UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Marvelous Generations: Lancastrian Genealogies and Translation in Late Medieval and Early Modern England and Iberia A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in English by Sara Victoria Torres 2014 © Copyright by Sara Victoria Torres 2014 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Marvelous Generations: Lancastrian Genealogies and Translation in Late Medieval and Early Modern England and Iberia by Sara Victoria Torres Doctor of Philosophy in English University of California, Los Angeles, 2014 Professor Christine Chism, Co-chair Professor Lowell Gallagher, Co-chair My dissertation, “Marvelous Generations: Lancastrian Genealogies and Translation in Late Medieval and Early Modern England and Iberia,” traces the legacy of dynastic internationalism in the fifteenth, sixteenth, and early-seventeenth centuries. I argue that the situated tactics of courtly literature use genealogical and geographical paradigms to redefine national sovereignty. Before the defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588, before the divorce trials of Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon in the 1530s, a rich and complex network of dynastic, economic, and political alliances existed between medieval England and the Iberian kingdoms. The marriages of John of Gaunt’s two daughters to the Castilian and Portuguese kings created a legacy of Anglo-Iberian cultural exchange ii that is evident in the literature and manuscript culture of both England and Iberia. Because England, Castile, and Portugal all saw the rise of new dynastic lines at the end of the fourteenth century, the subsequent literature produced at their courts is preoccupied with issues of genealogy, just rule, and political consent. Dynastic foundation narratives compensate for the uncertainties of succession by evoking the longue durée of national histories—of Trojan diaspora narratives, of Roman rule, of apostolic foundation—and situating them within universalizing historical modes. -

De les fonts a la tradició, edited by Anna Maria Babbi and Vicent Josep Escartí, Amsterdam, John Benjamins, 2015, 173 pp. Silvia Millán (Universitat de València) The articles in this volume, edited by Anna Maria Babbi and Vicent Josep Escartí (Uni- versità degli Studi di Verona and Universitat de València – Institut Interuniversitari de Filologia Valenciana, respectively), highlight the fact that the chivalric novel Tirant lo Blanc –written in Valencia by Joanot Martorell in the 15th century and translated into Italian in the 16th century– keeps being relevant in both the Italian and the Iberian Peninsulas, so closely related in past and present. The knight Joanot Martorell wrote a classic of universal literature despite the fact that he belonged to a minority culture. Nowadays, after having been translated into numerous langua- ges, it is studied in many European and American universities and provokes great interest among researchers, as proven by the contributions included in this book. Cecilia Cantalupi, in “A Petrarchan source of Tirant lo Blanc. The letterFamiliare XII 2 and its Catalan tradition” (pp. 1–16), explains how chapter cxliii of the Catalan novel relates to Ab- dallah Salomon’s didactic speech to the protagonist, Tirant. It is a faithful adaptation of the Latin letter Fam. xii 2 written by Petrarch in 1352 and sent by him from Avignon to Niccolò Acciaiuoli. The letter was first translated into Catalan at the beginning of the 15th century. -

SCOTTISH BLACK MONEY IN THE LOW COUNTRIES c.1484–1506 PETER SPUFFORD THERE seem to me to be two main problems arising from the previous article by Nicholas Holmes and Hendrik van Caelenberghe.1 How far did the areas to which Scots black money penetrate relate to Scots trade with the Low Countries? Why were the Crux Pellit pieces used so widely that it was worth imitating them? I would therefore like to expand this marvellous set of new findings by looking at the context, both geographically and in terms of what denominations the Scottish 3d. and ½d. pieces might have been used for in the Low Countries. I am controversially following up the text cited by Joan Murray by not calling these pieces pennies and farthings, but instead calling the Crux Pellit coins ‘3d. pieces’, and the smaller pieces ‘halfpennies’: ‘for thir was blak cunyhe in the realme strikkin and ordinyt be king James the thred, half pennys and three penny pennys innumerabill of coppir’ in a short anonymous chronicle ending in autumn 1482, and therefore contemporary.2 Some of the smaller pieces were probably ‘farthings’ and ‘halfpennies’ at different times. The latest ones seem to have been regarded as ‘halfpennies’ in 1482. As will be apparent from the second section of this paper, it helps to think of these pieces in Joan Murray’s terms. How far did the circulation of Scottish Black Money correlate with Scottish trade? I would like to present the work of Nicholas Holmes and Hendrik van Caelenberghe geo- graphically in the context of a map of the principalities of the Netherlands in the late fifteenth century. -

Mantegna mixed ground minerals with animal glue, the kind used to size or seal a canvas, and applied the colors to a piece of fine linen prepared with only a very light coat of gesso. Distemper remains water soluble after drying, which allows the painter greater flexibility in blending new paint into existing paint than is afforded by the egg tempera technique. In lesser hands, such opportunities can produce muddy results, but Mantegna used it to produce passages of extraordinarily fine modeling, for example in the flesh of the Virgin’s face and in the turbans of wound cloth worn by her and two of the Magi. Another advantage of the technique is that it produces luminous colors with a matte finish, making forms legible and brilliant, without glare, even in low light. This work’s surface was left exposed, dirtying it, and in an effort to heighten the colors early restorers applied varnish—a bad idea, since unlike oil and egg tempera distem- per absorbs varnish, leaving the paint stained and darkened.1 Try to imagine it in its original brilliant colors, subtly modeled throughout and enamel smooth, inviting us to 1 Andrea Mantegna approach close, like the Magi. -

Special Collections and University Archives : University Libraries Dominikanerinnenkloster St. Gertrud (Cologne, Germany) Book of Hours 1481-1488 1 vol (0.2 linear foot) Call no.: MS 1057 Collection overview The Dominikanerinnenkloster St. Gertud (Dominican Convent of Saint Gertrude) operated in Cologne, Germany, for nearly five and half centuries. An important center in connection with German mysticism in the 13th and 14th centuries, the Kloster survived the Reformation, however persistently poor finances led to its decline in the 18th century. After it was abolished during a wave of secularization on October 14, 1802. This diminutive book of hours was prepared by Dominican nuns at the Kloster St. Gertrud during the 1480s. Like some other German books of hours it lacks the calendar, Gospel lessons, and the two prayers to the Virgin, Obsecro te and O intemerata, however it includes additional liturgical texts, such as Offices for major feasts, as well as music for the funeral service. This copy may have been made for or by the prioress Magdalena Frankengruenerin (1481-1488), and remained in the convent until the eighteenth century. Led by the recluse Helwigis, the community was founded in 1257 and was affiliated with the Dominican order beginning in 1286/1287, becoming known for housing relics of the 7th century Gertud of Nivelles, a saint who was associated with the Benedictine Abbeys of Nivelles and Karlburg.
