PPocetaka.inddocetaka.indd 9 44.4.2019..4.2019. 110:57:130:57:13 KKaustubhaaustubha MManiani - PPocetaka.inddocetaka.indd 1010 44.4.2019..4.2019. 110:57:140:57:14 Introduction Someone may say: “What is the need for one more compilation book in our society of Kṛṣṇa’s devotees, we already have a few excellent books of that kind?” Yes, that is true. There are some compilation works from our great preceptors and pure devotees [for example Śrīla Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura and Śrīla Bhaktisid- dhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura] and we also have a very nice book of Śrīla Prabhupāda ślokas. But let me point out that in the process of learning and studying repetition certainly plays the key role, as the old Latin sentence says – Repetitio est mater studiorum. Also, when two persons do the same thing, it is never the same, as the another Latin sentence confi rms – Si duo faciunt idem, non est idem. So, in presenting this compilation of mine [Kaustub- ha maṇi] and probably repeating many things already spoken by our great masters, I do not see anything wrong, I do not see any harm. The prime duty of disciples and grand-disciples is to repeat the words of their masters and to follow their footsteps without deviation. Now, I fi nd it quite appropriate to mention that I am presenting this work of mine in the mature period of my life, and after spending more than thirty years in constant chant- ing, reading, translating and even personally writing some books [for additional information please do visit my web site – www. darpaharidas.org]. So, this compilation is the attempt of a senior devotee to touch [and share with others] just a drop of nectarean “water” coming from the vast ocean of Vedic wisdom. Kaustubha maṇi is, so to say, a text book, intended [in the fi rst place] for the preachers in the Hare Kṛṣṇa movement, as well as for all other English speaking devotees who want to improve their knowledge and make their devotion more profound. It is the result of my everyday’s reading hours and association with Śrīla Prabhupāda’s principal books [Bhagavad-gītā, Śrīmad-Bhāgav- atam, Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta and Nectar of Devotion]. During these hours I have made some efforts to write out [on the small xi KKaustubhaaustubha MManiani - PPocetaka.inddocetaka.indd 1111 44.4.2019..4.2019. 110:57:140:57:14 sheets of paper] all the “things” I have found interesting, sig- nifi cant and inspiring. [Now I know that all these “things”, pre- sented in such a brilliant way, have been imposed on my mind and heart by the power of Śrīla Prabhupāda’s grace.] Eventually that pile of papers has been transformed into a book – Kaustub- ha maṇi, which I decided [or dared] to print in its “raw” form, without any systematization,

How can I speak of the greatness of Srirangam? Fourteen divine years are not enough for me to say and for you to listen Yama’s predicament is worse than mine! He has no kingdom to rule over! All mortals go to Srirangam and have their sins expiated And the devas? They too go to Srirangam to be born as mortals! Shiva to Narada in the Sriranga Mahatmaya Introduction Great civilizations have been created and sustained around river systems across the world. India is no exception and in the Tamil country amongst the most famous rivers, Kaveri (among the seven sacred rivers of India) has been the source of wealth for several dynasties that rose and fell along her banks. Affectionately called Ponni, alluding to Pon being gold, the Kaveri river flows in Tamil Nadu for approx. 445 Kilometers out of its 765 Kilometers. Ancient poets have extolled her beauty and compared her to a woman who wears many fine jewels. If these jewels are the prosperous settlements on her banks, the island of Srirangam 500 acres and 13 kilometers long and 7 kilometers at its widest must be her crest jewel. Everything about Srirangam is massive – it is at 156 acres (perimeter of 10,710 feet) the largest Hindu temple complex in worship after Angkor which is now a Buddhist temple.

This image is very unique. Here, one can see Ramanuja with the gnyAna mudra (the sign of a teacher; see his right/left hands); usually, Swami Ramanuja’s images always present him in the anjali mudra (offering worship, both hands together in obeisance). Our elders say that Swami Ramanuja’s image at Thirumala shows the gnyAna mudra, because it is here that Swami Ramanuja gave his lectures on Vedarta Sangraha, his insightful, profound treatise on the meaning of the Upanishads. It is also said that Swami Ramanuja here is considered an Acharya to Lord Srinivasa Himself, and that is why the hundi is located right in front of swami Ramanuja at the temple (as a mark of respect to an Acharya). In Thirumala, other than Lord Srinivasa, Varaha, Narasimha and A VEDICS JOURNAL Varadaraja, the only other accepted shrine is that of Swami Ramanuja.

