The Louisiana Family Forum (LFF) recently released a comprehensive analysis of life in Louisiana entitled “The Louisiana Cultural Indicators Report (LCIR).” The LCIR was modeled after former Reagan adviser, Bill Benett’s 1994 Index of Leading Cultural Indicators. Bennett held that even as we measure economic data as a measure of societal fitness, so we must also consider key social indi- cators. Decades of Louisiana data has been compiled and il- lustrated through charts, graphs and snapshots. The LCIR tracks Louisiana’s progress in the area of health, crime, family, education, poverty, welfare, government and busi- ness.

For 2015, Louisiana has reason to celebrate: : 1. The high school graduation rate is at an all-time high of 83 percent. 2. 4-year college degrees have increased 148 percent since 1970. 3. 25 percent of Louisiana K-12 students participate in some form of educational choice, saving taxpayers $1.7 billion. 4. Since 1969 the percentage of families in poverty has declined by 35 percent.

Troublesome trends include:

1. Out-of-wedlock births jumped 490 percent, since 1969. 2. Only 36 percent of teens grow up in intact married biological families. 16 percent of black teens with married parents. 3. Louisiana has the third highest HIV infection and syphilis rate in the U.S., second in chlamydia and highest rate of reported cases of gonorrhea.

Welcome As do others in the Shreveport area, we at Barnabas Center Ministries, welcome Cantor Neil Schwartz, the new hazzan at Shreveport’s conser- vative synagogue, Agudath Achim. Cantor Schwartz was installed August 16, with Rabbi Michael Rascoe of Long Island, NY officiating. The congregation’s guests included members of the press and area clergy, and Rabbi Jana di Benedetti of Shreveport’s Reform Jewish Synagogue, B’nai Zion. New to Shreveport, Cantor Schwartz’s professional background includes service as a teacher, choir director, and adjunct professor for Hebrew College in Newton Centre, Massachusetts. Interesting note: In 1904 the building of the original synagogue was halted by the yellow fever epidemic. When news spread of the setbacks, Jews and Christians from across the city stepped forward to provide the needed funds. On September 8, 1905, much of the town crowded into Agudath Achim’s “magnificent edifice” to participate in the new synagogue’s consecration service. Operation Christmas Child

As most of us know OCC is a year round ministry. The Diamond Set organization at First Baptist Bossier knows that well. Consisting of seniors in their early fifties to mid- nineties, this group is one of the biggest contributors to Operation Christmas Child. Last year they collected around $10,000.00, and packed and shipped 500 GO boxes. This year, through their Christmas In July Bazaar, they received a very generous anonymous donation of $10,000.00 and col- lected an additional $8,000.00. Another part of the team is the quilting ladies. They have already quilted and auctioned one quilt for $600.00. They have just finished another and I believe the current bid is in excess of $1,000.00. John Carruth On Wednesday, September 23, 2015, thousands of middle and high stu- dents around the ArkLaTex will gather before school for a time of prayer at an event known as See You at the Pole™. See You at the Pole is simply a prayer rally where students meet at the school flagpole before school to lift up their friends, families, teachers, school, and nation to God. See You at the Pole™ is a student-initiated, student-organized, and student-led event. In early 1990 a small group of teenagers in Burleson, Texas, came to- gether for a DiscipleNow weekend. On Saturday night their hearts were penetrated like never before, when they became broken before God and burdened for their friends. Compelled to pray, they drove to three differ- ent schools that night. Not knowing exactly what to do, they went to the school flagpoles and prayed for their friends, schools, and leaders. God used what He did among those teenagers and others who were holding similar prayer meetings at their schools to birth a vision, the vi- sion was that students throughout Texas would follow these examples and meet at their school flagpoles to pray simultaneously. The challenge was named See You at the Pole™.
