The present study exhibits the forest cover change on Global Forest Non-Forest (FNF) data for India and greenness trend using MOD15A2H LAI product, which is the best product available till date. JAXA uses of SAR datasets for forest classification based on FAO definitions. Later, Forest Survey of India (FSI) used different definitions for forest classification from FAO and was to compare with JAXA based forest cover. The global FNF study exhibited that total forest cover was reduced from 568249 Km2 to 534958 Km2 during 2007-17 in India. The significant loss of forest cover (33291.59 Km2; by -5.85% change) was primarily evident in Eastern Himalayas followed by Western Himalayas. -

Timetable: 1) Class-hour will be of 1 hour and the time schedule of classes should be from 10.30 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. with 30 minutes lunch-break during 1.30 to 2.00 p.m., from Monday to Friday. Thus there shall be maximum 6 classes a day. 2) Normal 16 class-hours in a week may be kept for direct class instructions. The remaining 14 hours in a week shall be kept for Tutorial, Dissertation, Seminar, Assignments, Special Classes, holding class-tests etc. as may be required for the course. B. Course-papers and Allocation of Class-Hours per Course: 1) For evaluation purposes, each course shall be of 100 marks and for each course of 100 marks total number of direct instruction hours (theory/practical/field-training) shall be 48 hours. 2) The full course in 4 semesters shall be of total 1600 marks with total 16 courses (Fifteen Core Courses & One Open Course). In each semester, the course work shall be for 4 courses of total 400 marks. C. Credit Specification of the Course Curricula: M.A. Course in Folklore shall comprise 4 semesters. Each semester shall have 4 courses. In all, there shall be 16 courses of 4 credits each. -

NAVCHOO Department of Botany University of Kashmir Srinagar 190006 India ABSTRACf.-This paper puts on record the ethnobotanical information of some plants used by inhabitants of Ladakh (India) for medicine, A comparison of the uses of these plants in Ladakh and other parts of India reveal that 21 species have varied uses while 19 species are not reported used. INTRODUCTION Ladakh (elev. 3000-59G(}m), the northernmost part of India is one of the most elevated regions of the world with habitation up to 55(}(}m. The general aspect is of barren topography. The climate is extremely dry with scanty rainfall and very little snowfall (Kachroo et al. 1976). The region is traditionally rich in ethnic folklore and has a distinct culture as yet undisturbed by external influences. The majority of the population is Buddhist and follow their own system of medicine, which has been in vogue for centuries and is extensively practiced. It offers interesting insight into an ancient medical profession. The system of medicine is the"Amchi system" (Tibetan system) and the practi tioner, an"Amchi." The system has something in common with the "Unani" (Greek) and"Ayurvedic" (Indian) system of medicine. Unani is the traditional system which originated in the middle east and was followed and developed in the Muslim world; whereas the Ayurvedic system is that followed by Hindus since Rig vedic times. Both are still practiced in India. Though all the three systems make USe of herbs (fresh and dry), minerals, animal products, etc., the Amchi system, having evolved in its special environment, has its own characteristics. -

The soil fertility, soil wetness, and slope map are scientifically produced and integrated to find out the landscape suitable Land potentiality, categories for prioritization of trees/crops scaling in the agroforestry domain. Additionally, we Remote sensing & have examined the drift of loss of soil wetness using satellite data from monsoon to post- GIS, Soil fertility, monsoon period up to the village level. The analysis logically revealed the potentially suitable soil wetness, landscape (28%: high; 38%: medium; 25%: low and 9%: very low) for tree/crop farming. -

Abstract Among the hand woven sarees of India, Paithani is famous and has played a significant role in weaving together the socio-cultural fabric of Maharashtra since it is traditionally a part of the trousseau of every Maharashtra bride. The aim of the study was to document the existing weaving traditions of Paithani and explore the possibility of weaving Paithani as a yardage with different product layout. To achieve the formulated objectives a descriptive cum exploratory study was planned. Data collection was done through observation and interview schedule during field visits in Bhandge Lane, Yeola. The weavers were selected through purposive random sampling. Adaptation of Paithani saree layout on handloom was done for selected product range to unearth new opportunities for a local craft and help them expand their market. Data analysis indicated that the younger generation was involved in the traditional weaving of Paithani saree. The weavers were training their children in traditional weaving practices of Paithani; contributing positively to its sustainability. The craft details in terms of raw materials, loom set-up, dyeing, weaving process, types of Paithani, colours and motifs was documented through photographs and supplemented with text. It was reassuring to learn that 80 per cent of weavers would prefer to diversify into other products instead of just weaving saree if done using same technique of Paithani weaving. -

BRIEFING India: environmental issues SUMMARY The entire south Asian region is threatened by climate change. Changes in average weather conditions are likely to create hotspots across the region and have negative impacts on living standards and gross domestic product (GDP). India is at the core of this trend: it ranks 14th in the last United Nations global climate risk index and in 2017 it was the second most-affected country in terms of casualties related to extreme weather. Air quality in Indian cities is quickly deteriorating and it is today worse than the situation in China: in the 2018 World Health Organization (WHO) global ambient air quality database, 11 of the 12 cities with the highest levels of small particulate – PM2.5 – are located in India. Air pollution goes hand in hand with poverty: in 2016 an estimated 790 million people (almost 60 % of the Indian population), still relied on biomass for cooking. Deforestation, water pollution, clean water shortages, and waste management are further issues of concern. The Indian authorities have taken several initiatives to tackle these issues. In 2008, the first national plan on climate change (NAPCC) outlined eight 'national missions' running up to 2017. India is a leader in the implementation of the Paris Agreement on climate change. It is a founding member of the International Solar Alliance and has ambitious targets in terms of solar power energy. It has launched a national clean air programme (NCAP) to combat air pollution. Prime Minister's Narendra Modi government has launched several flagship initiatives on environment, including a clean cooking scheme, Clean India, Clean Ganga, and Smart Cities Mission.
