DATE OF PUBLICATION OF THE OFFICIAL VALID STANDARD: 01.10.1999. UTILIZATION: Hunting dog not only for hare, fox, roe-deer and bustard, but also for the wolf. FCЕ-CLASSIFICATION : Group 10 Sighthounds. Section 3 Short-haired Sighthounds. Without working trial. BRIEF HISTORICAL SUMMARY: The presence of the Chart Polski in Poland is attested since the 13th century; this breed goes probably back to Asiatic sighthounds of Saluki type. The Borzoi being unknown before the reign of Iwan the Terrible during the XVIth century, it is impossible, as claimed by the Russian author Sabaniejew, that the Chart Polski would be the result of interbreeding between the Greyhound and the Borzoi. The mention of the Chart Polski in the literature, especially the hunt-literature, is frequent and the iconographic representations are noticeably unvarying. This uniform general appearance in drawings and paintings proves, that, in spite of different interbreeding, the original aspect of the breed has remained unchanged up to the end of the XIXth century. GENERAL APPEARANCE: The Polish Greyhound is a dog of great size, powerful, muscular, definitely stronger and less fine in shape than the other short-haired sighthounds (he must not, however, be heavy nor lethargic). In his appearance, he is similar to the Asiatic greyhound who is his ancestor. FCE-St. №10-333/01.01.1999 3 The strong frame, the short coupled body, the distinctly visible musculature and the powerful jaws show that this dog has been used for hunting in the difficult conditions of the Polish climate.

The first descriptions of hunting with greyhounds can be found in the hunting literature of the 16th century, and the first detailed description of a greyhound comes from 1600. The Polish Greyhound probably originates from the Saluki-type Asian greyhounds. The population of this breed is very small and limited mainly to the territory of its country of origin (Poland). Pedigree books were opened for this breed in 1981. The narrow gene pool necessitated mating relatives, resulting in the appearance of various genetic diseases in the breed. Entropion is a rolling of the eyelid inward toward the eye. It is fairly com- mon condition in a wide variety of dog breeds and its mode of inheritance is not well understood. Entropion has been also documented in the population of Polish Hounds. The current size of the population is estimated at 1000 dogs. The Polish Hound is a breed with low genetic variation and high imbalance of founder contributions to the gene pool of the present population. The first study on entropion in Polish Hounds per- formed in Poland in 2002 showed that only 29 out of 100 dogs examined were healthy. Further studies revealed that 17 out of 74 dogs had entropion. The aim of this rese- arch was to analyze the incidence of entropion in the population of Polish Hounds. In total, 158 letters were sent out to the breeders and owners of Polish Hounds to solicit medical information about the condition of dogs’ eyelids. Overall, we only obtained information on 19 dogs from 18 persons. The conclusion is that Polish Hound breeders and owners, and even the management of the Polish Hound Club are not interested in giving information about the cases of entropion and probably for economic reasons, elimination of affected animals from breeding. Lack of interest of breeders and dog owners in cooperation in this area makes the studies on tracing this defect inheritance in Polish Hounds impossible.
