Cornwall, so times may be limited when he shares his breadth of knowledge of Cornish language and culture with PNCS. Bill and Jan Marshall, who had found PNCS on the Web, came for the first time. Pat and Rob Harper, guests of Fran Anderson, and Dewey Hunt, son of Fern Hunt, also were first-timers. President Dick Colenso, Fran Anderson, and Alene Reaugh agreed to form the nominating committee and present a slate of officers at the July 23 meeting. Alene spread the Cornish Country Store over two tables, with brand new editions of the Pasty Book a swift seller. Laura Wolford, daughter of member Doug Wolford, has agreed to create a banner using symbols from the PNCS logo. Cornwall celebrates St. Piran’s Day The Cornish anthem ‘Trelawny’ rang out over the dunes of Perranporth this month, as thousands of people showed their Cornish pride on St. Piran’s Day. Wearing the Cornish tartan and carrying the black and white flag, they made their way across the sands to the accompaniment of pipes and drums.

Signature: …………………………………….. 1 Abstract. Employing Cornish Cultures for Community Resilience. Can cultural distinctiveness be used to strengthen community bonds, boost morale and equip and motivate people socially and economically? Using the witness of people in Cornwall and comparative experiences, this discussion combines a review of how cultures are commodified and portrayed with reflections on well-being and ‘emotional prosperity’.1 Cornwall is a relatively poor European region with a cultural identity that inspires an established ethno-cultural movement and is the symbolic basis of community awareness and aspiration, as well as the subject of contested identities and representations. At the heart of this is an array of cultures that is identified as Cornish, including a distinct post-industrial inheritance, the Cornish Language and Celtic Revivalism. Cultural difference has long been a resource for cultural industries and tourism and discussion of using culture for regeneration has accordingly concentrated almost exclusively on these sectors but an emergent ‘regional distinctiveness agenda’ is beginning to present Cornish cultures as an asset for use in branding and marketing other sectors.

EVER CHANGING CHEESES From left to right: Luna (EG312), St Ella (EG314), Brillat Savarin a la Truffe (FC430), Highmoor (EC929), So many cheeses, so little time. Trying to keep up with what’s happening in the English Pecorino (EE178), Roche Montagne (FC637), dairy sector is an impossible task, which is why it is so much fun. New cheeses Divine (EC154), Trufflyn (EG276), Cropwell Bishop Stilton Baby (EB097) are constantly being created, old ones are reinvented and the milk they are made from never stays the same, changing from season to season and even 3rd Edition 3rd Design & Art Direction by Allies Design Studio between batches. It’s an endlessly fascinating and delicious topic, but it can also be confusing. That’s why we’ve put together this guide to our very best cheeses, the artisan producers that make them and their amazing stories. This is our attempt to bring a little order to the unruly world of cheese.

  • Chapter 9 Reflective Practice and Oral Folk Tradition
Link to thesis website Chapter 9: Reflective practice and oral folk tradition Chapter 9: Reflective practice and oral folk tradition: quarrying the Celtic Imaginary? Chapters 7 and 8 identify physical and social locations where folk traditions are popularly accepted as having taken place since time immemorial, sometimes with continuity and sometimes with interruptions and revivals. Chapter 9 moves on to consider locations where the performance of a tradition is subject to greater reflection and perhaps more creativity. It is argued that these add to, rather than detract from, the process of folk tradition. Here, the folk process takes place in a second existence, according to Hoerburger’s model where it is consciously revived, or cultivated by a given group of people.1 The group of people considered here are the Celto-Cornish movement, who have a shared sense of the Celtic imaginary in relation to folk tradition and a discursivity, which distinguishes between the English and the Cornish. Although the extent to which any “imaginary” is shared, must vary from individual to individual here it is taken that there will be a common element around Cornwall’s oppositional identity to England. Deacon shows that by the last decade of the twentieth century this movement had “fused its Celticity with the classical industrial Cornish identity. In doing so, notions of Cornishness as incompatible with Englishness took firmer root. These now feed off an appropriately more oppositional new nativist Cornish history…”.2 Thus, for the Celto-Cornish movement, icons of nineteenth century Cornishness such as bal maidens, fish jowsters, gooks and tea treats (see appendix 5 : Glossary) all became part of the Celtic imaginary and symbols of Cornish distinctiveness.

Camra 2017 76pg.indd 1 09/10/2017 15:50 Camra 2017 76pg.indd 2 09/10/2017 15:50 WELCOME TO FALMOUTH Many thanks for joining us at this year’s CAMRA Kernow Falmouth Beer Festi- val. Every year we try and generate some new interest and interaction with our local beers , ciders and breweries. Hopefully you will find some interesting new beers amongst some old favourites. Some even coming straight from the wood! Thursday sees the return of the Presentation Night. Join the local brewery teams as we unveil the winning beers of the festival. Keep your eye out for the champion beers from both this festival alongside some national winners. On Friday and Saturday we are introducing tutored tasting sessions. These are designed to give you further knowledge of the beers and ciders you’re drinking and to share the history of some of our local breweries. We’re supporting Falmouth RNLI this year; please do help us to collect the monies required to maintain the facilities to save lives for years to come. Finally a huge thanks….. to all of our volunteer festival team, to our sponsors and supporters, to all the brewers and cider makers and to you; without whom it would not be possible to host this fantastic beer festival Please do drink responsibly and enjoy yourselves, Cheers, The Festival Committee Camra 2017 76pg.indd 3 09/10/2017 15:50 40 YEARS OF CAMPAIGNING A Year to Remember Since Friday 18th March 1977 at the New Inn, St Columb Major, the Cornwall branch of the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) has been promoting great real ale and cider.
