ТЮРИН ИВАН АЛЕКСЕЕВИЧ (1824, с. Галядкино Ардатовского уезда Нижегородской губ. - 30.12.1904 (12.01.1905), Павловск) Живописец. Портретист, автор иконостасов и религиозных образов, реставратор. Из обер-офицерских детей. Образование получил в одной из московских гимназий. С 1845 г. - вольноприходящий ученик ИАХ. С 1841 - при классе исторической живописи у А. Т. Маркова. В 1850 получил звание свободного художника. В 1855 г. открыл фотоателье в доме 25/1 на углу Невского пр. и Казанской ул. в С.-Петербурге с вывеской «Светописный Салон господина Тюрина». Уже через год газеты писали, что «... он был первым мастером фотопортрета - кажется, его ателье в Петербурге было одним из первых по времени, и уж точно - самым известным... Таких фотографий на бумаге, как у нас нет нигде. В особенности убедили нас в этом фотографии художника Академии И.А.Тюрина. Tracing the efforts of natural philosophers and political theorists, this dissertation explores competing frameworks at the intersection between the natural and human sciences – Social Darwinism at one pole and Socialist Darwinism at the other, the latter best articulated by Peter Alexeyevich Kropotkin’s Darwinian theory of mutual aid. These frameworks were conceptualized within different scientific cultures during a contentious period both in the life sciences as well as the sociopolitical environments of Russia, Europe, and England. This cross- pollination of scientific and sociopolitical discourse contributed to competing frameworks of knowledge construction in both the natural and human sciences.

In Moscow, for example, paradoxes and enigmas abound – to the bewilderment of the Western tourist and to the gratification of the Russianist, all of whom may ask why – 1. the Leningradskoe Highway goes to St. Petersburg; 2. the metro stop for the Russian State Library is still called Lenin Library Station; 3. there are two different stations called “Arbatskaia” on two different metro lines and two different stations called “Smolenskaia” on two different metro lines; 4.

RUSSIA To those who remember the USSR, the Soviet Union was an empire of emptiness. Common words and expressions were “defitsit” [deficit], “dostat’”, [get hold of], “seraia zhizn’” [grey life], “pusto” [empty], “magazin zakryt na uchet” [store closed for accounting] or “na pereuchet” [for a second accounting] or “na remont” (for repairs)_ or simply “zakryt”[closed]. There were no malls, no traffic, no household trash, no money, no consumer stores or advertisements, no foreign newspapers, no freedoms, often no ball-point pens or toilet-paper, and if something like bananas from Cuba suddenly appeared in the wasteland, they vanished within minutes.

Prince of Imperial Blood Oleg Konstantinovich was opened in Tsarskoye Selo September 29, in Tsarskoye Selo, in the territory of the St. Sophia Cathedral was inaugurated a monument to the son of Grand Duke Konstantin Konstantinovich - Prince Oleg Konstantinovich, who participated in the First World War and was mortally wounded during a battle, and died a few days later. He gave his life for the Faith, Tsar and Fatherland. The monument is made on the initiative of the Fund Ludvig Nobel. The location for the monument is well chosen and not at all accidental. St. Sophia cathedral was the regimental church of the Life-Guard Hussar Regiment, in which served Prince Oleg. The sculpture is not entirely new, as it is cast after the pre-revolutionary model by the sculptor Vsevolod Lishev. Anna Yakovleva, Ludvig Nobel Foundation: "The sketch of the monument was designed by sculptor Lishev in 1915. But after the events that followed, it could not be put, but it was casted. By the way, the sketch was approved by the father of Oleg Konstantinovich." The new monument is made by sculptor Yaroslav Borodin. The ceremony began with a memorial service at the St. Sophia Cathedral, which was headed by Dean of the Tsarskoye Selo district Archpriest Gennady (Zverev). Chairman of the Imperial Orthodox Palestine Society, Sergey Stepashin said - "Today is a truly historic day. It is a day when we remember the wonderful and worthy representative of the Romanov dynasty, who died at age 22 on the front of the First World War.

Marcelline Hutton Resilient Russian Women in the 1920s & 1930s The stories of Russian educated women, peasants, prisoners, workers, wives, and mothers of the 1920s and 1930s show how work, marriage, family, religion, and even patriotism helped sustain them during harsh times. The Russian Revolution launched an economic and social upheaval that released peasant women from the control of traditional extended fam- ilies. It promised urban women equality and created opportunities for employment and higher education. Yet, the revolution did little to elim- inate Russian patriarchal culture, which continued to undermine wom- en’s social, sexual, economic, and political conditions. Divorce and abor- tion became more widespread, but birth control remained limited, and sexual liberation meant greater freedom for men than for women. The transformations that women needed to gain true equality were post- poned by the pov erty of the new state and the political agendas of lead- ers like Lenin, Trotsky, and Stalin.