D. Reader in Sanskrit, University of Delhi T4201 T420 1 THE VEDANTA-KAUSTUBHA-PRAT^HA OF KESAVAKASMIRIBHATTA : * • A CRITICAL STUDY _P _F^_E_F_A_C_E_ IVie Nimbarka school of Vedanta has not so far been fully explored by modern scholars. There are only a couple of significant studies on Nimbarka, published about 50 years ago. The main reason for not ransacking this system seems to be the non availability of the basic texts. The followers of this school did not give much importance to the publications and mostly remained absorbed in the sastric analysis of the Ultimate Reality and its realization. One question still remains unanswered as to why there is no reference to Sankarabhasya in Nimbarka's commentary on the Brahma-sutras entitled '"IVie Vedanta-pari jata-saurabha", and why Nimbarka has not refuted the views of his opponents, as the other Vaisnava Acaryas such as R"amanuja, Vallabha, ^rikara, Srikantha and Baladeva Vidyabhusana have done. A comprehensive study of the Nimbarka school of Vedanta is still a longlelt desideratum. Even today the basic texts of this school are not available to scholars and whatsoever are available, they are in corrupt form and the editions are full of mistakes. (ii) On account of the lack of academic interest on the part of the followers of this school, no critical edition of any Sanskrit text has so far been prepared. Therefore, the critical editions of some of the important Sanskrit texts viz.

  • Becoming Meek and Humble Is Outcome of Advancement in Krishna Consciousness
Becoming meek and humble is outcome of advancement in Krishna Consciousness Venue: Pandharpur maitreya uvaca “iti bruvanam nrpatim gayaka muni-coditah tustuvus tusta-manasas tad-vag-amrta-sevaya” (S.B 4.16.1) Translation and purport by Srila Prabhupada. Translation: The great sage Maitreya continued: While King Prthu thus spoke; the humility of his nectarean speeches pleased the reciters very much. Then again they continued to praise the King highly with exalted prayers, as they had been instructed by the great sages. Purport: Here the word muni-coditah indicates instructions received from great sages and saintly persons. Although Maharaja Prthu was simply enthroned on the royal seat and was not at that time exhibiting his godly powers, the reciters like the suta, the Magadha and the vandi understood that King Prthu was an incarnation of God. They could understand this by the instructions given by the great sages and learned brahmanas. We have to understand the incarnations of God by the instructions of authorized persons. We cannot manufacture a God by our own concoctions. As stated by Narottama dasa Thakura, sadhu-sastra-guru: one has to test all spiritual matters according to the instructions of saintly persons, scriptures and the spiritual master. The spiritual master is one who follows the instructions of his predecessors, namely the sadhus, or saintly persons. A bona fide spiritual master does not mention anything not mentioned in the authorized scriptures. Ordinary people have to follow the instructions of sadhu, sastra and guru. Those statements made in the sastras and those made but the bona fide sadhu or guru cannot differ from one another.

  • Shiva ≡ the Supreme
    || || ॐ नमो भगवते वासुदेवाय || नमः || ी कृ णाय Shiva ≡ The Supreme It is a foregone conclusion in Advaita Vedanta that Vishnu = Shiva. Why then point to scriptural passages that extol Shiva (also) as the Supreme? There is one purpose, though not very lofty. Most Hindus grow up in families that read the Ramayana and the Gita, celebrate festivals like Ramanavami and Gokulashtami, and make a pilgrimage to Tirupathi. This does not go unnoticed by some Vaishnavas, who time and again selectively quote the scriptures to ‘prove’ that Vishnu alone is the Supreme, and that Shiva is an ‘inferior’ deity. They (often) go on to claim that Vishnu is to be exclusively worshipped, suggesting that worshipping Shiva is less recommended in the Scriptures – or worse, that it may actually be ‘wrong’ to do so! As this issue keeps popping up repeatedly, this present write-up will (hopefully) end any doubts in that regard. Only two Scriptures will be cited here, which are accepted by all Hindus – the Mahabharata and the Yajur-Veda. The English translation of a verse will be supplied first, after which will follow (in most cases) its Sanskrit transliteration (saMskRRitam ) in the ITRANS format. The translation of the Mahabharata by Kisari Mohan Ganguli has been used almost verbatim, with negligible changes. Unless otherwise specified, “Shiva” will refer to the Being who resides in Kailasa, has a Blue Throat, uses Nandi for a vehicle, etc.; and “Vishnu” will denote the Being who resides in Vaikuntha, bears the Kaustubha gem, uses Garuda for a vehicle, etc. If one wants to skip the explicit details and directly obtain the conclusion, please visit the last Section V below.
