I was doing the Run for the Cure in Kelowna with my friends and colleagues from UBCrsquo;s Okanagan campus. It was two and a half years since my best friend and sister-in-law had died from breast cancer. I had helped my children write Auntie Nan on their ldquo;Irsquo;m Running For hellip;rdquo; signs that were pinned to the back of our t-shirts.

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR This year has been filled with significant change and considerable accomplishments, culminating with the launch of our new program and application system FACTOR 2.0 in April 2013. The goal of FACTOR 2.0 was simple: design a system and programs that award funding based on merit, are transparent and easy to use, and reflect the current business models of the Canadian independent music industry. This type of change was long overdue, as FACTOR’s previous funding model was based heavily on out-of-date business practices, which focused primarily on the physical sale of recorded music.

Page 2 Colby Free Press Monday, February 27, 2006 Opinion Free Press Viewpoint Where’s America? What has not been talked about related to an Arab company owning six major American ports has nothing to do with the threat of incoming terrorists. What needs to be addressed is it is yet another form of American com- merce in the hands of somebody outside the country. Critics of the recent proposed acquisition of the ports are blaming the Bush administration the ports will be the gate terrorists will easily walk through to get to the United States. The Bush administration quickly de- nied those accusations and Bush, again, emphasized the American people will be safe and secure. The United Arab Emirates company is reviewing the entire proposal before signing on the dotted line. If and when approved, the Arab company will purchase the ports from a British company. Where has been the American interest in the ports? Why can’t an American company own those ports? Do they want to or are they too busy merging with other companies? The growing number of things produced outside the States but sold here is staggering. Now, we will continue to have foreign-made products ar- riving in America at still foreign-owned ports. It’s disturbing. Look around your place of work or home and try and find things that are made in America. Bush has been plagued since his first term of many American compa- nies loading moving trucks and relocating jobs to Mexico, China and India. American workers then head for the unemployment line.

Following the intermission, the second half of the show is a song- writers-in-the-round format with all performers on stage, each taking a turn on a song and accompanying each other. Throughout it all there will be conversation about each artist's career, stories behind the music, the craft of songwriting, anecdotes and tall tales from the road. To conclude, the storytellers will take questions and requests from the audience. MC for the evening will be Ralph Alfonso (aka Ralph), who developed the concept with Vancouver’s Paul Mercs Concerts.
