La tappa inizia dai 1041 metri del Passo della Cisa da dove si seguono sentieri fino al passo del Righetto, qua inizia una ripida e impegnativa discesa fino a Groppoli. Si prosegue attraversando i borghi ancora ben conservati e ricchi di fascino di Groppodalosio - famoso per un ponte medioevale che attraversa il fiume Magra - poi una lunga salita porta al passo della Crocetta. Da qui si scende infine lungo una mulattiera tra riposanti paesaggi boschivi e si raggiunge Pontremoli, che si trova tra due corsi d'acqua ed è caratterizzata da un gran numero di ponti, palazzi e chiese medievali. Da Pontremoli inizia un percorso senza particolari dislivelli lungo le strade sterrate e sentieri, per lunghi tratti nel bosco. Attraversato il torrente Bagnone, si sale a Virgoletta e si procede per Terrarossa, dominata dal castello Malaspina, prima di giungere ad Aulla. We have left behind Emilia Romagna and we are preparing to face the new paths of Lunigiana - a historical Italian region, administratively divided between Liguria and Tuscany. The stage starts from the 1041 meters of the Cisa Pass from where we follow trails to the Righetto Pass, here begins a steep and challenging descent to Groppoli. It continues through the villages still well preserved and full of charm of Groppodalosio - famous for a medieval bridge that crosses the river Magra, then a long climb leads to the Crocetta pass. From here we finally descend along a mule track among restful wooded landscapes and reach Pontremoli, which takes place between two rivers and is characterized by a large number of bridges, palaces and medieval churches. From Pontremoli begins a route without particular differences in height along dirt roads and paths, for long stretches in the woods. After crossing the stream Bagnone, we go up to Virgoletta and proceed to Terrarossa, dominated by the Malaspina castle, before reaching Aulla. 3 AGRIRISTORANTE LA MIONA Licciana Nardi (MS) Loc. A long stretch of road will teach you more about yourself than a hundred years of quiet. – Patrick Rothfuss, American writer he Road to Rome or Via Francigena to Rome is – like the Camino de Santiago de Compostela – an historic medieval route that takes pilgrims on an epic journey through some of Europe's most stunning regions from Canterbury, TEngland, across the channel to France, and through Switzerland, before crossing Italy on their way to the tomb of St Peter in Rome. The Via Francigena was named a European Cultural Route by the Council of Europe in 1994. It was the year 990 when Sigeric, the Archbishop of Canterbury, travelled to Rome to receive his pallium (papal investiture) from the pope. On his return, Sigeric made notes of all 79 stops he made, which he called submansiones, in his travel diary. Today it is an immensely important historic document that allows us to reconstruct what was very likely the most used pilgrimage path around the year 1000. But the history of the Via Francigena is more than just Sigeric's words, and stretches even further back in time. The origins of the route date to the Lombards, who by the 6th century were crossing Monte Bardone, between Berceto (Emilia-Romagna) and Pontremoli (Tuscany), near what is today Passo della Cisa (Liguria) in the Apennine Alps, a secure route for reaching the historic maritime destinations of Luni (Liguria) and Tuscia, far from the routes controlled by the Byzantines, their undeniable enemies.

Da qui si scende infine lungo una mulattiera tra riposanti paesaggi boschivi e si raggiunge Pontremoli, che si trova tra due corsi d'acqua ed è caratterizzata da un gran numero di ponti, palazzi e chiese medievali. Da Pontremoli inizia un percorso senza particolari dislivelli lungo strade sterrate e sentieri, per lunghi tratti nel bosco. Attraversato il torrente Bagnone, si sale a Virgoletta e si procede per Terrarossa, dominata dal castello Malaspina, prima di giungere ad Aulla.
