RUSSELL has been approved for the School of Art + Design and the College of Fine Arts by Marilyn Bradshaw Professor of Art History Margaret Kennedy-Dygas Dean, College of Fine Arts 3 Abstract RUSSELL, SANDRA E., M.A., May 2015, Art History Donatello’s Terracotta Louvre Madonna: A Consideration of Structure and Meaning Director of Thesis: Marilyn Bradshaw A large relief at the Musée du Louvre, Paris (R.F. 353), is one of several examples of the Madonna and Child in terracotta now widely accepted as by Donatello (c. 1386-1466). A medium commonly used in antiquity, terracotta fell out of favor until the Quattrocento, when central Italian artists became reacquainted with it. Terracotta was cheap and versatile, and sculptors discovered that it was useful for a range of purposes, including modeling larger works, making life casts, and molding. Reliefs of the half- length image of the Madonna and Child became a particularly popular theme in terracotta, suitable for domestic use or installation in small chapels. Donatello’s Louvre Madonna presents this theme in a variation unusual in both its form and its approach. In order to better understand the structure and the meaning of this work, I undertook to make some clay works similar to or suggestive of it. -
Saint Sebastian
SAINT SEBASTIAN In his semi-autobiographical novel Confessions of a Mask, the Japanese writer Yukio Mishima described his sexual awakening as a young boy when he came upon a reproduction of the martyrdom of Saint Sebastian, a painting by the late Renaissance artist Guido Reni. The event is transferred to the fictional narrator, but recalled the actual event that had proved so formative for Mishima. A remarkably handsome youth was bound naked to the trunk of a tree. His crossed hands were raised high, and the thongs binding his wrists were tied to the tree. No other bonds were visible, and the only covering for the youth's nakedness was a coarse white cloth knotted loosely about his loins... Were it not for the arrows with their shafts deeply sunk into his left armpit and right side, he would seem more a Roman athlete resting from fatigue... The arrows have eaten into the tense, fragrant, youthful flesh, and are about to consume his body from within with flames of supreme agony and ecstasy.' The boy's hands embarked on a motion of which he had no experience; he played with his 'toy': "Suddenly it burst forth, bringing with it a blinding intoxication... Some time passed, and then, with miserable feelings I looked around the desk I was facing... There were cloud-splashes about... Some objects were dripping lazily, leadenly, and others gleamed dully, like the eyes of a dead fish. Fortunately, a reflex motion of my hand to protect the picture had saved the book from being soiled. The martyrdom of Saint Sebastian would prove to be a pivotal theme in Mishima’s life and art to which he would return time and time again. -

The contribution and the endowment made by female pioneers to Mildura, is rarely recorded or acknowledged in historical documents and newspapers locally. Through reading about pioneer women in Australia, novels written between the 1880’s and 1920 and the role of women in history and prehistory, I researched why women, not just the pioneers, have become almost invisible in written records. The laws of the land and the customs of the Christian Church perpetuated the myth that women were the weaker sex and doomed them to life in the background supporting the hero, the masculine1. Male dominated perspective of feminine crafts such as embroidery and the fibre arts contributed to their exclusion from the mainstream of art and their rejection by art historians.2 With the rise of feminism in the 1890’s and more radically and profoundly in the 1970’s, the acceptance of the value of both women and women’s work, became possible.3 Art made a century ago by males and females confirmed the evidence of biased historical documentation in books and newspapers. However contemporary artists now use a variety of media without specific boundaries to express their concepts, emotions, criticisms on life. -
Mantegna's Lamentation Over the Dead Christ
DESCRIVEDENDO THE MASTERPAINTINGS OF BRERA The Lamentation over the Dead Christ by Andrea Mantegna Pinacoteca di Brera, Room 6 Formal Description Christ Dead in the Tomb with Three Mourners is the official title of this picture painted by Andrea ManteGna, probably around 1483. It is a work in tempera on canvas painted in a realistic manner and is quite complex to describe. The painting is rectangular in shape, its horizontal side slightly longer than its vertical side. It is 81 centimetres wide and 68 centimetres high. The scene depicted takes place in the tomb, where Jesus Christ's lifeless body has been laid on a slab of marble to be cleaned and oiled with perfumed ointment before burial. Besides Jesus, on one side of the canvas, we see the Grieving faces of a man and two women. The physical presence of Jesus's body dominates the painting, filling most of the available space. Jesus is shown as thouGh we were observinG him from a sliGhtly hiGher viewpoint, not by his side but facinG him from the feet up. His body is thus painted entirely alonG the canvas's vertical axis and so we see the soles of his feet in the foreGround close to the lower edGe, while if we lift our Gaze we move up his body as far as his head in the distance, close to the upper edGe. It is as thouGh Jesus's whole body were compressed between the upper and lower edGes of the canvas: the painter depicts his anatomy realistically, but in a distorted manner in which he has sliGhtly changed the dimensions of the body's individual parts so as to make the perspective he adopts believable. -

