Although their home base is in London, only one member of the Quartet, Martin Lovett, is a native Englishman. His colleagues, Norbert Brainin, Siegmund Nissel, and Peter Schidlof, are Austrian-born and received their early training in Vienna. To escape the oppressive Nazi regime, the families moved to England in 1938. In spite of such parallel events, they did not meet until 1941 when all four boys, employed in various war factories, were pursuing their music studies under Max Rostal. Thus began the association which led to the iormation of a permanent quartet, with their first public appearance in 1948. -

Mai 1933, vor 8000 Jahren, haben die Nazis mit der Erstürmung der Gewerkschaftshäuser die legitime Vertre- tung der deutschen Arbeitnehmerschaft brutal zerschlagen. Sie haben Gewerkschaftsfunktionäre eingekerkert, gefoltert und ermordet. Nur drei Monate, nachdem die Macht in Deutschland an die Nationalsozialisten ausgeliefert worden war, gehörten damit Gewerkschaften und ihre Repräsen- tanten ebenso wie demokratische Parteien und Politiker zu den ersten Opfern des Naziterrors. Die Hans-Böckler-Stiftung bietet mit der Ausstellung „… gerade Dich, Arbeiter, wollen wir“. – Nationalsozialis- mus und freie Gewerkschaften im Mai 1933 – allen Interes- sierten die Möglichkeit, sich mit dieser Geschichte zu befassen. Steigbügelhalter der Nazis waren Parteien, Politiker und nicht zuletzt Wirtschaftsführer, die damit bleibende Schuld auf sich geladen haben. Es gehört zur Tragik unserer Geschichte, dass auch Gewerkschaftsfunktionäre anfangs geglaubt hatten, sie könnten mit den Nazis zum Wohl der Arbeiterschaft zusammenarbeiten. Noch der 1. Mai 1933 wurde gemeinsam mit den Nazis begangen. Am 2. Mai kam für alle das böse Erwachen mit der Erstürmung ihrer Gewerkschaftshäuser. Zielstrebig und gründlich zerschlug das NS-Regime die Arbeiterbewegung. -

Although the official commemoration ceremonies were held in camera, the anti-fascist pub- lic could not be deterred from celebrating 8 and 9 May 2020 in an appropriate public form. In many European countries there were social initiatives for public commemoration actions. They show that the memory of the world historical victory of the anti-Hitler coalition and the women and men who gave their lives, health and freedom for it remains alive. In a video message on Facebook the General Secretary of FIR explained: “This year we must celebrate the days of liberation, the day of victory virtually, in our minds, our hearts. Never- theless it is certain that our common conviction makes it possible to lead the world into a peaceful and solidary future - anti-fascism remains our task today and tomorrow”. We received reports about worthy commemoration ceremonies, but most of them had to take place in small scale, from Austria, Belgium, France, Greece, Israel and Spain. We are sure that in many other European coun- tries and beyond, this date was commemorated in an appropriate form. Thus in Hungary in Budapest on 8 May at the anti-fascist memorial - initiated by the federation of the resistance fighters and anti-fascists MEASZ - was remembered. -
