We can’t wait to meet you! P A G E 2 Principal’s Ponderings As we prepare for the start of another school year, I would like to welcome everyone back to including our newest Mustangs – the Class of 2024.

We welcome Katie Cole, Morgan Farmer, Charris Glass, Karin Goebel, Stephen Goebel, LaKiesha Graham, Eliot Haas, and Mary Lawson to our amazing faculty. In a couple of weeks, we will have a new freshman/sophomore counselor. Thank you to Mrs. Lanclos, Mrs. Miles, and Mrs. Parnell for working with our 9th & 10th grade families! While they have done an excellent job, we are looking forward to having a dedicated counselor in this role.

Mustangs continue to make us proud even during the summer. Sloan Hall and Alex Lowe both placed in the George Rodrigue Art Contest! Sophia Nicolosi was selected as the Distinguished Young Woman of and will represent our state in the national contest! Diya Desai, Sarah Johnson, and Abigail Nickelson all joined the CMHS Perfect ACT Club! That makes fourteen perfect ACT scores of 36 since the 2015-16 school year.

Of course this year will have challenges like no other. First and foremost, we are dedicated to providing a healthy and safe environment to our students, staff, and faculty. We will follow the guidelines and protocols that have been put in place by Dr. Goree and his staff. Second, we are as committed as always to achieve Excellence in Education as evidenced by our teachers working, training, and preparing for weeks now during their “time off”. The Caddo Magnet faculty has shown tremendous growth since March in the use of technology and teaching in a virtual environment. Third, we will continue to offer as many opportunities to your student as possible.

With the restrictions that we find ourselves under, there are some new policies that I really need everyone to follow. Students cannot arrive on campus before 8:00. While we were able to accommodate that in the past, it is not possible at this time. Once students arrive on campus, they are to go directly to their first period classroom. We cannot operate with stu- dents gathering together in common areas before class.

Parents will not be able to deliver lunches during the day. While we have never encouraged this due to the logistical problems it can create, we have never turned anyone away. But this year, visitors will be limited until we come out of phase III. Please keep in mind, however, that all students are able to eat for free from the cafeteria, both breakfast and lunch. Meals will be in grab and go bags and consumed in a small group setting in the classroom.

While we will still have after-school tutoring, extracurriculars, athletic practices, etc., students not involved in any official school activity need to leave the campus in a timely manner as soon as school is over for the day at 3:55. Students may not congregate in the front and wait for hours after school to be picked up.

Please make sure your child has a mask to wear each day. We will have some disposable versions for those that forget, but this cannot become a habitual situation with the same stu- dent. Our supplies are limited.

While we have chromebooks to issue to students, if possible, we encourage your child to use their own device. We will not be sharing chromebooks from a cart each period as in the past. Students on the hybrid schedule will carry the device with them from class to class.

We are prepared to be flexible and make changes as needed. We are all dedicated to mak- ing this work. While there are many changes, one thing that has not changed is our commit- ment to your family! I promise we will strive to do our best every day, will learn from our mis- takes, and will continue to help ALL of our students reach their full potential! Thank you for continuing to believe in us!

Michael Ilgenfritz

Parents will be allowed to be on campus for things such as check-outs and parent meetings (if not done virtually). Parent delivery of lunch will not be allowed until we leave phase III. My name is Julie Lyles and I am excited to be serving as this year’s Membership VP for the Magnet PTSA! Magnet’s PTSA is an organization dedicated to service…to our teachers, our parents and our students. We sponsor a number of events throughout the school year designed to enrich the high school experience and to support our students, as well as coordinate activities to show our faculty and staff how much they are appreciated!

This year will be different than any other due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and some of the programs the PTSA supports may look a little different or may not happen at all. We may be called on to help out with things that were never on our radar before as well, such as purchasing cleaning supplies or masks or other items that will help ensure the safety of our faculty, staff and students as we take a new approach to education. That being said, I feel that joining the PTSA is more important now that it even has been. The PTSA at Magnet does not formally fundraise, so our budget for the year is primarily built on membership fees and Friends of Magnet donations. In order to have the money we need to support our programs, as well as meeting any special needs if they arise, we will need your support!

Joining is easy! Memberships are just $10 and I strongly encourage the whole family to join! The “S” in PTSA stands for “student” and there are benefits to being a student member! The favorite benefit? Each student member gets their name entered into a monthly drawing for a gift card! Sonic and Chick-fil-A were huge hits last year! Joining the PTSA is also a great way to stay con- nected to the school and get the low-down on what’s happening around campus! Plus, you might make a new friend or two!

Friends of Magnet donations are yet another way to help out! There are three different levels: Red ($50), Yellow ($100), and Red & Yellow ($250). You also have an option to donate an amount of your choice. Every dollar of these donations goes to sup- port our PTSA programs!

I hope that you will consider joining this year! There are several ways to get signed up which are outlined in the accompanying flyer! We also hope that you will find a volunteer opportunity that speaks to you! Whether it’s your time, your talents, or a case of water…we are always happy to have you! If you have any questions, please feel free to call, text or email me!

Sincerely, Julie (318) 455-1964

[email protected] BACK - TO- SCHOOL EDITI ON P A G E 8 Key Club News For the past 5 years, Key Club has purchased and given away hun- dreds of backpacks stuffed with school supplies to children in the Valencia neighborhood in partnership with the Valencia Community Center. However, due to the state of things this year, we are una- ble to have that type of back to school celebration and large group gathering. So we decided to go directly to the elementary school that serves so many of the neighborhood children.

CMHS Key Club donated the following to Stoner Hill Elementary: 40 backpacks 120 boxes of tissue 384 pencils 500 disposable face masks 1200 bottles of water

We are thrilled and honored to be able to support our Owl neighbors and hope for a safe and healthy year for all Owls and Mustangs alike. And a HUGE thanks to my husband, Miles McDowell, who filled in for the dozen Key Clubbers I usually have helping me!

Kathryn McDowell Caddo Magnet High School Math Department chair AP Calculus AB/BC AP Statistics JOIN MAGNET PTSA TODAY!

Joining is easy! You can do it one of three ways: 1. Find the Membership table at school events (COVID restrictions may affect this) and join right then & there! I’d love to meet you! 2. Fill our your membership form, include cash/check, and turn it into the office! 3. Go to the Magnet PTSA website (www.caddomagnetptsa.net), click on the “Membership” tab at the top of the page and then fill out AND pay for your memberships electronically!

What joining PTSA isn’t…

• an automatic expectation that you will be volunteering your time at every PTSA event.

• joining a clique of unfriendly “super parents” that only keep to themselves.

• asking to be “nickeled and dimed” throughout the school year. What joining PTSA IS…

• an invitation to learn about the opportunities available to support your child’s school! If something speaks to you, we’d love to have your help!

• an invitation to meet other people like yourself! It’s never too late to make a new friend (or two, or three…)!

• an opportunity to serve your child’s school, faculty and staff by donating your time, tal- ents, and/or money on YOUR terms! (Magnet PTSA does not formally fundraise)

• a way to stay informed about what’s going on at school (because we all know that our teenagers aren’t always the most talkative)!

• an opportunity to have your voice heard!