Scrovegni Chapel 1 Scrovegni Chapel The Scrovegni Chapel, or Cappella degli Scrovegni, also known as the Arena Chapel, is a church in Padua, Veneto, Italy. It contains a fresco cycle by Giotto, completed about 1305, that is one of the most important masterpieces of Western art. The church was dedicated to Santa Maria della Carità at the Feast of the Annunciation, 1305. Giotto's fresco cycle focuses on the life of the Virgin Mary and celebrates her role in human salvation. The chapel is also known as the Arena Chapel because it was built on land purchased by Enrico Scrovegni that abutted the site of a Roman arena. This space is where an open-air procession and sacred representation of the Annunciation to the Virgin had been played out for a generation before the chapel was built. A motet by Marchetto da Padova appears to have been composed for the dedication on March 25, 1305.[1] The chapel was commissioned by Enrico Scrovegni, whose family fortune was made through the practice of usury, which at this time meant charging interest when loaning money, a sin so grave that it resulted in exclusion from the Christian sacraments.[2] Built on family estate, it is often suggested that Enrico built the chapel in penitence for his father's sins and for Capella degli Scrovegni absolution for his own. Enrico's father Reginaldo degli Scrovegni is the usurer encountered by Dante in the Seventh Circle of Hell. A recent study suggests that Enrico himself was involved in usurious practices and that the chapel was intended as restitution for his own sins.[3] Enrico's tomb is in the apse, and he is also portrayed in the Last Judgment presenting a model of the chapel to the Virgin. -

THE THYROID IN ART Luigi Massimino SENA Clinical Pathology Faculty of Medicine University of Turin (Italy) 1 TAKE ART AND PUT IT IN SCIENCE Art and science are different aspects of human creativity. Over the centuries, artists have made use of the expressive power of images to awaken both emotions and empathy, which are often universal. 2 The thyroid gland (tireos, oblong "shield" , but which in reality meant big stone used as a door or for shutting the wooden door: cover, defend with the shield) is located in a part of the human body, i.e., in the neck, making it clearly visible in the throat when enlarged (goiter from Latin guttur). The prevalence of goiter was already known in ancient times, but the writings that described it were almost always devoid of explanatory drawings. The representation of the goiter is illustrated in the numerous depictions of goitrous men, women and children in coins, sculptures, paintings, simple craft objects and even in forms of folklore that involved persons not engaged in the medical art. The depictions were the works of artists living in endemic areas, or of travelers who illustrated the reality they encountered. The size of the goiter has always provoked amazement or fear, feelings that are associated with the mystery surrounding its origin and function. Over the centuries, it has stimulated the imagination of people, while at the same time it has paved the way to understanding the historical relationship between disease and society (pathocoenosis). 3 PATHOCOENOSIS In 1969, Mirko Drazen Grmek (1924-2000) created the neologism pathocenose or pathocoenosis , that is a “community of diseases”: “the collection of pathological states present in a given population in a certain time and space”. -

Matsko [email protected] Abstract Sgraffito is a technique for decoration where a surface is scratched away to reveal another underneath. This ancient technique can be extended by applying multiple layers of paint on fiberboard and using a variety of tools to scratch through the layers, resulting in richly textured pieces. Aspects of the sgraffito technique may be modeled digitally. In particular, images may be digitally processed using a small color palette to simulate the small palette used when applying the sgraffito technique using pigments. Post-processing involves smoothing out the digital images, since isolated pixels in a digital image are details too fine to be obtained using handheld tools. NOTE: The first three sections concerning painting were written by the first author (SMC), and the fourth and fifth sections concerning programming were written by the second author (VJM). History of Sgraffito Sgraffito developed from one of the most basic forms of mark-making in human culture: scratching a line. The word sgraffito comes from graffiare: to scratch. As a result, this technique developed in some form in various cultures around the world. It is an easy way to deface property; you can see the names of Romans scratched into ruins in Ancient Egypt. Our modern word graffiti comes from the plural of sgraffito. Sgraffito has been in constant use in ceramics since Ancient Greece. It was perfected as a plastering technique in Renaissance Italy before falling out of fashion. It was revived in the mid-19th Century in Germany and became very popular during the Art Nouveau movement, especially in Barcelona by architects such as Granell (see Figure 1). -

© COPYRIGHT by Olivia Rettstatt 2019 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED BRONCIA KOLLER-PINELL’S MARIETTA, 1907: FACING TRUTH IN THE VIENNA SECESSION BY Olivia Rettstatt ABSTRACT Broncia Koller-Pinell’s Marietta, 1907, an ambitious painting of a female nude, is an outlier within the artist’s oeuvre in terms of both style and genre. This thesis interrogates the painting’s relationship to the canon of Viennese modernism: the work provides an opening-point to consider Koller-Pinell’s relationship to the “Klimt Group,” a faction of artists who in 1905 seceded from the original Secession group, founded in 1897. I argue that Marietta confronts and reinterprets Gustav Klimt’s Nuda Veritas (Naked Truth), 1899, a major icon of the Secession and referent to the nude as a symbol of truth. By questioning the gendering of art and the artist in the Secession, Koller-Pinell pointed directly to the conditions that barred women from full participation in the movement. Further, I discuss the artist’s adaptation of Neo-Byzantine style and Christian iconography in the painting, relating these aspects to religious tensions within Viennese society and to Koller-Pinell’s own identity as a Jewish woman. Lastly, by re- introducing Marietta back into the context of the 1908 Kunstschau alongside Koller-Pinell’s other works, I consider the role gender played in shaping the reception of women’s art. The organizers’ pointed refusal to include Marietta in the exhibition alongside more conventionally “feminine” works by Koller-Pinell illustrates the contradictions within the Secession’s stated aim to break down the borders between art and craft.
